2016 NBA Offseason thread

That's so funny. Everyone was crazy for picks all season long, but now that they have to use them, they don't want to. Or at least they don't want to take the guys where they have picks.

Sam Presti was on the Woj podcast last week and talked about taking Westbrook at 4 overall, even though most people didn't have him as a lottery pick (I guess. I don't remember). But lottery picks are so hit or miss anyway, that it probably makes the most sense to just pick the guy you want. Especially since rookies are getting screwed this year anyway.

Joe Lacob really likes to talk and loves revisionism.

Excerpt (bolded by me):

Quote

Though the Golden State Warriors may have lost the NBA Championship, the team’s primary owner Joe Lacob stopped lamenting within the hour of losing, he said at Stanford’s Director’s College summit Tuesday.

“We will scratch and claw every single day,“ Lacob said with a stern voice and firm fist against his chair arm. “That’s why I couldn’t wait one hour after Sunday’s loss to start getting the team ready for next year.”

Lacob said the Warriors intentionally lead trends only to look for the next — almost a prerequisite for anyone in Silicon Valley business.

“We drove this idea of small ball, and it’s a different style of play,” he said. “Having said that, I think it’s important to know that whenever everyone else starts doing things, it’s time to start doing what’s next. We’re on to the next idea — How can we iterate to evolve to get an advantage? I can assure you we’re very forward thinking in that regard.”

He said the Warriors were the reason for the higher market cap for what teams could pay for players. The projected salary cap for the 2016–17 season rose on Tuesday to $94 million, according to Sports Illustrated.

Lacob talked about the Warriors' use of technology in a money ball-type strategy that will produce better odds for coming seasons. ( The Wall Street Journal did an entire feature on it, which Lacob said was entirely accurate). The team is even using artificial intelligence to help players predict the most accurate moves to take. “We do a lot of data analysis from day one,” Lacob said. “We want to be the first to bring new technology."

But decisions don’t fall entirely on the basis of data, Lacob said. It’s a combination of both judgment and data. “They don’t always come together, but we sit there until it does. We come to a confluence of, 'What do we really need in this team?'”

The NBA probably needs to intervene in Sacramento. Or maybe Obama can buy the Kings (although where is he getting a billion dollars?).

The fact that agents are steering both free agent and now draft pick clients away from the franchise is really, really bad. Especially when the new arena opens this year.

Rondo is leaving (if he's smart, and he is), and no one wants to play with Boogie. Also, no one wants Vivek's money.

Sacramento isn't a bigger mess than it was with the Maloofs, but only because there's a new arena.

As we're inching closer to the Draft, there's going to be more wheeling-and-dealing; Marc Spears is reporting that the Thunder may shop Serge Ibaka, and I saw a blurb/rumor on Yahoo earlier that GarPax (credit to smoke072) may shop Jimmy Butler to Miami (I can't find a credible link).

We're in a world where Thaddeus f-n Young is worth the #20 overall and a 2nd round pick. Larry Bird has lost his mind.

God help us all.

In a weak draft -- that's not a bad pick up. But, what they're doing as a whole remains to be seen.

Serge Ibaka for Oladipo AND Sabonis Jr? That's a bad trade for Orlando and an excellent one for OKC. Sam Presti is a good GM.

Marquese Chriss for Dragan Bender + picks = nicely done Kings. I didn't think they had it in them.

From what I've seen the Suns ended up with both Chriss and Bender.  The Kings acquired the Suns’ No. 13 and No. 28 picks and the rights to Serbian guard Bogdan Bogdanovic.

A large number of small donations?

That is a REALLY bad deal for Orlando. Adding a guy with the scoring potential that Oladipo has to that already potent OKC lineup is interesting, and it gives Durant something to really think about.

And NOW there's rumors that Minnesota didn't even really want Jimmy Butler, but Thibs just wanted to string the Bulls along, because, I don't know why. Maybe so they wouldn't get a different deal done?

BOY SURE WOULD BE A SHAME IF TOM THIBODEAU MESSED WITH GAR FORMAN'S JOB I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY ANYONE WOULD WANT TO DO THAT.

This is crafty, that's for sure.

Dropping Butler and keeping Rose is good. Valentine might be a good player. Robin Lopez is not bad, and Noah is done in Chicago. They've done okay this week.
