Easily the best Astros look. And i know, unpopular opinion.

Feels like that would have been better received if that was their first look and original concept, or if that was whole new expansion team altogether. I think suddenly adopting an Old Western Railroad theme after using a Futuristic Space Program theme for 30 years is was shot that one in the foot from day one.

If they'd gone through with their plans to re-name the team the "South Texas Railmen", then yes.

For the "Astros", no.

Is it the colors or the script or just the entire look that makes you say that?

I've warmed up to the Astros look and color scheme a bit since it first came out. They still need to use orange more and make the orange a primary cap and helmet at home. They could probably even ditch the all navy cap or just make that the road cap. But I still absolutely HATE the H star logo they use on the caps. That was crap back in the day, and it's even worse now wth all of the pointless bevels. Had they just kept the previous open ended star and put it in the current colors, they would've looked great.

Both.  All of it.

It's a fine Old West set, from the dusty color scheme to the filigreed scripts.  Stands well enough on its own, but extremely discordant with the name.

I get the argument that it didn't fit with the team name but I always dug the Old West look. I mean, they do play in Texas.

I think the 94-99 Astros brand (my favorite Astros set) would look pretty awesome again today, especially if they had matte (or satin) batting helmets with 3D logos.  The thin star logo often got lost on helmets in the 90s.  The dark navy and the gold definitely worked better for the team than the Old West scheme.

How about if the Yankees wore something other than red white and blue, like green and gold?

Or if the team named the Jetsons dressed in wooly mammoth inspired uniforms.

THAT name and THAT uniform are just at odds with each other. I don't dislike that uniform, but I do for THAT nickname.

I liked the shooting star much better when it was actually shooting

The train station star took all the movement out of it and just made it look like a star that was missing a piece.

That would work, too. Both of those stars were great. I think the stationary open ended star was a bit less cheesy, but they're still two of my all time favorite MLB logos.

Depends on your frame of reference. You can make the argument for it being a better look on an aesthetic basis and even for the Astros themselves, considering the Astros wore those uniform styles longer than any other style. In the previous 38 seasons, they either switched nicknames, reversed colors for primary and secondary (1971 switch to orange), switched to rainbow guts, and then later to rainbow sleeves before swapping orange for gold for six seasons.

In a vaccum, I think it's the pinstripes and red-trimmed road uniforms above look good. I loved the cap when it first came out. I have the same opinion about the mid-to-late 1990s navy and gold uniforms. My problem with the red and black (and navy and gold) is that I grew up in the '70s/80s so my frame of reference for the Astros is shooting star/rainbows with navy and orange colors. To me, the Astros' identity is navy and orange. The red and black looks good, but it's not the Astros to me.

Others can disagree, especially if they were kids when the Astros switched to this. To argue to a college kid that the Astros should be in navy and orange because that's their identity is a problem because the college kid may have only known the Astros in red and black (or navy and gold).

That's why when a team makes a mistake with its identity, it needs to correct that mistake ASAP before a certain section of fans only come to know that team in those uniforms. The Padres are an even better example of this. I think they should be brown and yellow (or at least brown) because I associate that with the Padres identity as a kid growing up. But they haven't worn brown on a full-time basis since 1990.

That would have been a good look if the Astros had actually gone through with changing their name to the Railmen, like they were planning on doing (and had a different cap logo to match).

But for a team whose identity was based on space exploration, the railroad/old-timey theme made absolutely no sense. Of course, it's not like their current uniforms fit the theme any better.

The White Sox beach blanket came to mind when I read this. The uniform lasted 5 years and was bad. But it was worn by a playoff team and is closely associated with a beloved player in Fisk, so it became a kitschy marker of the youth of middle aged fans that I'll probably be seeing for the rest of my life at Sox games.

I didn't know the Astros were ever thinking about changing to Railmen. I'm glad they didn't, but I'd like to know more about that.

The railroad uniforms would've been great for the Round Rock Express or a handful of other minor league identities, but the absolute wrong identity for the Astros. The intentional blahness of the current uniforms, not even attempting to present a theme is what bothers me so much about them. It's a real missed opportunity, but a generic look is still better than a look that is presenting the brand in a way that is directly antithetical to their namesake. I'm hoping that once navy blue and orange is reestablished as theirs then they can get a little more adventurous with their next set. I'd like them to explore the tequila sunrise pattern more.

I can't find a news article to back it up at the moment, but the rumor was that the Astros were going to change their name to either the Houston Diesels or the South Texas Railmen when they moved into then-Enron Field. It doesn't sound that outrageous to me, seeing as how Minute Maid Park was built on the former Union Station site. That would also explain why the park had a model train on the left-field wall. I remember people mentioning the rumor on here back when the Astros were still wearing those uniforms.
