The Giants just flat out suck now.

Yeah I thought they could bounce back, but the pitching is absolutely atrocious. I honestly can't see an In-season fix for this bullpen, and it already kinda feels like a lost year. This team is 07-08 level bad minus the crazy prospect pipeline, so this may not be an easy fix at all. It's kinda pushing "Trade Cueto for prospects" territory and I can't believe I'm even considering that. I knew it'd come eventually, but it still feels weird.

I wouldn't mind that kind of trade, provided the haul was good. Bullpen and outfield prospects, preferably. The outfield defense has been garbage, thanks to a combo of injury, age, and lack of talent.

Bobby Evans is so fired after this season, if not during the season.

Yeah, bring Sabes back or do a Cubs get Theo style GM grab. This dude isn't gonna work.

The pitching could be better definitely, but that's not the main culprit. The team has the 2nd worst OPS in the majors(ahead of only KC).

Just now, The Six said:

The Giants traded Matt Duffy for Matt Moore.

Who got them to the playoffs last year and nearly pushed the NLDS to Game 5 (ruined because of a still-mangled bullpen), while Duffy has played under 30 games since the trade due to his achilles problems. Duffy's 2015 was never going to be replicated, and the team had to sell high on him before he turned into a liability. It's one of the few Bobby Evans moves that meets my approval.

Bobby Evans has got to go.

Can't say for sure that Duffy would have gotten injured if he hadn't been traded. Moore just looks like he doesn't know how to pitch now. I understand the Giants needed pitching, but Duffy was a lot to give up for the largely unspectacular, and now mostly poopy Moore.

The injury issues first appeared while Duffy was still with the Giants. His 2016 season was far beneath his 2015, and it looked like he was trending downwards (frustratingly, Bochy would bat him third - like batting Gorkys towards the top of the order this year). The team had to sell high on him, especially with Arroyo coming up and with a lack of solid pitching. He'd be another albatross on a team that already has plenty of them.

Moore is having a bad stretch, yes. He was and still is better than the other options from within the organization (can't rush Beede, Blach wasn't ready yet, a weak free agent class, etc.). Moore still has potential, and has show that he can reach it. I still have some faith in the guy.

Yeah, losing Duffy hurt at first, but ultimately it wasn't really that big of a loss. Nunez has given them probably similar production with more speed, and Arroyo has been just waiting in the wings as it is. Moore has his struggles, but has also shown flashes of brilliance that make me feel like he's still got a pretty high ceiling. It was a pretty good trade if you ask me.

The REALLY awful pitching related move was giving Jeff Samardzija $90 million. That's WAY more egregious given the all over the place production he's provided.

Samardzija then goes and puts up 8 innings of one-run pitching. He's inconsistent, but at this juncture, inconsistent will do.

Joe Mauer hit the first walk-off homer of his career last night. 1) As one of my favorite players in my Jr. High/High School days, it's sure great to see a Mauer sighting, and 2) of course he's never been a power threat, but that was his first regular season walk-off homer ever? I could've sworn he had one back in '09 or '10 or something like that.

So, I feel like all teams have that one year where they look pretty decent on paper and look like they could contend, only to turn around and have an absolutely atrocious season. This can happen due to players who previously overachieved coming back down to earth, players who are normally pretty good underachieving, old players finally having that "I'm too old for this :censored:" moment, and just plain old dumb luck. You combine a few of those and it's gonna be a struggle to compete. You combine all of them, though? You're looking at a 100 loss season. 2017 looks to be that kinda season for the San Francisco Giants.

I’m not too worried about it, though. This stuff happens. The 2012 Red Sox were absolute trash when they should’ve been pretty good, made some adjustments, and ended up winning the World Series in 2013. The Giants may need to retool a bit (and I kinda get this hunch that this may be Bochy's last season for a few different reasons), and though it may be tough, that usually does some good for teams.

I agree. The thing is, I really don't trust the Giants' front office and ownership to go through with a retool/soft rebuild. The late-90's/early-00's teams went out Theseus' Ship style (slowly fading rather than rebuilding in a swift stroke), and I'm not sure how much the Giants' draft haul from the past few years will pay off. Outside of Cueto, there aren't many major league-level players to trade and net the kind of haul the Sox did in 2012/13. This is a longer term effort.

It sucks to see Bochy so tired and pained. He's got his Hall of Fame career, and I think it's in his best interests to retire and leave on his own terms (not going out like Charlie Manuel).
