2016 NHL Playoffs, Rite of Spring: "You thought God was an architect"

Be careful what you wish for. How many damn times do we have to see the Wild lose to Chicago in the playoffs? The Wild keep prolonging inevitable changes with these early round teaser wins that make us think things are different.

Hot Take- MIN would be better off losing to DAL and forcing major changes than another CHI sweep and they stay the same because they keep getting to the second round and are stuck in limbo.

Absolutely.  The fan base is always satisfied with squeaking into the playoffs but after limping across the finish line with five straight losses, maybe a lackluster sweep will lead to some change.  Because this is not working.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Wild make the next leap to postseason relevancy, but this just isn't their time. But hey, 2019 is coming sooner than you think!

Please please please let this be the year we get something different in the West:

1. No CHI-MIN 2nd round series.

2. Someone else repping the West in the Cup Finals

And for those of you who want the Wild to beat Dallas so badly- be careful what you wish for. CHI/MIN 2nd round playoff series are as stale as the million or so Capitals/Rangers playoff series.

Do you REALLY want to see the Wild fall their way up into another playoff win where they don't make necessary changes and stay with their stale status quo?

I hope for something different, but I fear the inevitably predictable happens again.

The new playoff format practically guarantees we see the same tired match-ups, ad nauseum...  Third time in four years we have to sit through a Sharks/Kings series.

Well, at least we know you didn't live through the 80s.

Except that the first Sharks/Kings series was under the old format and the other one was two years ago (and I don't recall just having to "sit through"either series. They were pretty damn good. And I hate both teams.)... and we were one point away this season from it being Sharks/Ducks instead.

Stars/Wild is new. Isles/Panthers is new. This is only the 2nd ever Blues/Hawks matchup. Ducks/Perds just played once in the old system. Flyers/Caps is the first one since 2008.

Only Detroit/Tampa and Penguins/Rangers are repeats. I'd say Penguins/Rangers is the only series you could classify as tired, but even then I'd expect the script to flip from the last two times we saw it.

Eventually could it turn into the same old tired match-ups? Sure. As rams said, look at the 80s. But for now and this season, I really don't see this as a valid complaint.

Even with a divisional playoff system we're still guaranteed to see more variation than we had in the 80's just by having more teams and the crossover wildcards. The 80's had the divisional system and 16 out of 20 teams made the playoffs.

The problem is not the first round matchups. It's the lack of second round reseeding. THAT is where the predictability happens

In 2014, Anaheim would have played Minnesota instead of the Kings.

And with this new format, we don't get divisional rivalries in the conference finals anymore. Imagine if ANA-LA or CHI-STL was the West Finals?

I mean, when they changed the format in 1994, right off the bat we got the legendary Devils-Rangers East Finals.

Right... We can get divisional rivalries in the "Divisional Final" and conference rivalries in the Conference Final.

Like if it's a Ducks/Hawks WCF again, that's not a bad thing. It'll be two teams that have proved themselves to be the best in the conference again. Sadly too if it's Kings/Hawks. It's just the way it is. It happens.

If you want a more wide open field or the chance for something new, watch the Eastern Conference and go to bed early. If you want to see the best teams keep colliding, watch the West and hold on.

SELFISH REQUEST:

Does anybody know which thread housed all those NHL "golf" logos. Like when a team was eliminated from the Playoffs, somebody "golfified" their logo. Specifically I remember a St. Louis blues one with the Blue Note as the flag on a green.

Surprised nobody is giving the Flyers any chance to get out of the first round. Everyone knows about the Presidents' Trophy curse, and I seem to recall that the last time the Caps won it, they bowed out to *cough cough* Montreal *cough cough* en route to Philly making the Finals.

Philly is going to be the upset team of the year...
