The massive overhaul done by DiPoto has to produce something. Thanks to Toronto's division title last season, the M's are now saddled with the longest playoff drought in MLB at 15 seasons. Yeah well, problem is that PANDA MODE is usually closer to what an actual bear looks like just before hibernation, and that bear often times goes into 1 for 35 slumps due to grease sweats or misses months on end due to broken ham bones. Can't forget about the Likes from the :censored:ter mid game, either. It's more a testament to the guy's character, really. Even if he does start hitting again and isn't a total disaster in the field, he's shown himself to be totally unable/unwilling to use a bit of self control. That's a really bad sign for a guy who's owed about a hundred million dollars left in guaranteed money over the next half decade or so. Dude's done nothing but great things for the team, and just because he left for another team, which happens all the time with free agents, you guys take such glee in ripping him. The last thing he did as a Giant was catch the final out of the World Series. He came out of nowhere and was a rookie phenom when the team was still terrible. He was the freakin' World Series MVP, and would have won another one if not for Bumgarner's performance. OK, he's fat. So what? I've seen the guy fly across the infield making amazing plays while fat. He's been great when he was fat, and bad when he was thinner. Who the hell cares what he looks like? Tim Lincecum's been awful for much longer than Pablo has. Why aren't we ripping him for being too skinny? Why the obsession with being fat? I mean, I expect all this from Red Sox fans, because Boston, and he hasn't done anything for their team, but SF should be better than this. He hit three home runs in a World Series game, and instead of being remembered as a hero, y'all just want to talk about his belly. Stop being weird. FiddySicks Posted February 23, 2016 Share Posted February 23, 2016 Ok, look. I watched nearly every single game that Pablo played in as a Giant. I know exactly what he contributed to the team. He was fantastic for large, MAJORLY important stretches there, and for that, he's always going to be someone I look at fondly. 2 of the 3 World Series titles the Giants won, he was a major contributing factor, and if it weren't for Bumgarner going absolutely bananas in 2014, he would've been a two-time World Series MVP. So trust me, I understand how important the guy was. But, for as important as the playoffs are, it's still a really small sample size to generate an opinion on a guy. We do it all the time, because the playoffs are important, but 15-20 game stretches in October/November kinda tend to leave out a big part of the story. Considering how many Giants games I saw while he was on the roster, I also sat through stretches where he looked like the absolute worst payer on the field (If he was even healthy enough to be on the field), and a large contributing factor to that was that he simply didn't take his conditioning seriously enough. While he was a Giant, he suffered a TON nagging injuries during the start of seasons and during the toughest stretches of the season that would sideline him for a few weeks at a time, and a LOT of that had to do with poor preventative measures on his part (IE: He spent from November-March sitting on his ass eating and would start the season slow/injured, and would be the first position player to fatigue during the dog days). It got to the point where it was detrimental to his career and the Giants success, and he consistently scoffed whenever the Giants told him he needed to at least attempt to fix that. I'm a little bit of a fat guy myself (although Pablo's still got at least 100 lbs. on me), so I understand how it can be hard to lose weight, even when you're really trying. But that wasn't Pablo's problem. The problem was that he never even tried, and it was obvious by how much of a toll it took on his body. It doesn't take a genius to know that trying to start up any type of physical routine after being stagnant for months on end leading up to it can take a real toll on a person physically. The ONLY condition the Giants ever had for giving Pablo close to nine-figures was that he be accountable for his own personal fitness. And instead of agreeing to that completely reasonable request, he bailed, trashed just about everyone on his way out, and turned into what amounted to a sunk cost for the Red Sox last season, largely due to the issues the Giants were concerned about. And just look at the current situation. The Red Sox said several times during the off season that they essentially agreed with the Giants and they too wanted him to drop some of the weight, because it was obviously a detriment to his success. And what does he do about it? Not a damn thing. And then he blatantly lies to the media about the Red Sox request in the very first interview this season. I don't know about you, but that's not exactly a dude who I trust to command 15%-25% of the team's yearly salary totals. I miss Pablo as a figure WAY more than I miss him as a baseball player. He's an absolute anomaly who shouldn't be able to do what he does, has a great persona as the Kung-Fu Panda, and that was entertaining as hell to watch. From being excited about him and hoping he would ever make a name for himself in 2009, to watching him become one of the greatest playoff performers ever was so damn fun, and something I'm always going to cherish. But everyone always knew that his success, while brilliant when on, was pretty unstable. The fact that he just flat out refused to do the minimum to try and stabilize some of the chaos (and he's been like that since he was first drafted) was always a bad sign and guys with a ton more focus and dedication have fallen apart due to injuries. It was just too big of a risk, and Giants fans had pretty much always reserved the fact that he was probably going to get highly overpaid for his past performances and would eventually be a Zito/Lincecum/Cain in terms of his contract (Which is almost always unequivocally worse to have with position players than pitchers). it just so happened that another team was dumb enough to give him his "back pay", and so far it's turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Giants. tl;dr, Thanks for the memories, Pablo. I won't pretend to be a doctor and say he got injured because of a lack of conditioning or dedication or whatever. If a fit guy gets hurt a lot, we say he's injury prone. If a big guy gets hurt, it's because he's fat and lazy. He went through slumps? All players have slumps! Was it because of his weight? How would I know? And even so, none of that justifies taking such pleasure in watching him struggle on another team, and focusing so much on what he looks like. I take pleasure watching him struggle and I'm not even a Giants fan.
