A Swing And A Miss: The Most Wrong You've Ever Been Regarding Sports

1993 playoff Islanders cost me defeating the Penguins.  That's not really a qualifier here because barely anyone picked New York.

I thought the 2010 & 2014 Russian Olympic hockey teams were locks to play in the finals.  teehee

I wanted David Duval to keep rolling as a top 5 golfer.  He was one of the very few unscathed by Tiger's aura... & it was the yips that cost him.

And frankly, they probably would've been better off going with the Cosmos. A team with a recognizable and fondly-remembered identity, with a stadium deal in place.

I'm an NYCFC fan, but there's a definite perception that they're a minor league farm team for Man City amongst many New York soccer fans. That, and they're not any closer to a stadium deal now than when the team was announced.

You really think so?  That seems to me to have blown over. Even the Red Bull fans only toss that around half-heartedly. In part because the team has done so well marketing itself in the community, the overseas ownership seems so very far away.

As for the stadium, what "deal in place" are you talking about?  The Cosmos haven't been able to do any more on that score than NYCFC.  Heck, at this rate NYCFC might yet beat them to an opening, even with the Cosmos' head start on Long Island.

This isn't really MLS's fault.

The Cosmos had their chances to come to MLS and never were able to grasp the opportunities given to them. I would have 100% preferred the Cosmos over the soccer team playing playing in Yankee Stadium but I don't blame MLS for going the other way especially with the money that was offered to them.

The overseas ownership does seem very far away to those who follow the team, but I do know plenty of soccer fans in New York City that have said that they have no interest in a team owned by Man City. Anecdotal evidence, admittedly, but I've known of quite a few people who have no interest in NYCFC, either because of the stadium or the ownership. I've even felt a bit divided on that issue, as a Manchester United supporter - I'd probably be a lot more engaged with NYCFC if they weren't owned by City, of all teams. (FWIW, there's also a small handful of Mets fans who feel alienated by the Yankees' ownership stake, or by playing in Yankee Stadium - not that I think that's impacting NYCFC's support much.)

The Cosmos' stadium situation is by no means good, and they've encountered a number of bumps in the road in recent years, but at least they have a site proposed and a bid in place for that site. I wouldn't bet on them winning that bid, but I would guess that if they were an MLS team that would really be able to bring in 25,000+ fans a game, I think they'd have a much better shot at winning the bid for that site.

You can like who you like, of course, but isn't this a bit silly? You don't live in Manchester, you're presumably not making any money from Man U, and NYCFC is your local team.

I thought he was going to be such a scrubby pro coming out of Davidson. Mayyybe a decent bench 3-point specialist like his pops. On top of that, going to a nothing team like the Warriors.

Now dude's mentioned in the same sentence as MJ.

MLS wanted a stadium in the city. That's the whole point. The Cosmos are trying to settle for one in the suburbs, but that site was chosen only because they decided to join the NASL.  Had they joined MLS, Long Island wouldn't have been a consideration.

Sports fandom in general is silly when you sit down and think about it.

People have different motivations for supporting the teams they support.

At the end of the day, that exact logic is why I still support NYCFC in the MLS, despite Man City's ownership. They're my hometown team, and have done a million times better job of engaging with New York City than NYRB ever has. Despite their ownership situation, I'm still willing to support them. Even if their branding is reminiscent of City's, even if they call their fans "Cityzens" (ugh), etc.

That said, crap like the Frank Lampard situation makes the City connections quite relevant. I can be a fan of a local team that happens to be owned by a foreign club that I despise; I can't be a fan of a feeder team to said club. If they avoid any further Lampard-esque situations, I'll remain a fan. Pull crap like that again? I couldn't possibly continue to root for NYCFC under those circumstances. And I think that's a fair position for a United fan (or any fan) living in New York to take.

That's one of the predictions I got right. I subsequently predicted wrongly that they would beat Montreal in the Conference Finals though.

I thought Kevan Barlow was going to be the next great NFL running back.

So did Mike Shanahan.

I also thought Cam Newton was a stupid pick. "What are they DOING?!? The Panthers JUST drafted Jimmy Clausen LOL let him develop"

What's scary about that is that the Panthers were thinking about trading up in the second round of that 2010 draft with the Rams, getting the first pick in that round, and sending their 2011 first-rounder to St. Louis. If that happened, maybe Andrew Luck comes out a year earlier if Elway can swing a deal with St. Louis (I heard that Luck didn't want to play with the Panthers, so he went back to school).

When the Yankees hired Joe Torre in November, 1995, to replace Buck Showalter I thought it was going to be a disaster and that George Steinbrenner would chew him up and spit him out in a year or two.  We all know how that ended up...

As a Cardinal fan, I thought that as well.

Some other opinions about sports that didn't come true:

1. After SB 36, I thought the Patriots were a one-hit wonder that wouldn't make it back to the big game for a long time.

2. After getting Roy, Aldridge, and Oden, I thought that the Blazers would win at least two titles in the 2010's.

I made a bet with my friend that the Detroit Lions would win a Superbowl within a 5-year span (this past Superbowl marked the end of this period). The bet was for a single beer, so it's not a huge loss.

I've been a Lions fan almost my whole life. Heck, I'm wearing a Lions t-shirt right now.

But as much as I love them, I don't have faith that they will ever make it there in my lifetime. At least, I haven't seen any playing that would merit getting there.

Who knows, I could be swinging and missing here.

images%2B%25283%2529.jpg

Pretty much sums it up.

Btw, were you already drunk when you made that bet? I never would have made it with a sober mind :P

Cool thread idea. A few of my great predictions and spot on analysis from my radio days.

Rick Mirer will be a great NFL QB.

A great example of a star player who isn't using steroids is Barry Bonds.

Circa 1996: This Yankees team is a mirage. Forget the World Series, there's no way they will hold on and take the AL East.

Circa 1996: The Texas Rangers are easily the best team in baseball - and no one is talking about them. (Now we know why)

The Yankees hired Joe Torre? Do they not realize what a terrible manager he is?

The Indians are really going to regret trading Carlos Baerga.

The Giants are going to blow out the Ravens in the Super Bowl.

And my personal favorite - Peyton Manning has bust written all over him.

There's another thread in here somewhere: "Expert" misfires.  Like the time when Beano Cook predicted Ron Powles would win multiple Heismans.
