You absolutely would have to pay everyone. Do you know how much negativity and backlash a university would receive if they only paid basketball players but refused to pay their swim team!? This isn't the pros where different sports can negotiate wages. At the end of the day, these are still students. God forbid we don't pay the kid learning to be a doctor or lawyer but hot damn, that boy can slam dunk a basketball! let's pay him! Empty your pockets and give him a free ride for a "degree"

There would be none because the market for basketball players is much, much bigger than the market for swimmers

Yes and that's the problem, this is illegal.

oh we're back to the old "how come teachers and police officers are broke but this guy who can play a sport is a millionaire?" BS. Sorry our society enjoys sports and spends money on them

Yes they also spend millions on the medical and education system. The same education system that is giving these "athletes" an opportunity to play their game at the expense of the institution.

Don't act like these kids are suffering. Every year they show up to the draft in thousand dollar suits and gold chains/diamonds and driving luxury cars.

Every year theres a new school that gets busted for offering prostitutes, parties, money from boosters etc. Now you want to give them MORE money. Oh ok... So now they can buy their own date rape drugs instead of them being supplied by the coaching staff. Very good!

Ah yes, lets analyze where people are from to justify our comments.

I'm sure you are all pushing for fast food workers to make $15 per hour as well because you know, they work hard and make billionaires richer.

Just tossing it out there, there are assistantships and job opportunities that are available to non-athletes that athletes can't receive by rule.

And what about the other 98+%?

Or conversely, if you paid them, the black market would start to die out.

No you would not have to pay everyone, everyone would negotiate what they are worth. If they are worth a scholarship, that's what they get. If they are worth more, they get more.

You are so pollyanna it's ridiculous. NCAA sports being about "education" has been a hollow lie for decades,

Not really, if you're throwing all of the sports into the mix, there are still way more students using athletics as a means to get their education than not. Football and Basketball are the only two that argument really applies to (and to a much lesser degree, Baseball, Hockey and maybe Lacrosse).

Even then, this argument holds a lot less weight for a school like NAU or Liberty, which are still NCAA and offer scholarships, but aren't making money off their athletics like Texas, Ohio St. or Alabama.

Overall, this problem and argument only applies to, at most, 3-5 percent of all NCAA scholarships.

Edit: didn't see the mod calling to knock it off until after the post. Point still stands, but let's start/revive an old thread if we're going to continue.
