JCRGraphix Posted December 31, 2016 Author Share Posted December 31, 2016 1995-96 The 1995-96 regular season was dominated by young talent. In the Eastern European Division, young goalies Martin Brodeur of Kiev and Nikolai Khabibulin of Moscow backstopped their respective clubs to first and second place in the division, while Corey Hirsch suprised critics by putting together an impressive record to bring the St. Petersburg Horsemen back into the playoff picture. In the Western European Division, the crazy talented Helsinki Icebreakers finished atop the division led by the scoring of league-leader Eric Lindros. The Stockholm Norsemen were also solid finishing second with a solid performance from rookie Daniel Alfredsson. The Copenhagen Hammer also found their way back into the playoffs after using four different goalies throughout the season including Tim Cheveldae, Jon Casey, Rick Tabaracci, and Mike Bales. In the Western North American Division, the Winnipeg Lakers tied with the Ontario Americans for first place in points, but the Lakers had a better goal differential, so the Lakers won the division. The Americans played young Jim Carey in the majority of their games in place of the injured Mike Richter. He did so well that he earned the Howe Trophy as League MVP, and finished second in voting to Martin Brodeur for the Tretiak Trophy. Wayne Gretzky had another solid year finishing third in overall scoring and propelling the Toronto Bucks back into the playoff picture in the East while Ed Belfour and the Boston Irish continued to dominate the highly competitive division. The 1995-96 season also saw hockey in some new locales including Belgrade, Buffalo, Houston, and London. Belfour's luck ran out in the playoffs though as the first-place Boston Irish fell to the Toronto Bucks in the first round in only four games. The Montreal Quebecois skated past the Brooklyn Emperors in 6 games, but were eliminated in the division final by the Bucks. In the West, the Winnipeg Lakers matched up against the Saskatoon Blazers again, and eliminated them in 5 games while the Ontario Americans swept the Seattle Orcas. The Americans went on to defeat the Lakers in 5 and swept the Bucks to earn another trip to the Global Cup Finals. The Eastern European Division playoffs were absolutely brutal with both series going to 7 games. Tretiak-winner Martin Brodeur and the Kiev Angels edged the St. Petersburg Horsemen and Dominik Hasek and the Prague Golems edged the Moscow Stars. The Angels would go on to beat the Golems in 6 to win the division. In the West, the Stockholm Norsemen swept the Copenhagen Hammer in an embarrassing series. After game 4, Tim Cheveldae announced his retirement effective immediately despite having another two years on his contract. The Helsinki Icebreakers needed 6 games to eliminate the tricky Warsaw Winged Hussars despite the Hussars putting up a huge fight. The Icebreakers were all black and blue when they finally faced their rivals from Stockholm in the division finals. Despite jumping to a 2-0 lead, the Icebreakers ran out of steam and were eliminated in 7 games by the Norsemen. The conference finals were a wild affair as well with the games going back and forth until Martin Brodeur shut out the Norsemen in game 7 to earn their second consecutive trip to the Global Cup Finals. For fans of goaltending, the first four games of the Global Cup Finals were a masterpiece, but for those who are fans of high scoring affairs, they were dreadful as Carey and Brodeur traded shutouts 2-0, 1-0, 1-0 (OT), and 2-0. After changing up their lines, the Angels were finally able to figure out Carey and won the next two games handily to win the 1996 Global Cup. After the playoffs, the Ontario Americans' owner shocked the WHL fans by announcing that the team would play half of their home games in Oakland and relocate entirely in the 1997-98 season. They would keep the name Ontario Americans for the 1996-97 season, but change to the Oakland Americans in the 1997-98 season. Regular Season Standings: European Conference: Eastern Division: 1.
