The Official CCSLC Uniform Number Thread

Recommended Posts

So, after a positive response to whether I should make this thread, I've decided to go ahead and make a thread devoted to uniform numbers.  This is the all-encompassing uniform number thread - although a decent amount of my posts will focus on free agents getting new numbers when they go to new teams - so you can post anything you want about uni numbers.

I'll get it started with one of the more high-profile number changes of the MLB offseason:

b0d674b2-a911-11e5-9cc5-ee535e19c2de-102

I actually keep track of new numbers for hockey to get an early eye on what the player would look like in their new uniform so I'll be using this thread quite a bit

Sweet man, looking forward to it. Right now this thread is pretty quiet because the MLB offseason is almost done. Once we get to NFL free agency and some NHL trades this thread will heat up.

Finally, a high profile move that involved a number change.

As a kid I was always fascinated with the football number system.  During the summer when I played football, before we got our game jerseys, I would pick a number that would best suit every player on the team. It was weird how my mind worked, but I knew when a guy just looked like a 58

That sounds familiar...

The NFL number system has changed in recent years allowing receivers to get numbers in the teens like Larry Fitzgerald #11.

Also it was not always in effect and not in the AFL take a look at the John Hadl #22 no QB can wear that now.

Then you had kickers that played other positions Jim O'Brien won Super Bowl V with #80, Lou Grozza wore #60.

I believe baseball had a system of assigning numbers in the past.... Something along the lines of

0-14 Infielders and Catchers

15-29 Outfielders

30-39 Starting Pitchers

40-59 Relievers

60+ Call Ups/ Not Expected to make the roster

Off the top of my head, correct me if im wrong.

Gallardo to wear 49 with the O's, Dylan Bundy (the previous wearer) to take 37. The previous owner of 37, the pitching coach Dave Wallace, will take 16.

 I don't think. Examples:

Mark Melancon Relief Pitcher, 35

Francisco Cervelli Catcher: 29

Probably more but these are ones I no off the top of my head.

Note the "had". Nowadays numbers are rarely assigned and often chosen
