Black Knights.

LV NHL expansion bid was run by a company called Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, same name as owner Bill Foley's financial services co.

Foley graduated from West Point, also called the Black Knights.

It's gonna be Black Knights.

So you're saying White Knights has a chance? Noice.

None of that is exactly news.  But what is news is that after months of this being out there, he's talking about that name not being a done deal.  I suspect the NHL had something to say about borrowing a collegiate nickname.

Just use the Las Vegas Sin logo if called any of the snake names.  (I love Vipers BTW!)

I've never seen that logo before, but it's beautiful. Why not just use this?

It's not a good logo. In addition to being done in a minor-league / college style (thick stroke, lots of spikes/angles, shading/highlighting) the stick doesn't make any sense where it is (it really can't be held by the tail that's also supporting the cherry) but there's also highlights ok both sides of said cherry, which I'm not sure could possibly happen.

Black Knights is dumb.

Knights, however, would be a perfect name. You get all the great imagery of the Black Knights moniker without being forced to use black in the colour scheme or have an awkward, four word name. Plus the wordplay with "Las Vegas Nights" which is as far as the "Sin City" connotations can go without being hokey.

It'd be pretty great if the Utah Grizzlies were the Utah Grizzliezz.

No, no it wouldn't. Gimmicky spellings if words as a team name i.e. Fire Antz, Starzz, is a worse trend than collective nouns ever was.

It's an apple...as in the snake and the apple and Adam and Eve...I guess that's more reason why it's not the greatest logo lol

I actually thought it was an apple, but couldn't figure out what apples and snakes had to do with Las Vegas, so I thought I was wrong and it was a cherry in reference to the cherries on slot machines, and the snake was also some kind of obscure gambling reference. Oops.

While this topic has (rightfully so) gone in the direction of speculation of the team name, I thought it was impressive that they had so many original logos in the ESPN article.  They all had thick strokes and were very pictorial, but they had cool colors and were all unique to the NHL, at least at first glance.  That's why I love the Flamingos one so much... definitely won't fly (pun intended) in the NHL because it's also a name brand for a casino, but the colors are unique.

So if Black Knights is not the best name choice, which other names could be used without invoking gambling?

If the apple and snake are referring to Adam and Eve, those two eating that Apple was the original sin.  And what's Las Vegas also known as?  Sin City.

Foley should take a lesson from the "Charlotte Bobcats" and realize that a team owner cramming something that's personal only to him down the throats of a market doesn't typically work out too well these days.  Like a smart businessman he should let the market dictate how he brands his club by making it something meaningful to the region and his base of ticket buyers. Foley seems like a bright guy and not an ego maniac so I assume he'll go this route.

Knights, be they black or any other other color, is extremely generic (movie team name!) and means nothing to the people of Las Vegas.  Vegas and the surrounding area are more closely tied to the US Air Force, not freaking West Point.

I'm not sure about that. The Army base Ft. Irwin is within driving distance of Vegas and i know quite a few people go to Vegas or Los Angels on weekends, or on leave etc.

I could do without religious references in sports logos, though I can appreciate the symbolism / creativity.

Either way I stand by my statement that it's not a good major league logo.

The team name is the Las Vegas Sin... Hence the original sin reference.. It's not a reference to "Sin City" (although that was almost assuredly the inspiration for the team's nickname..)

Nellis AFB is in the Las Vegas area, plus Area 51 is part of the Air Force.

When do expansion teams typically announce their name?
