Out of the bunch Flutie was the one I liked the best. I was really pulling for him during the 99 season.  Music city miracle happened. Was flutie in that game? I don't remember.

No, Rob Johnson started.  I think he started the final week of the season as well.

To his credit, for whatever it's worth, Rob did leave the field having given them the lead with next to nothing on the clock.  The finish was a wash from the QB controversy.

Flutie went 10-5 in the first 15 games of the season. The Bills rested starters in Week 17, including Flutie. Rob Johnson's performance against the Colts (who did have something to play for) got him the playoff gig.

One of if not the most controversial benching(s) in NFL history. Although I don't think it cost the Bills in that game, I didn't like it. I think you go with what you got you there for better or worse and the Bills got to that game by having Doug Flutie under center.

Just think about the message your sending to the guy you just benched. Thanks for leading our team all year long and without you there's no way we would have gotten here. Now with that being said we have the biggest game of the year coming up, so go grab some bench and we'll take it from here.

You want to talk about playing head games with a guy, what do you expect the reaction to be? While I disagree with your decision, I humbly respect it and will do everything I can to help Rob Johnson be the best QB he can be for this team and I also look forward to doing everything I can to help the team next year and beyond. I'm just grateful for the opportunity to be on a playoff caliber team and I just want to help them out however I can and be the best teammate I can be. By the way coach, here are my balls, because I clearly have no use for them if I'm willing to take this lying down.

The rumor is that it was Ralph Wilson who ordered the switch and I'm all but certain that was the case because that's the only person I could see being naïve enough to think that kind of emaciated response would be Flutie's reaction and that you could bring him back next year without any major locker room issues.

The whole thing was gross because Flutie's success literally saved the franchise. Around the time of his signing, the Bills were in the middle of a push to redo then-Rich Stadium, with the very real possibility that they would leave if there wasn't significant community investment in things like suites, luxury boxes, etc. Flutie fever picked up after the disastrous Todd Collins years and the Bills remained in Buffalo.

Rob Johnson, however, had been added to the team at a high costs (maybe a first or second round draft pick), and the Bills never learned about the sunk cost fallacy, and then they lost against Tennessee and the franchise has been cursed ever since.

And to think they fired Wade Phillips after a 10-6 season!

Rob Johnson went on to win a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers. Flutie may have won one with the Patriots but I'm not sure. Buffalo had some ugly ass uniforms and did a good job of developing running backs for the rest of the league (McGahee, Henry, Lynch and I'm sure others).

Tom Brady is 39 this season.  Thirty-nine.  That's legitimately old (for football).  It has to happen one of these years.

Yeah. The whole narrative that he wants to play until 50 is all well and good but he will fall apart. One minor injury may just do him in.

Exactly.. He's not immortal, so if anything happens to him, it might be it.

This is why these first four games are important to New England to see if Grappolo is the heir apparent to Brady or if they need to look elsewhere.

If you saw the Doug Flutie episode of "A Football Life", they aired a clip of the Wade Phillips press conference in which he announced the Johnson starting job.  Philips, without even mentioning names, flat-out said it was management's call on the Flutie benching.  Flutie himself alluded that it Ralph Wilson's call, again without mentioning names.  Everyone pretty much knew it was Wilson's way of justifying paying Johnson the money he did.

I don't get the NFL Network, so no I haven't but I know the series your talking about and its one of if not the best things they do so I'll have to check it out. Flutie's has one of the most interesting stories of anyone to ever play in the NFL.

But it doesn't shock me at all and I'm sure Ralph Wilson had no problem watching that bus run right over Wade Phillips.

In the end it probably worked out for the best. Phillips had decent run in Dallas as their head coach, won a Super Bowl with the Broncos last year and has proven himself to be one of the greatest defensive coordinators in NFL history. The Bills for their part haven't done jack since Phillips left which was over a decade ago. Wade Phillips still remains the last Bills coach to have a winning record during his tenure in Buffalo.

Yeah, for all the crap he gets, Phillips was a good (but not great) head coach...hell, he has a better career winning percentage than Captain Mediocrity (Jeff Fisher) and a dozen other current head coaches, including the man who replaced him in Dallas--Jason Garrett.

Undoubtedly, Flutie's benching and Philips' subsequent firing was one of the dumbest, head-scratching decisions in modern-day NFL history.

Vibe I get is if Jimmy goes 2-2 or better, they'll trade him for hopefully a late 1st rounder or high 2nd rounder next spring.  Brissett seems like the next, next, guy up.

btw, wouldn't Kaepernick be a short term idea for the Vikings?  I've heard/read nothing on that, other than he's basically got no chance for much SF playing time this season.

Holy crap I completely forgot that Rob Johnson was the backup QB on that Super Bowl winning team... To Brad Johnson. Just... Weird.

And their top receiver was Keyshawn Johnson.

There were enough Johnsons on that team to drive Bill Saluga to madness.

I know BBTV will love this, Sam Bradford has just been traded to the vikings. Don't know what the eagles got in return though yet

WHAT???????  You better not be lying to me... I just came in my shorts.

EDIT: just saw that it's true.  Rumor is they're getting a 1st round pick, which they needed to do because the draft is here next year and it's silly to host the draft without a #1 pick.

For 2017 1st round draft pick, and 2018 4th round

Incredible.  Love it.  Chase Daniel sucks big time, but at least now Carson Wentz is closer to playing rather than not even dressing.

They needed to rebuild, not try to win while rebuilding.  This is a good step toward that.

The 2018 4th round pick could turn in to a 3 or even a 2 if the Vikings do well with Bradford.

The Eagles just potentially got a #1 and #2 for Sam "look- a UFO!" Bradford.  Unbelievable.

Rumor is that they love Wentz so much that they scrapped the 'sit two seasons' thing and may start him week 4 after the bye week.

I guess he only needed a month to learn the cultures and the community of Philadelphia....

Yeah he must have toured all the neighborhoods fast. Seriously, they made it sound like they wanted him to hold town halls in each neighborhood so he could hear from the fans and understand their needs and get to know them better.

For a first round pick?!?! Is there a player out there who's ever been more overvalued than Sam Bradford? I'm not sure anyone comes to mind.
