But I can't see the NBA coming back. Not with this current group and the current plan. If Ballmer were still around or Bezos became interested, maybe. But all the random dudes who are part owners of the Knicks and Celtics and whatever else? This certainly does not seem like a great reason. I know there is some history but it's never struck me as the most hockey-fervent place. Sport Posted June 13, 2017 Share Posted June 13, 2017 I think Seattle would eventually be a good hockey market because hockey is cool and people like hockey once they know the sport and have a team of their own, but they'd have to know going in that they're starting from almost 0 and would have to invest in growing the game just like it's a sunbelt market. They've had the TBirds and Everett has the Silvertips, but only a couple people I knew there had any passing interest in the sport and I only knew one other true fan. There's not a lot of rinks and participation in the sport didn't seem to be that high so they'd have to build more facilities. For the lifelong residents it's just not on the radar at all. But while there are a lot of hipsters there's also a lot of blue collar, lumberjack and shipping descendants who like getting drunk at Seahawks games and I could see those types getting into hockey if it's put in front of them. And it's a metro of almost 4 million and growing, which doesn't hurt. One thing it has going for it is it's become a big transplant city which could help carry attendance for some opponents in the early years until the locals latch on and become diehards. I also don't think hockey is a bloodsport, though I do think rooting for fighting at WHL games is gross and weird (and I've been to three). Seattle has a rich basketball history, especially at the high school level. Assuming we don't completely gentrify traditional basketball communities (which is rapidly and actively happening), that should stay true for at least one more generation. Jamal Crawford, Garu Payton, Shawn Kemp, Nate Robinson and Isaiah Thomas have a big presence in the community and I would expect that to continue. Hockey would do fine here because a lot of people have more money than they know what to do with and love buying local sports merchandise (with the exception of the Storm, which I never see anywhere). That said, I do see lots of hockey sweaters at TBirds games but really nowhere else. There's the random Flyers or Rangers hat around, but even during the Cup finals I didn't see any Penguins (and definitely not Predators) gear about. I certainly saw Warriors stuff. The Seattle metro area has basically doubled in size since the Sonics left. There's at least some hockey support in that population. You would get some amount of cross border fans from the Vancouver area coming down to Seattle for some games. I know quite a few of those "Chicago dirtbags" (That's their term. And I mean that as a term of endearment, as a lot of those dudes are really close friends of mine. I assume you know the kind I'm talking about). But I probably know just as many if not more "dirtbaggy" people from Seattle than I do from Chicago. I know Seattle gives off that vibe of snobbiness akin to San Francisco and aims in a lot of ways for a certain air of sophistication, but there are just as many people in Seattle who wanna get :censored:ed up and watch people hit each other as there are those who go around after Comic Con looking for fair trade restaurants that specialize in quinoa dishes. Just look at their music scene. There's a reason there two top musicians died of drug overdoses.
