Football Helmet Visor Discussion

*dumb guy voice* "they only wear it to look cool"

Well yeah, that's 90% of fashion. I'm not wearing these skinny jeans and $300 vintage concert tshirts out of practicality!* Visors do look cool, but they also keep fingers out of your eyes and rubber field turf pellets out of your face. There's plenty of functionality there.

When Ted Ginn was on the Dolphins he sometimes used one of those kicker facemasks with a visor. I thought it looked cool on a wiry, speedy guy like him

*I don't actually wear this. I'm in my corporate dork uniform of khakis and golf shirt.

I prefer visors. Not only do they look cool, they also provide some additional protection.

I had a clear visor in high school to keep fingers and debris out of my eyes because I wore contacts. I honestly don't know why any football player would play without at least a clear visor on. It seems like a necessary protection thing.

It's a lot harder to see in the rain. They fog up. They get scratched. They can be difficult to put on. They can be even more difficult to take off. They are not free.

I think it's fair game to wear visors if it makes you more comfortable on the field, especially for running backs and wideouts. Even if guys "think" they make them cool, it is is still just another layer of protection so why the hostility? It definitely helps protect the face. With a visor on, It's one less giant hole for a hand to grab and turn their head. I've heard they can make you really hot since there is less ventilation. I guess there is always a trade off.

In 2011 Big Ben wore a visor for several games after his nose was broken. He'd have it removed in the middle of games if it got fogged up from rain. He even wore one for part of super bowl 45.

Remind me, was that from one of his assault victims?

Bad joke. You make it sound like he attacked someone. No, he only pulled his wang out at them in a dirty bar bathroom. Get it right.

This matchup is from 1981, as you can see, #70 Joe Devlin of the Bills has a visor. Many credit Mark Mullaney as the first person to wear a visor in 1984. Which the picture proves to be incorrect.

So it seems like Joe Devlin started the trend. Congrats to him.
