Quite a few white kits again this week, along with monochrome, with eight teams wearing white, and fifteen teams wearing monochrome. Atlanta/Colorado is my choice for matchup of the week, and I'd say it's one of my favorites of the season so far as well. Aside from that, the Hudson River Derby looked just as good as it did a couple of weeks ago in the USOC, and I thought Houston/FCD was pretty nice as well. In Minnesota/Vancouver, the Loons wore white at home for the second straight game, this time seemingly out of necessity since neither of Vancouver's kits would've contrasted well enough with Minnesota's grays. Since the Loons wore white, the Whitecaps, who were the last team who had yet to deviate from their primaries, finally wore their secondaries for the first time this season. Although NYCFC technically has deviated from their primaries when they wore the Parley kits, they are now the only team in the league who has yet to wear their secondaries this season. Lastly, I'll just say that I thought Portland/Seattle was a fantastic looking game with a great nostalgic feel to it. The Sounders looked like they did in the '80's, and the Timbers looked like they did in the mid-70's, and the matchup as a whole just felt right. I'd say it's the best looking edition of that rivalry since both teams have been in MLS.

Also, a couple of things I forgot to mention. The Galaxy wore these warmup tops:

And the Union wore these in pregame:

I was watching that game and did not see any pregame coverage. I'm glad I didn't!

San Jose vs. Seattle:

And lastly, the one midweek league game:

NYCFC vs. Minnesota:

IMG_5571.thumb.JPG.5e8cc64cc0fcf1dbe94d58b281101f55.JPG

Keeper kits: green (NYCFC) vs. red (Minnesota)

Refs: yellow

Toronto/Montreal was a decent looking game, as were most of the other midweek matches. As far as the Open Cup games go, I thought FCD/Colorado looked the best, although it would've looked even better had Dallas worn their white shorts instead of red. Cincinnati/Chicago was an interesting looking game, and, although the orange on the front of Cincinnati's kits clashed a little bit with Chicago's reds, the overall contrast was pretty nice, especially from the back. Houston/SKC looked nice as well, thanks in part to SKC wearing navy shorts with their primaries for just the second time this season. Lastly, I'll just say that Miami/Atlanta was another interesting looking game, with Miami's blue and orange against Atlanta's gray and red. Now, in the one league game of the week, NYCFC wore their secondaries for the first time this season, and they just so happened to do so against Minnesota, the same team that forced Vancouver to wear their secondaries for the first time this season just last weekend. NYCFC was the home team so I'm not sure why they wore the hypnokits since they've already worn their primaries with the navy shorts against a couple of different teams wearing mono-white this season. In any case, with NYCFC wearing their secondaries for the first time in 2017 MLS play, every team in the league has now worn both (or in Seattle's case, all three) of their kits at least once this season.

We always wear the change kits once at home regardless of clash considerations.   Can't sell the shirts if you never wear them.

Of the eight games over the weekend, I thought SKC/Portland had the best kit matchup, with two beautiful color schemes matched up against one another. Columbus/Atlanta also looked really nice, just as it did the first time around. FCD/Toronto had somewhat of an intrasquad scrimmage look to it, but I still thought it was a nice kit matchup, and I'd say Colorado/Houston was nice as well. Lastly, the Union/Revolution matchup was obviously very fitting for Fourth of July weekend, and the kit matchup followed suit with a really nice "American" feel to it.

Atlanta will wear the gray and red kits today at home for the very first time ever. I suspect it's for an American theme night and there will probably be flag inspired numbers like that Philly training top. Atlanta is generally very committed to wearing the red and black stripes as much as possible so this is probably just for Independence Day.

I think that it's due to the matchup. ATL UTD's red and black primary would clash with both San Jose's primary (blue and black) and clash (white and red).  The only option left was to wear the gray and red kit with San Jose wearing their primary.

That's definitely not it. They've already worn their striped kits against the Red Bulls' primaries and DCU's secondaries so far this season, so they easily could've worn them against San Jose's away kits as well.

The latter is especially close to what the kit matchup would've been like had Atlanta worn their primaries against San Jose's white and red kits, so it wouldn't have been a problem at all. I'd say @aawagner011 is more on the right track for why they decided to wear the secondaries at home.

Color me cynical, but I think it's more about promoting sales of the gray shirts. I'm convinced that's the reason NYCFC wears their change kit at home one game per season.

You don't think the red stripe on the SJ's clash kit would've caused a problem against Atlanta's red and black stripes?  I think that red stripe makes the difference as to why that would clash and RBNY and DC wouldn't.  That stripe plus red sleeves and I could see the refs or whomever wanting a higher contrast matchup.

No, I really don't think that makes a difference at all. In fact, I'd say DCU's secondary is worse because of the black and gray graphic pattern on the front, but even that contrasted perfectly fine with Atlanta's red and black stripes. Given that, I firmly believe San Jose's secondary would've contrasted just fine as well, and maybe even a little better.

Fair enough.  I always think it's interesting as to what can constitute a clash and what doesn't.

A bit late on posting this, but here's how the midweek matches from this past week looked:

Also, and I think they were the only ones to do this, but the Dynamo wore these special numbers against Montreal:

IMG_5816.thumb.JPG.3f5c3831d6c588d499d433ffc4a9224f.JPG

Anyways, and as previously mentioned, it was a bit surprising to see Atlanta wear their secondaries at home for the first time, although I think it actually made for a more attractive matchup than what it would've been had Atlanta worn their primaries and the Quakes their secondaries. Other than that, I don't have much to say for the week. I thought Orlando/Toronto looked terrific, as did Houston/Montreal. Minnesota/Columbus was a unique looking matchup, while Portland/Chicago, Colorado/Seattle, and SKC/Philadelphia were all pretty standard but still fairly nice nonetheless. None of the other matchups looked bad per se, I was just a bigger fan of the ones already mentioned.

I've been really busy the last few weeks, and therefore haven't had much time to track the kit matchups from the games that've taken place since the Gold Cup break ended (along with the Open Cup games that occured during the GC break). Instead of going back and collecting pictures and info for all of those games, I plan on resuming my tracking of the kit matchups with this week's All Star Game and the ensuing matches over the weekend.

And speaking of the All Star Game, here's our first look at the full kit that'll be worn against Real Madrid:

IMG_6599.thumb.JPG.c20e406375db32bd310e5607c800dda7.JPG

As if the shirt wasn't enough, they'll be wearing red shorts to make the kit more of an authentic throwback to the US denim kits:

Yuck. Terrible idea to replicate one of the USMNT's worst looks of all time.

That's actually kind of hilarious.

Real is going to kill them, right? Too bad Caleb Porter isn't coaching the MLS All-Stars team. It'd be fun to see some hard fouls so Zidane can headbutt him after the game. (Boo! Lame-ass 2006 World Cup joke!)

Ugh.  White or blue shorts could have looked great.   Red is too much.

I figured this would happen based on training gear.  I actually like that they're going all in on a "fauxback" uniform for the game.

Seeing conflicting reports on an MLS/Adidas deal increase.

Those are very far-apart numbers!

MLS currently getting $15 mil per year, right? Doubling up seems like good business, going more than 10x the current rate seems almost hard to believe... but it's a different league nowadays.
