Absolutely gut wrenching news. Has there ever been a death mid season of a bigger star than Fernandez? I can't think of one. I wanna say Thurmon Munson, but Fernandez was even better I think (that was before my time, so maybe my perception of Munson is wrong). Either way, this was absolutely terrible news to wake up to.

Munson, like Fernandez was also a Rookie of the Year.  Munson was also American League MVP, a three time Gold Glove winner and as mentioned was captain of the Yankees.  In fact Munson's locker was left unoccupied from his death until Yankee Stadium was demolished and is now in a museum in the new stadium.

Fernandez as was also said was barring injury on his way to being a perennial Cy Young candidate.  I enjoyed watching him pitch, his death is tragic and seeing the news of it this morning was terrible but the comparison as to bigger star is difficult because one was eleven years into his career while the other's was really just getting started.

I went to Yankee Stadium in 2010 and saw Munson's locker in person. Before then, I hadn't really ever heard of him (I was born in the late 80s).

Thurman Munson was the captain of the New York Yankees at a time before fantasy sports and the internet made mid-market superstars popular anywhere. Before my time, too, but I have to think that was bigger.

It wasn't before my time and you're right, Munson's death was bigger. Along with the reasons you mentioned, Munson also played for the "Bronx Zoo" Yankees - a team that was in the news for one thing or another almost every day. This probably isn't the best comparison, but Munson's death was kinda like an actor from a hit TV show dying in real life. The Yankees were a soap opera and Munson was one of the stars of the show...so to speak. Does that make any sense?

Former Giant Charlie Culberson hits a walk off homer to give the Dodgers the NL West on Vin Scully's last home game. Of course. As much as I dislike the Dodgers, Vin is the greatest of all-time.

It was about as perfect an ending to Vin's last home game as one could ask for. I certainly enjoyed it.

Very tragic to die so young. Much like Oscar Tavares a few years ago.

I can't really say it's like that, at least until we see the results of the investigation ... we shouldn't forget Tavares was DRUNK DRIVING when he died.

I saw, I came, I left.

I was just referring to both of them being young.

It's obviously a different sport, and very different circumstances; but in terms of age and standing within the game, the nearest recent comparison I can think of would be the loss of Sean Taylor

Having lived through both, I think Munson was a much bigger deal.  Fernandez obviously had tremendous potential.  Munson was already a star in the sport's biggest market.

TMZ is reporting that Jose Fernandez and his friends who were on the boat were at a bar until atlas 2am and the bar had a dock that they could have left him. alcohol and driving don't mix, and make it driving a boat at night and you are just asking for disaster. yes he did die way too soon but it could have been avoided.

I wouldn't have expected anything else. Im almost half hoping they give him the Cy Young this year too. He's not that far off anyway, and this feels like one of those special circumstances that would make that acceptable.

A friend and I were just talking about this, actually. I am very glad to see that his number will be retired, I'd hoped the Marlins would sooner or later. I too think him getting a posthumous Cy Young be perfectly acceptable. More than acceptable though, I'd considered him a worthy candidate already. He had a fantastic season, and his last game was absolutely lights out. Possibly the best game of his career, even. Marlins team record for K's in a season also, if I remember correctly. I'm personally hoping he gets it.

I'm still in total shock over it all. He was such a joy to watch, had a wonderful story, and was en route to possibly becoming one of the best of his time. He really was the kind of player you couldn't help but love and root for, Marlins fan or not. As a baseball fan, I already miss him. In complete and genuine honesty, with no intention of cliche here: I don't think we'll ever see another Jose Fernandez again.

Jeff Passan tweeted that we need an award for the player who best exhibits the joy of baseball named in José Fernandez's honour and I think that's exactly what we need. The best way to honour his memory, I feel.
