Pro Bowl, Skills Challenge, and NFL Hawaii

What if the NFL made a game or two take place in Hawaii every year? Basically the same idea as "NFL Europe" while giving Europe and Hawaii games. Give Hawaii a chance to watch a competitive game instead of the monstrosity that is our current Pro Bowl. I think you could still leave the Pro Bowl at Hawaii or you could move it to different places around the US (not necessarily the same site as the Super Bowl.

I don't have the solution to fix the game itself. I do however believe that they should bring back the skills challenge. I remember growing up watching the challenge and then going out to the yard and setting up trash cans or tires and trying to hit them. It's something that isn't stressful or serious in nature but gives the players something to compete at with cash prizes and maybe even money for charities.

1.  There's no reason to put real games in Hawaii.  It's not and never will be a candidate for expansion (not that Europe really is, but they did have the WLAF, NFLE, and could potentially have some kind of operation there.)

2.  American football just doesn't lend itself to an all star game.  Look at the other sports -

Baseball: one on one, great pitcher vs great hitter

Basketball: alley-oops, stylistic dunks, basically a skills display under the guise of a game

Hockey: kinda sorta like basketball

Football would be better if they eliminated the lines, because for one thing, OL isn't the kind of thing that you can just throw people together and expect them to play well, and for another thing, why on earth would they really want to bang heads with DL after just banging heads for a full season?  It's stupid and dangerous.

You may get the occasional great receiver vs great cornerback, but for the most part it's not really the same kind of display of skill that the other sports have.

A skills competition would be better.  Or, better yet - eliminate it all together.  Too many safety risks for too few viewers.

Twice they've played the Pro Bowl somewhere other than Honolulu in the recent past (Miami and Glendale AZ). It wasn't well-received by the players as those that do accept the invite enjoy the Hawaii vacation out of it (and their family/friends that go, too).

As for all-star games, they need to do what the NHL has done, to an extent. A skill competition (non-contact) needs to happen.  For the game itself, make it 7-on-7, give the linemen an invite, but let them have turns snapping the ball or running with it. Initial contact ends the play (as they did the end of the game Sunday anyways). Up the requirements, 20-yards for a 1st down. No punting. Either kick a field goal (which is live) or go for it. Make it a free-for-all. It hasn't been a 'real game' for years. Why keep acting like it is. Have some fun with the rules.

I'd like to say that I'm probably the CCSLC's resident Pro Bowl "Expert", in a sense.

I've been to the Pro Bowl Six times (Hawaii in 01, 02, 07, 08, 09, Glendale in 2015) and it's gotten progressively worse over the years.

The first two times I went it was probably the most fun sporting event I've ever attended. The games themselves weren't anything to write home about, but everything leading up to it was fantastic. Waikiki Beach was decked to the brim in Pro Bowl colors/logos/banners and there were a TON of people from everywhere. The whole media shebang took place at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and the players and cheerleaders and anyone who was anyone stayed there the week of the game. All the "games" the players and celebrities played in during the week all happened on the beach in front of the resort, EVERYONE participated (except for Brett Favre), and it was an absolute circus at times. It actually got sorta uneasy there a few times because certain aspects were still relatively unregulated back then. But that was what was so much fun about it. You could even get Pro bowl gear for super cheap. There was a metric ton of licensed merchandise that was relatively reasonable, and it all went on sale the day after the game for like 75% off. And you could get the "unlicensed" gear for like $5 a pop on the beaches. It was so great. I still don't think I'm ever going to enjoy a sporting event as much as I did those two Pro Bowls.

07, 08, and 09 were still pretty fun, but EVERYTHING was so much harder to access as a fan and it was all so much more expensive. There weren't nearly as many side events leading up to the games and they were mostly kind of boring with relatively few NFL players actually in attendance. The selection of Pro Bowl gear you could purchase was much much less and it was all phenomenally expensive. For example, replica Pro Bowl jerseys were $50-$75 more expensive in 08 than they were in 07 for some random reason while other replica NFL jerseys on the island stayed the same price. It was basically the same as 01 and 02, but you could totally feel that whoever was in charge of the whole thing simply didn't have the same kind of enthusiasm or dedication to the game that the people before them did. It was actually a bit sad, and I really didn't think it could get any worse.

I went to the game last season and it was an absolute :censored:ing joke. The only reason I even knew it had moved to Arizona at all was because I could see a billboard from my bedroom window advertising the game (it sat there for three weeks before I actually noticed what it was for, too). The entire thing was completely usurped by the Super Bowl to the point where most people didn't even know the game was in Arizona and was a week before the Super Bowl. I spent the entire week trying to find Pro Bowl merchandise and found ONE basic Pro Bowl sideline hat that cost $55 among the crush of $60 Seahawks and Pats Super Bowl hats. Parking cost more than the hat, both teams wore grey jerseys and were "captained" by former NFL players rather than having conferences, and we left the seats by the second quarter and the building three minutes into the third. It was the biggest waste of time and money I've ever spent on a sporting event, and was not even a shell of what the game was in 2001.

