GAME SUMMARY Spoiler Top Performers Christiaan Meijer (AU): Goal, 2 assists Adrianus van Drummond (AU): 2 goals Linus Boer (DUS): 2 goals Amsterdam Runs Away in 3rd for Win How do they do it? Amsterdam started painfully slow again against archrivals Dusseldorf, but they managed once again to pull out a win. For the Germans, it was a rough loss as their fabulous run of form came to a screeching halt against the Dutch side. Dusseldorf pulled into an early two goal lead, racing ahead by the 9th minute to a 2-0 lead with goals from Derek Gerhard and a stunner from Linus Boer. Amsterdam looked slow out of the gate once again, never seeming to get a touch on the ball for most of the first. But the counter-attack was on in the first, and Amsterdam got their only goal on a breakaway when Martino Inzaghi had his shot saved, only for Adrianus van Drummond to collect and finish. Amsterdam was lucky to escape the first segment down only 1, but there was still plenty of work to be done to make up the deficit. The second period was a defensive struggle, with both teams seemingly incapable of creating chances. The only score came in the 31st minute, when Christiaan Meijer converted on a man-advantage to level the score. While Amsterdam showed signs of dominance in the second period, they really took over in the third. AvD and Meijer both scored in the first 8 minutes of the frame, and Amsterdam was up 4-2. Linus Boer scored another nice goal in the 45th minute to give Dusseldorf a chance, but Bram Rijnders finished almost immediately after to seal the win. GAME SUMMARY Spoiler Top Performers Andris Tevarde (HEL); 2 goals, Assist Jarius Soves (TOR): 2 goals, Assist Mikhail Robinson (HEL): Goal, Assist Tevarde’s Stunning Performance gives Voyageurs Revenge People have been saying all year that someday, Andris Tevarde will be the world’s best player. That day may be now. Tevarde has impressed all Cup long with impressive defense and stunning finishing power, but they all pale in comparison to the performance against the Lamplighters. The Latvian was creating matchup problems from the onset, attacking the goal, then kicking the pass to Kasper Pulkkinen for the opening goal. Jarius Soves showed he is the world’s best center, and put upstart Romanian Mikhail Robinson in his place with an easy goal past him to tie. Toronto took the lead in the 14th minute, when Darius Moses combined expertly with fellow post Cameron Lawrence that put the Lamplighters in front. Helsinki pulled back level in the 17th minute, and the 2-2 tie held to the first intermission. Toronto’s experience paid dividends in the second period, as their experience helped them to pull ahead courtesy of goals from Darius Moses and Jarius Soves. Toronto’s two-goal advantage seemed set to be taken into the third, but Mikhail Robinson snuck in a goal in the 39th minute to give the Voyageurs a chance. Xander Kempe got himself free from Hakeem Tate in the 42nd minute to tie the game, and the Voyageurs were poised to pop in a go-ahead soon after. But Logan Duremayer was not prepared to let Helsinki run away with the match, and he nailed an absolute stunner from the neutral zone to put Toronto into the lead. But Andris Tevarde put in another stunner to equalize, carrying the ball across the field, with Logan Duremayer riding him the whole way. Then, suddenly, the Latvian stopped on a dime, turned, and fired a rocket into the net. The undisputed goal of the tournament sent the game to extra time. Both sides had quality chances, but it was Helsinki who got the winner from Xander Kempe, who slipped behind the Lamplighters’ defense and calmly placed it into the net. Toronto Lamplighters vs. TC Dusseldorf Both sides suffered crushing defeats in the last round, but there is still plenty to play for in the consolation match. The sides are very even, but it will be up to the stars like Jarius Soves and Kaleb Schreiber to play their best game and to give their team an edge. Toronto has the best post tandem Dusseldorf has seen throughout the Cup, and those two should be enough to bottle up Matias Niskanen and lead Toronto to victory. Amsterdam United vs. Helsinki Voyageurs It all comes down to this. A team that was on the verge of glory for years against a team beginning a potential dynasty. Stopping Adrianus van Drummond will be the Voyageurs’ top priority, while Amsterdam will have to invent some way to contain Andris Tevarde. GAME SUMMARY Spoiler Top Performers Jarius Soves (TOR): Goal, 2 assist Derek Gerhard (DUS): Goal, Assist Darius Moses (TOR): Goal, Assist Toronto Edges Dusseldorf for Third Both these teams suffered excruciating losses in the semifinals, and there was plenty of motivation for both sides to go out with a win. The Lamplighters took just 90 seconds to get on the board, finding Logan Duremayer, who raced through the Dusseldorf defense and scored. Dusseldorf established physical dominance early on, and they were rewarded when Kaleb Schreiber found a gap in the Toronto defense and pounded it in. Both sides had plenty of chances in a very open first period, and both teams managed to convert once. But this openness was gone by the second frame, with the two sides sitting back in defense and desperately trying to limit opportunities. Derek Gerhard was constantly threatening throughout the period, and he finally got himself on the board in the 35th minute, outmuscling Logan Duremayer for a clear shot on goal. Jarius Soves nearly equalized in the 37th minute, sliding past Linus Boer and firing a rocket that careened off the crossbar, where Darius Moses collected a rebound, but was denied on a wonder save from Thomas Grosser. Moses would get the German keeper back in the third period, slotting home a cheeky no-look shot into the top corner to make it 3-3. Dusseldorf controlled play for much of the remaining time, but Toronto got the game winner from Jarius Soves to give the Canadian side a third place trophy. GAME SUMMARY Spoiler Top Performers Martino Inzaghi (AU): 2 goals, GWG Mikhail Robinson (HEL): Goal, Assist Christiaan Meijer (AU): Goal, Assist Inzaghi Pulls United to Crown A match that was billed as a high-scoring thriller turned out to be a defensive struggle with 15 minutes of overtime. But fans won’t complain too much, as this final was one of the best of all time. Amsterdam was first on the board, with a Martino Inzaghi goal in the third minute lifting United to the lead. Helsinki came right back with a goal from Dutchman Xander Kempe in the 9th minute, and Kasper Pulkkinen put the Voyageurs in front in the 17th. With Adrianus van Drummond and Andris Tevarde basically cancelling each other out in the first 20 minutes, both teams had to find other scoring avenues. In the second period, it was Christiaan Meijer who equalized, showing his pace by blowing past the Helsinki defense and scoring. Mikhail Robinson got one back for the Voyageurs late in the second, overpowering Meijer to score. The third period was filled to the brim with intense action and chances, with Adrianus van Drummond striking in the 44th minute to tie the match at 3. AvD collected his own rebound and overpowered Andris Tevarde to score an easy goal. Tevarde answered in the 52nd minute with a goal of his own, blazing through the United defense on the counter-attack and beating Zdenik Hajovsky to put Helsinki in the lead. Amsterdam began immediately knocking on the door after falling behind. Martino Inzaghi had a one-on-one with Helsinki keeper Erik Kumala, but he never got the shot off. Andris Tevarde run the Italian winger down from behind and stripped the ball. Amsterdam got the equalizing goal eventually, when Bram Rijnders finished a pass from van Drummond to make it 4-4 in the 57th minute. The final three minutes featured plenty of chances for both teams to get the winner, with Mikhail Robinson’s fireball off the crossbar coming the closest. But no one could find the net, so we headed for an extra period. Both teams had plenty of chances, but the two keepers continued their outstanding games by keeping the game level. After a scoreless first overtime, the second OT featured more great chances. Martino Inzaghi won the Cup on a long distance bullet to the top corner, breaking Finnish hearts with the goal, and giving Amsterdam that elusive Club Cup title.
