Colombian authorities say 76 people including members of a Brazilian soccer team were killed in a plane crash Monday night in northwestern Colombia. Six people initially survived the crash, but one of them died a short time later, authorities said.

The charter aircraft took off from Bolivia and was flying over the town of La Union at around 10 p.m. when electrical flaws were reported, according to a statement from the José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro, Colombia. The plane crashed shortly after in a mountainous area in the Antioquian municipality, about 22 miles from the airport, which serves the city of Medellin.

There were 72 passengers and nine crewmembers on board, including members of Chapecoense, a Brazilian first division soccer team. The team was expected to play in the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin.

Really classy move from Atletico Nacional, the team they were on their way to play in the Copa Sudamericana final, who've asked that Chapcoense be awarded the trophy

What is the plan (if any) had this happened to one of the major U.S./Canada teams? Is there something in place if (example only) the Dallas Cowboys plane crashes and kills the team? Just curious and R.I.P. to the soccer team (and others killed in the crash).

Emergency draft from the rest of the league.

/May have looked this up during the "Triumph of Death" years for the Rams.

This has actually been brought up before here. I think when that Russian Hockey team (Locomotiv, I think?) died in a plane crash. Each of the four major sports leagues have a pretty detailed contingency plan in place in the event something like this happens. I'm not sure how public they are, but I think at least one of the leagues has made the details fairly transparent.

Wikipedia has a pretty good rundown:

Funerals were held today in the Chapecoense home ground, and even though you see the number '76 dead' and you see photos of the crash itself, it's another thing entirely to see what a funeral for dozens looks like at once.  Semi-trailers backed up to the stadium so that the military could offload the caskets and bring them in for services, that trailer depart and then another brought in to do it again, several times.  Torrential rains during the service had portions of the field under standing water.  Thankfully there was only one fixed camera position actually in the tent, mounted near the ceiling actually showing those assembled with the caskets.

Goal.com is reporting that CONMEBOL has agreed to award the title and prize money to Chapecoense.

Here is an article that gives some ideas of how the Australian Football League might react if a similar tragedy occurred.

It is interesting to see how the "top-up" provision was used with Essendon, whose team was decimated not through an airplane crash, but due to suspensions due to illegal drug use.
