They're not going to let some two-bit minor league team tell they they can't use a name. A couple of C+ law school grad students can make the London Knights tuck their tails and apologize with one or two billable hours of work and a cease and desist letter or two.

I find myself agreeing with you o.

I'm not a lawyer, but I find it surprising that a junior hockey club can lay total claim to such a generic name as "Knights".

"Las Vegas Knights" would be from a different city, country, league, with a different logo, colour scheme, uniforms.

When you think of all the different Major Junior A, Provincial Junior A, Junior B, Junior C, etc. hockey clubs there are in Canada...

It would be a wonder if you could find a team name that ISN'T taken.

Hell, this is a country that had 2 CFL teams with the same name.

There are duplicate names among the big 4 sports. (Rangers, Kings)

It almost sounds so unbelievable, that you wonder if it is, in fact, the case.

...Could just be smoke 'n mirrors to divert attention from the inevitable "Knights" result.

...And oh... did Mr. Foley mention that "Aces" WASN"T on the list?

Is there still hope?...

I've always thought that Peregrines would make a great team name. I can't think of what other bird it might be, and still be original. I do think the NHL might shoot it down for being too much like Penguins, at a glance. (A dumb reason, I know, but just the kind of dumb the league likes to embrace).

I like the name, but it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

"Bluebirds" (the state bird) is picking up steam

So intimidating. Hey, if we can have penguins, why not?

I am fine with the actual animal but the adjective is too common already in the NHL.

We already have the Blues and Blue Jackets.  Really don't need another "Blue" team.

Love the identity, don't care for the name "Aces".

Naming them the Peregrines would be like the Mercury Mets forecasting their own move. Peregrine is an adjective that means "wanderer", more or less. It would be a really great name for one of those road-only teams that pop up from time to time (though probably not ever planned to build an identity around, I suspect).

Las Vegas Battlers - A play on the Nevada state motto, "Battle Born". It is a name that could lend itself to a logo package featuring images of knights.

Las Vegas Paladins - One of the 12 peers of Charlemagne's court, the term "paladin" has come to mean a heroic champion or a paragon of chivalry.

Las Vegas Sidewinders - Foley has reportedly ruled out branding his franchise with a reptilian identity, but - if he were to reconsider - this is a solid name.

Las Vegas Vipers - Again, this is a reptilian identity that Foley may not want to consider. That said, it flows nicely due to alliteration and could lend itself to great imagery.

Las Vegas Wranglers - On the plus side, this name has history in the market. Negatives include the fact that name could be considered "minor league" and that the ECHL still holds rights to the trademark.

Las Vegas Thunderbirds - Likely a non-starter given the fact that the AHL's Springfield, MA-based team has just adopted the name. Still, it would tie-in with the region's Native American culture, as well as the history of Nellis Air Force Base and the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds.

Kind of ironic for a bird which mates for life and which returns to the same breeding nest every season.

I feel like the Nevada Bighorns or the Las Vegas Bighorns would work well as a name... The Desert Bighorn Sheep is the official State animal, and there's no professional team in the Big 4 that uses that name. (The Rams are close, but they're name doesn't have much to do with location anymore...) Their state fish is the cutthroat, which also might work.... Nevada Cutthroats, Las Vegas Cutthroats... I'm not sure if any of these are possibilities, but they workk better than Nights or Knights or Las Vegas Neon Silver Black Gold (K)Nights!!!

GOOOOO NEON SILVER BLACK GOLD (K)NIGHTS!!!!!

According to a story on rotoworld Foley wants to use the name Night somewhere in the team name. He cannot use Knight however as he got push back from Army and London. He also said they are considering a particular bird name...

First thing that came to my mind when I read "night" was the Las Vegas Night Owls as it could work on multiple fronts

The owner of the NHL’s Las Vegas expansion team revealed that he is close to a decision on the franchise’s name. Bill Foley told Sportsbook Radio on Tuesday that the early favorite has been culled from the four-name list of finalists.

“It’s not Black Knights,” Foley said. “That’s been vetted, and there were too many objections from my alma mater [West Point] and then [we got] some push-back from some other people, so we’ve put that one aside. But the name is going to have ... Knights somewhere in some fashion, some way. Or, there’s one particular animal, a bird, that we have available to us that we might use.”

Hmmm ... Night Owls, perhaps?

Whichever way he goes, a decision appears imminent.

“We have a video conference [Wednesday] with the NHL and adidas,” Foley said. “So I should have a good feeling of what the name’s going to be [then].”

Foley says he’s relying heavily on input from adidas for both the team name and the logo design, adding that’d he like everything to be finalized ahead of the two NHL exhibition games slated for T-Mobile Arena in early October.

"If things have gone wrong, I'm talking to myself, and you've got a wet towel wrapped around your head."

Nighthawks and the logo will be a stylized F-117.

Can the next owner the NHL finds not be as much of a military otaku?
