Should never have gotten away from this.

It's a little dated but it's unique and their brand was recognizable for it.

But hey, they need a symbol that can be quickly identified on twitter and as an App icon.  Swastika thing it is.

You're right that they should have stayed with that logo.  Or, even better, they should have gone back to their truly classic logo, which had been unchanged for so long.

This brand deserves to be represented by a logo that evokes a newspaper masthead.  Even if they no longer publish a physical newspapers, the strength of the brand lies in carrying that imagery forward. And that Old English-style Sporting News mark is as identifiable as the Old English wordmark of the New York Times.

The new "SN" logo is clever; but it strikes a note totally discordant to the brand's feel.  For an app icon, the Sporting News could have just used the S from the classic wordmark, just as the Times uses the T from its wordmark.

Pulling the SN from the classic wordmark would work fine for an app or social media. Better than the previous italic SN.

The new logo isn't terrible. It just has the same feel as any other sports blog.

Absolutely no one will recognize that as being "The Sporting News." People will see that icon and think "what's that vaguely-swastika-looking SZ logo?" I can almost guarantee that, just like their current SN-in-a-circle logo, will gather absolutely no brand recognition.

They really should've stuck with the old masthead logo. I had honestly forgotten that they moved away from it - that's how forgettable their entire brand (and website) is now. The "SN" from it could've been their icon.

I would've utilized both the S & N, but your point is still very valid. In fact, I even went ahead and mocked up something using the old style SN. I feel like the old-timey look would suit them better but who am I?
