NFL Changes - 2016

Interesting line here re: that Lions article.

Quote

"We do have the throwback uniforms under discussion," Wood said. "One of the interesting things about the league is uniforms are very tightly policed and so to make any change, going back to the throwback or even changing the throwbacks to a different version than the one we have used in the past, almost gives a full season notice to the NFL to do that. So we’re in discussions right now about maybe bringing something back in the 2017 season. It would not be in the 2016 season."

To me, it sounds like the throwbacks might be used for the Color Rush alternates, but perhaps with blue pants. Notice how he says "changing the throwbacks."

It said a couple paragraphs earlier that the color rush jerseys will not be a throwback. My guess is an all blue or all black version of their current look.

Whoops. That's what I get for skimming the article. Anyways, color me disappointed. The throwbacks are great.

Lions president says the team will consider changes (including color scheme!?) for 2017: http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2016/02/18/detroit-lions-uniforms/80552740/

He said they want "... look at our entire uniform color scheme...".   As a lifelong, (suffering) Lions fan, I'd like that color scheme to eliminate the black, go to a traditional number font and get the blue back to the shade it used to be.  The current "Honolulu" blue has never looked right to me.  Make some version of the throwback with the current uniform, add blue face masks and it'd make me happy.  Or bring back the Billy Sims-era uniforms.

Seeing the new Sounder kit (which I like), made me think that simply adding green socks to this "hated" Seahawk set may have made it better. Maybe Nike could revisit the green jersey and incorporate into the current look?

I loved the action green jersey, I just wish they would have matched the blues. Dark pants, shoulder caps with the Seahawks blue helmet looked odd. Needed the latter throughout.

It was an odd choice to introduce a navy set of pants just for that green jersey. There was no need for it and the helmet and pants not matching made it look even worse.

They later went on to wear those navy pants with their regular slate blue jerseys, making them the most unnecessary set of alternate pants in NFL history, and that was sort of the death rattle for that set.

Living in Seattle and seeing fans wearing those jerseys next to people in the new ones made it really evident how poorly they aged.

If the Seahawks had worn the green jerseys with the normal pants and had slate blue sleeves instead of navy, the look might have worked. I think the slate blue and lime green look ugly together (with lime any more than an accent), but at least in using the blue more prominently instead of replacing it with navy, it would make it more tolerable and have it look intentional, rather than "they wouldn't let us wear navy helmets with this set."

I could give or take the black trim but the one (and really only) thing the Lions definitely need to do is change their number font. I think it's awful.

The font's grown on me. It's unique but not garish, and has a "cat" feel to it.  Standard block was so boring.

The shoulder striping is by far the biggest issue with the current jerseys

I've always thought that the Lions should basically be a blue version of the Raiders.

Slap on a blue mask, the logo, and MAYBE a single blue stripe on the helmet, and they're set.

(And I say this right after calling the Broncos old set boring and nondescript. Go figure.)

I fully agree...with your opinion on the Lions. I can't get behind your Broncos one. :)

That would be really nice...

- Single blue stripe on the helmet and pants

- Old lion logo (cleaner, no inner details and black outline cluttering it up)

But we all know the Lions will end up black and garish as :censored:... I never bought any previous era jerseys wearing my Barry Sanders throwback but the new ones have grown on me and I now own a blue Calvin Johnson. Count me out if they end up looking like a trendy high school team wearing monochrome and :censored:, I'll just hit the clearance rack...

Yeah they really should tweak the extra detail in their current logo. They could even get away with ditching the keyline (black AND white) completely and make the blue lion similar in application to the Texas longhorns logo. Give that extra keyline to Carolina.

EDIT: I'm on a :censored:ty MacBook Air with no photo editing software, so forgive the awfulness of this, but this is what I mean. The logo probably shouldn't be quite that big (although, it does give a bit of a Michigan Panthers vibe, which is an interesting nod), but that would be a perfect look for the lions IMO.

I've been saying since Day One that the Titans should have used the "'T" on their helmets instead of the ugly asymmetrical flaming ball...thing...

I love this logo as a secondary, but I strongly believe this logo is too stoic and motionless to work as a primary. I'd prefer those slapdash "the logo's only flames" helmets... or something like my sig, I'm not picky :peace:

I think the 80's - early 90's Eagles looked great with silver pants, white jersey and kelly green helmet.

I loved that look ... One of the all-time best uniforms in my opinion; unique helmet logo, uncommon color scheme, and the away uniform looks just as good as the home set.

Eagles gray pants looked great with the green jersey, but not as much with the white.  I've always felt that white jerseys should be paired with pants that are either also white or that match the color of the helmet.  Regardless, that color scheme really needs to come back asap.

The white set would look better with darker silver pants. Those silver pants were a little too close to the jersey color.

I've been noticing some things happening with [what's now called] Nissan Stadium lately, chiefly the increasing adornment of bright red (which, for what it's worth, is Nissan's corporate color so I'm not too surprised by that). They've painted up much of the formerly bare concrete in the color (which definitely does make the structure appear more attractive now), added additional fascia, changed some signage, and currently workers are removing the old red seats in the upper bowl and installing navy ones, leaving an alternating navy/red/navy pattern from the top level to the middle level to the field level. They're also currently painting the ends of the upper decks at either end in navy, as well. I've also noticed much of the signage using more red and navy. Noticeably absent--not that it was ever all that present to begin with but now its much more glaring--is the luv-ya/columbia blue.  Now all this may all merely be nothing, or all this may be pointing to signs of some kind of a brand identity update. (If that's the case, when you're currently the least relevant franchise in the league, you can probably afford to hide things in plain sight like this.)

Just my own thoughts on this: it always seemed strange to me that the Titans have a color so uniquely idenitifiable (in the NFL that is)--the columbia--and yet have it be so absent from the stadium fascia and signage. (The team does still make use of it on their website, however.) And now having lived here in Nashville for over a year which has given me chances to study the Titans' branding and identity up close (and the Predators' too, for that matter), I'm still not exactly sure what to make of the [usage of the] columbia--or the viability of the existing identity overall. On the one hand, the identity has unique elements to it that, to me at least, seem to have aged well (the shoulder yoke--although it's decreasing width recently bugs the mess out of me, the number font, and the aforementioned columbia)...on the other hand, ever since introducing the luv-ya blue alternate jerseys all those many years ago, none of their elements has ever really seemed to mesh together too well. And then there's the columbia (which by the way is much more muted in person than it looks from afar)...yes it's a relic to times past in Houston, but now after 17 seasons in Nashville (this is their 18th coming up as the Titans), part of me is convinced they could probably just do away with it altogether and go another direction. Now as to what that direction would be, whether falling in line with their across-the-river (and much better branded and lately more successful) brethren, the Predators, and making a go of incorporating athletic gold in place of the columbia (I did a concept showing that some time ago), or figuring out a unique usage of red and blue (which would bring their overall look more in line with the Tennessee state flag--which the more and more I see the stadium and signage changes, the more and more I wonder if they might indeed be heading in that direction, but that's just me).

Anyway, just something I figured I'd pass along...it may all mean nothing, or it may be nothing to come...but worth keeping an eye on nonetheless. (For those who care, anyway).

For what it's worth, here's some photos I took showing the stadium updates during the offseason.
