Screw importance to the franchise.  If Oscar Taveras had been the greatest player in the franchise I would have been as unhappy with his initials being on his team's uniform.  He murdered his girlfriend.  We have the Angels remembering the loss of Nick Aidenheart due to a drunk driver, and we have the Cardinals honoring a drunk driver.

I'd thought that Fernandez wasn't driving, and by everyone's comments I guess I was right.  I think that's a very big distinction.  In hindsight, this does seem extremely stupid, but we don't know what was going on.  Someone was sober, who could have been the one who was supposed to be driving.  For all we know, one of his idiot friends could have just grabbed the wheel and hit the gas as hard as possible in a manic fit for the thrill.  I don't know.  Nobody knows.

Taveras drove drunk.  Heck, he drove smashed.  It's pretty cut and dry.  That's a much more abhorrent case on the part of the Cardinals, so I'll give the Marlins the benefit of the doubt on this one.

The Cards aren't an one-off in honoring drunk drivers.

The Flyers did it too when Pelle Limberg died from a drunk driving crash.  THat was the early '80s - I don't know if drunk driving was taken as seriously then as it is now.

They pulled 31 from circulation, but never retired it or honored him.

The Miami Herald story says the family's attorney " insisted Saturday that he was not piloting the vessel when it crashed."

Where does it say the Florida Wildlife Commission confirmed he was driving? Of course his attorney will say he wasn't driving. This confirms nothing. No one knows for sure who was driving that boat when it crashed.

Out of all the Spring Training jerseys, I think I like the Reds' one the most.

I'm surprised that the font works well in a one-color arrangement. Hopefully somebody takes a hint, and the Reds follow in the steps of the Mets, Blue Jays, and Lions in dropping black.

Those other three teams still have secondary colors.

The Reds do have a secondary color, though. White.

Thats all all they need, too. Just give me the Reds 1990 World Series set on the modern template (give or take the new number font, don't care) and call it a day.

The Reds can use white more than other teams (i.e. white outlines on their road greys), therefore elevating it to secondary color status. Besides, not all teams need secondary colors.

I think the Reds, Dodgers, Yankees, and White Sox can get away with specifically saying white is a team color. Maybe the Royals too. Seems weird but one of my little tests on this is, you know the generic idea of a super fan painting their face to go to a game? The one that splits their face in two halves and colors one side of his face one team color and the other side the other team color? What two colors would be used for each team? If white makes sense then I'd say it's a viable choice as an actual team color.
