The Cardinals' version is a raised rubber logo, while the Dodgers' version is a 3D-printed plastic material.. That's why the Cardinals' logo is so smooth and accurate looking, while the Dodgers' logos looks so rigid, sharp, and overly-precise.. It's also why they break so much.. I don't expect to see any of those issues with the Cardinals this year

Dodgers switched to a rubber logo mid-season:

The difference with the Cardinals' logo is the round edges.

Ahhh, good catch.. Yeah, the softer edges would be less offensive visually, and match the cap more accurately.. When you make rubber look like rigid plastic, you did something wrong

WTF? Why?

Is there any team out there who has more unnecessary "alt" caps that are nearly exactly the same as their primary caps sans an outline?

I really hope the Reds yet to be released cap is less disappointing.

We can certainly agree to disagree, but to be clear, I'm not overlooking anything.. giving weight to white as a "cap insignia" color is like giving weight to a dark jersey's number color.. White simply stands out very well against pretty much all medium and dark colors, plus it's neutral, so it's a great choice for teams to add to help their cap logos "pop" more without adding additional colors to their palette..

You included AT LEAST 3 colors for EVERY team.. Imo, that shows exactly why white shouldn't be included in every team's official colors simply because they use it sparingly. And to your point, you'd have to include navy for Toronto (cap insignia), red for Milwaukee (primary logo), the second shade of red for the Angels (primary logo/cap insignia), grey for the Mets (alt cap insignia/alt jersey), grey/lighter orange/lighter blue for Houston (cap insignias/primary logo), and I could go on and on.. The point being that the use of white for visual clarity doesn't automatically elevate it to "official team color" status.. At least in my opinion... I just refuse to accept that EVERY team shares at least official color..

Admittedly, the more accurate choice of words would have been that you "discounted" the cap insignia.  Small outlines and such are one thing, but teams with lettering that is white are a different matter.  The Rays, Tigers, Twins, Astros, Athletics, Rangers, Braves, Marlins, and Brewers all use white lettering on their primary caps.  The Cubs' logo which features on their uniforms doesn't have pinstripes in the negative space because that isn't negative space.  It's a feature.  I consider the outline for the Red Sox B to be as important as the Cardinals' navy outline, a color which is only currently featured by the team as an outline, but which we both listed as their secondary color.

You can argue the Orioles with their outlines.  I'd say the home cap, but white is a traditional blank color for those.  Honestly, looking solely at the uniforms, it's hard to argue.  I've been intimately familiar with the team for years now, and thats the color scheme I've always thought of them as.  People say when they compare the Giants and Orioles or the Astros and Mets, people on here talk about one being a primarily orange team and the other being primarily the other color.  I've never seen that, but over the history or uniforms, merchandise, marketing, and fandom, it feels to me that the Orioles stand out as black/orange/white while the Giants are black/orange.

Also, when taking into account the way teams marketed themselves, the list grew.  Honestly, I'd consider the Yankees, Blue Jays, Royals, Dodgers, and Giants to be two-color teams based on their on-field identities.  Once the Dodger's red came into question, the list grew unwieldy from there.

Either way, I'm certainly good agreeing to disagree.  I just enjoy discussing this out.  Honestly, I probably shouldn't have put the last list out at 5AM because I was tired and just wanted to go to bed.  Then again, I'm doing the same thing this time, and probably forgot some very important points in there somewhere.  XD

The picture I sent was definitely early season.  This is what they looked like later:

Just wait for their black camo caps.

Is that in reference to the space between the "fingers" and the "thumb"?

Yep.   Somebody screwed up the Illistrator file in the 1990s and made the webbing transparent, not white.   The digital files have been fixed but manufacturers keep using the old, incorrect one.

I don't disagree with some of your logic regarding team marketing and intentional branding, but I still disagree with some of your points about cap insignia color and logo negative space/color, etc.. Again, the color   that's typically going to "pop" against a medium/dark background without offending the rest of the color palette is always white.. The rangers, cardinals, braves, and tigers for example, all chose to make the important part of their cap insignia stand out and be more visible from a distance, rather than simply make the outline stand out.. It's the same thing with NFL jersey numbers.. There's a very good reason that 28 of the 32 teams use white numbers on their colored jerseys (with 3 of the 4 others using metallics).. The Browns are the only team who use color-on-color, and it looks awful.. again, I would not say that white is an official team color for every team (perfect example being the raiders, who feature white in their primary logo/helmet looking for clarity, but who everyone knows are just black and silver)..

We've got to remember that white and grey are natural options to include as unofficial neutral colors because league rules dictate it through home/away uniform rules (or historical conventions regarding uniforms).. The Indians, for example, use a solid red C on their cap, and everyone complains about how much they need to add an outline.. If they were to use an outline simply for visual assistance, it wouldn't automatically have to become an official color (intentionally disregarding the Wahoo hat, which includes white for biological accuracy, but again, not to necessarily force it into the team's official palette)..

Also, wasn't bent out of shape by your choice of wording, just pointing out that it wasn't overlooked.. I'm also enjoy the debate, so keep firing away lol..

I'm all for making batting helmets look more like the caps. Heck, I wouldn't mind if flocking returned:

The fabric-like fuzz is a nice touch, and it's a nice bit of evidence to show that 3D logos aren't exactly new.

I can't help but think of Brett's hair helmet from Flight of the Conchords

Remove the yellow outline from the P & well, make the yellow cap "yellow" & not mustard, and that Pirates cap would look so much better.

I think it's a white outline around the P.  If It's a yellow outline...then that hat is really terrible.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Looks pretty yellow to me.  That Pirates cap it probably trying to envoke a camo sand/brown shade.  Looks like baby sh** to me.

Once enlarged, the outline is pretty clearly white.  The color of the hat is indeed baby :censored:.

It's unnecessary but the white looks good on their alt jersey (I actually wish one of the yellow sleeve and collar pipings was white) and it'd look strange if there was an outline on the jersey but not on the hat.

A yellow bill probably would help make it seem less superfluous.

Mets look super weird with white names & numbers on the back.

Almost every team looks weird with the white names and numbers. It's so bad. It's like they forgot to color in the letters and numbers. And all this for the stupid spring training subliminated designs that no one can even see unless you're literally standing a foot behind the player. At least last year the subliminated designs were in the correct colors for each jersey.

Looks like not everyone on the Rockies is a huge fan of the new shade of purple.  http://www.denverpost.com/2017/02/16/rockies-new-color-purple-clubhouse-review/

Their old jerseys looked more blue than purple. With a league so overrun with shades of blue and red, it's refreshing to see the Rockies wear something different.

I loved the blue-violet shade of purple but looking at the new ones I can understand why they went with this change and I can live with it. As a matter of fact I appreciate a team making a change like this that is for nothing but aesthetic consistency only. More teams should care about their aesthetics like the Rockies just did. Some do, but not all.