Look, people can rip on the Pro Bowl all they want. I get it, I really do. I agree with a LOT of the sentiments about the game as well. But the Pro Bowl is such a terrible event now compared to what it was just a decade ago. For some strange reason, Goodell has always had a bit of a distain for the Pro Bowl and it's sort of been his mission to completely torpedo the entire event. Some of the absolutely asinine changes that Goodell has made to the game over the years (making it a week BEFORE the Super Bowl, no conferences, no kickoffs) has turned it from a barely watchable from home but fun as hell event to be at, to an impossible to watch at home and probably even worse event to be at. OF COURSE the Pro Bowl is failing. That's exactly what Rodger Goodell wants. He's screwed up the format so bad that he's basically set the entire thing up to fail, and when it does, he can turn around and say "LOOK!!! SEE!?!?! I TOLD YOU nobody liked the Pro Bowl!".

Sure, the Pro Bowl kinda sucks. But it was just fine only sorta sucking before Rodger Goodell had to come in and make it completely and totally suck. And it's not like the NFL as an industry is incapable of having an All Star Game. They've had the Pro Bowl for decades and up until about the time Rodger Goodell took over, it was just fine. A little unavailing, sure. But isn't (shouldn't) EVERY All Star Game essentially meaningless? Having the vacation week for the Pro Bowl be the final event to the NFL season was damn near perfect. It was casual, fun, easygoing, acessable, and a really good way to send off a long season. Why they ever :censored:ed with that is beyond me.

There is no reason to put real games in Europe either... so if they want to send games to Europe lets send the Pro Bowl over there.

It definitely seems like is all they show up for is a couple of practices and then a half-hearted game, that is getting worse. Other all-star games have a day or night prior to the game where they have skill challenges, why doesn't the NFL? Oh yeah I forgot, Goodell.

The last time they did something "cute", it ended the career of Robert Edwards.

I was just about to bring that up.

The NFL used to do contest in the off-season like the QB Challenge and the NFL's Fastest Man but I think injury factor is a concern for both now and they are gone like the old Superstars contests.

Yeah but "Beach Flag Football" using real, active  NFL players is a really stupid idea anyway. They ended up changing that to a retired guys/celeb game. And they used to do plenty of other cool stuff that wouldn't cause a star RB to blow out his knee. They used to have a bowling tournament on the beach and Kurt Warner won the thing huge in his short shorts and dad shoes more than once. It was great! They don't do any of that for the Pro Bowl any longer. Now they just fine players for not showing up to league-sponsored autograph sessions (that they don't get paid for, either) that cost like $250 for the fans to stand in line for.

Roger Goodell is a plague. Maybe they should do the Pro Bowl after the Super Bowl again, because when Tyrod Taylor is in the game something is wrong. Also do fun stuff like the a bowling tournament and a golf tournament. Right now its not working and this choosing teams is cheesy. AFC vs NFC is what it should be or do away with it.

When Sydney is interested in bidding for the game, it is not going away.  It will peak the interest of the players even more and the NFL will be OK with someone else paying the bill for it, like the $4 million subsidy the state of Hawai'i given the NFL.

And on the team finance side, the NFL and the NFLPA would have to agree on how to write new bonus language into contracts.

Why not just do a "Rising Pros" Bowl? Have players rookie-4th year compete in a game similar to how the NBA does a "Rising Stars" game/challenge/whatever it's called.

That would be even more difficult to fill.

If a guy coming off on his rookie contract and is weeks away from free agency, he isn't going to step on the field for basically a first class flight and 50K.

I sure as hell wouldn't.

Has the union brought up concussions as a reason to possibly end the game (assuming the players don't want it kept around)?  Wasn't concussions / injuries one of the reasons to not add 2 extra games?  But one extra game is OK?  If I was a lineman, I sure as hell would balk if given the opportunity.

Also, most of these guys have been on vacation for a full month, and they're expected to get excited about flying out to hawaii to practice and bang heads again?  I'm kind of surprised the players don't abort the pro bowl when the CBA comes up.

It's a bonus paycheck and a free trip to Hawaii to sometimes play half speed at best. I honsetly think that most players actually like the event. Or at least they did at one point.

The changes, such as narrower goalpost for 2015 and picking teams came about from the NFLPA, notably former president Domonique Foxworth as he kept hearing from the players that they enjoy the Pro Bowl.
