If you're going to name a club after something mythical or nearly non existent at least go with Dragons or some type of scary creature. I can tell you it's not mythical (have been in thundersnow a couple of times*), but I agree that it's a bad nickname. *Cleveland weather is insane. We have weather phenomena here that happen very few other places (like lake effect precipitation).

rams80
This thread makes me think of two things. 1. I keep underestimating the number of high school gyms in this country because Jesus nobody else would give an ABA team a lease at this point and that was what was assumed to be what would finally do this league in back in the mid-to-late 2000s. 2. I'm surprised we missed the Gwinnett/Georgia "Gwizzlies" which were named as such because of a ing typo on the ownership application and then when they renamed the place name because I dunno they got kicked out of whatever high school gym they were using the ownership was like "no thanks on changing the nickname because we have brand awareness with that name now." PrimalCookie
Until I read this thread (and CC added it to the main site), I had never even heard of the Orlando Wave. At least they have one of the best logos in the league, although that's not hard at all (They have watermarked clip art as a secondary logo, and I could make Team NetWork in less than 10 minutes on Word)

hettinger_rl
I have looked through the whole thread now and the vast majority of these are offal (as in the organ meat that most people don't eat). However there are a few choice cuts that slipped into the grinder: Carolina Cougars, Hawaii Hammerheads, and Springfield Sting come to mind. Some of these teams should be named weird with funny mascots and some should be serious (much like minor-league baseball). Some will end up with bad logos, but if the league/teams get support I'd hope the ownership would invest back. This could be a teir on the pro ladder for basketball. Think of NBA as the top, D-League (Once it's whole) as #2, then the ABA could be in 2 or 3 teirs that are there for players that can't make the grades for college or JUCO. Some of the teams could jump teirs too like in arena football and some of the minor hockey leagues. Maybe we won't have players needing to go overseas to make money. But then again; it could just end up like a national rec-league.
