Golden State

Houston

Oklahoma City

San Antonio

Utah isn't beating one of those four.

Youve got me at Golden State and San Antonio (if we're talking only this season), but Oklahoma City is certainly beatable (zero depth after the big 2 1/2 - Adams doesn't quite make a big three) and I think Utah would have a good shot against Houston in a seven game series. Agree to disagree I guess. I just think Utah is better and can be better than people are giving them credit for.

If Hayward's goal is to win an NBA championship, staying in Utah isn't the place to do it.  Golden State isn't going to disappear as long as Curry and Durant are there.  San Antonio will always be up there, it seems.  Houston looks poised to battle the Spurs for the right to play Golden State in the West Finals for the next couple seasons.  Oklahoma City is going for it this year, and if all that smoke has substance, LeBron is heading to Los Angeles after this season.  The peak for Utah is where they got to last year...swept in the West Semis.

Compare that to the East, where Cleveland may fall apart after this season.  There's Boston, and then a whole lot of dreck after that.  The path to the NBA Finals is a lot easier in the East, especially if LeBron does leave the Cavaliers.

The Wolves are making a pretty serious play for a two-year period during which Golden State will win at least 140 regular season games and lose fewer than four playoff games.

Gun to my head, I say they squeak into the playoffs.  But they certainly won't be opening at home.

Boston (and likely Miami, maybe Toronto and I guess Philadelphia) can run the East for the next five post-LeBron years. Every other team has spent the last 10 years being scared of LeBron rather than trying to beat him. Indiana giving PG away for a song is the worst yet.

If Hayward wants to play in the NBA Finals, he should go to Miami or Boston. Probably Boston. You do have to think though that after the 17/18 season, FAs start heading back East again. LeBron will be 35 (right?) and definitely not the dominant player he is now.

If not to make the finals, then to make an All-Star team.

That's actually a good point. I know that All-NBA awards equal huge contract bonuses, but I would assume that there are All-Star nods equal bonuses too. Very good players are going to get left off the West All-Star roster. Some agents aren't going to be happy about that.

Well, we'll see. I don't deny that all of this has a good chance of being true, but I'm hopeful and have confidence that Utah can fare better than people think. They got farther than I thought they would last year and I believe there's even more growth and potential in the tank to be better than people think they will.

It's not just fan-blinders either; few teams have improved over the course of the past few seasons like Utah has. Despite a whole lot of various obstacles, they keep going up and with these players still developing, this doesn't feel like a peak.

But again, anything can happen. I'm not denying this could all go the opposite way. All I know is that I'm just patiently but nervously waiting for Monday. I'm crossing all fingers and toes he stays. It's going to sting real hard if he goes. No hard feelings to him whatsoever if that's the case, we'll always love him here I think. But it'll still sting hard.

The Eastern All-Star team next year is gonna look... interesting to say the least.

So far, I'd say ...

West All-Stars

F - Kevin Durant; Golden State
F - Kawhi Leonard; San Antonio
F - DeMarcus Cousins; New Orleans
G - Russell Westbrook; Oklahoma City
G - Stephen Curry; Golden State
F - Anthony Davis; New Orleans
F - Jimmy Butler; Minnesota
F - Rudy Gobert; Utah
G - James Harden; Houston
G - Damian Lillard; Portland
F - Karl Anthony-Towns; Minnesota
F - Paul George; Oklahoma City

East All-Stars

F - Giannis Antetokounmpo; Milwaukee
F - LeBron James; Cleveland
F - Kevin Love; Cleveland
G - Isaiah Thomas; Boston
G - Kyrie Irving; Cleveland
F - Carmelo Anthony; New York
F - Andre Drummond; Detroit
F - Joel Embiid; Philadelphia
G - DeMar DeRozan; Toronto
G - Kyle Lowry; Toronto
G - John Wall; Washington
G - Kemba Walker; Charlotte

Of course there are still a few moves that can change this, but yeah ... time to Pro Bowlize the NBA ASG.

The NBA should adopt that NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft, but the players would never sign up for it because they're too much of a pvssy to possibly hurt their reputation by being picked last.  The same reason why the league's top stars don't do the Dunk Contest.

Not only is the East seemingly bereft of talent....the Hawks are trying to lose this coming season and they still might wind up in the playoffs.

Reports that Durant took much less than expected.

Two years;$53M. $25M for 2017-18 and a player option for 2018-19.

I hope he also got a path to ownership. Otherwise why leave that much on the table?

Durant cut nearly $10 million in order to keep the Warriors luxury tax levels lower and save ownership probably close to $50 million. That's essentially unheard of.

There's got to be more to this.

Everyone knows the July 1 free agency period start is a joke. If NBA owners are making actual contracts a joke in favor of post-playing considerations, the NBA and NBPA need to intervene. It's one thing to smartly manage your cap; it's quite another to just cheat.

Unless Kevin Durant really just wants to leave $10 million on the table because it feels good. But that's stupid.

this is about the equivalent of when Denver basically paid John Elway under the table to not go over the cap.

Keep in mind that 1st Team All NBA guys typically make more off the court than on, so this is the side job.

Why help management that much? I have zero idea.

Well, endorsement money doesn't count against the cap, so if he's making up most (or all, if not more) of that $10 million from endorsements, it's a smart business decision to sacrifice for a couple years if you make more money on the back end.  Durant may also recognize that championship windows do close at some point, so may as well collect as many rings as you can.

There's smoke about Carmelo Anthony accepting a buyout from the Knicks and is heading to Cleveland.
