Lakers give Kentavious Caldwell-Pope one year for $18M.

Seems like a slightly better contract than the $23M the Sixer's gave Redick due to age alone. KCP was one of the first wave of lottery picks who were 5* prep guys who willingly play for a sub-.500 college team, Georgia.

KCP is a Klutch Sports guy too, who lost a lot of money by not re-signing earlier with the Pistons.

Bill Simmons thinks this deal is, in part, a make nice to attract LeBron next year.

Oh good.  The blowouts will at least end a couple minutes quicker.

Granted, CBA rules and all, but if the NBA actually gave a crap, they'd make some changes as far as roster personnel goes.  Hard cap, get rid of all those exceptions and Bird Rights and such, bring back the territorial draft, adopt the NFL's "3 years removed from high school" requirement, and any player drafted in the first round has their rights owned in perpetuity by the team that drafted them.  The current system has basically made 6 parent clubs and 24 feeder teams.

If there's more hype about the following offseason than the upcoming season, the league is severely flawed.

Players union would allow exactly 0 of these changes you want.

I want a better NBA because this current version stanks.  Not stinks, but stanks.  As bad as their times were, the NHL at least had some semblance of competitive balance.  There's no intrigue right now, other than seeing four teams try to build a super-enough team from the 24 stiffs so they can try to compete with Golden State and LeBron.  Yawn, snore, *fart*.

The NBA's current model just isn't working.  There's no point in calling something a "salary cap" if you're allowed to spend more than that alleged limit.  And since basketball is probably the team sport that's most influenced by a dominant player, something needs to be done to put the likes of Sacramento, Minnesota, Indiana, and Charlotte on equal terms with Miami, Los Angeles, and the other big markets.  So, take measures to put teams on level footing.  Set up a hard cap....can't spend over whatever amount, no matter what.  Make the draft meaningful again....not only do you have three seasons of games and tape from those draft-eligible, your most important pick won't be able to leave in 4-5 years to chase a ring without getting huge assets in return.  Fix the first-round picks' annual salaries based on when they were picked and allow only half their salary count against the cap.  Now you can certainly trade any of your players that you drafted in the first round, but the team that acquires them doesn't get to keep that player in perpetual terms...they have to come to a contract agreement and their entire deal counts towards the cap.

How would you sell the NBA product to a fan this coming season if they aren't a fan of the Warriors, Spurs, Cavs, Celtics, Rockets, or Thunder?

The same way you sell the NFL product to the fans of historically :censored: fire franchises.  The same way you sell the MLB product to the historically moribund and butt lost.  This isn't a uniquely NBA problem (nor is the Hawks being unable to keep :censored: together two years removed from a season that was truly greater than the sum of their constituent parts.)

EDIT:  No, seriously your complaining seems to be along the lines of "Atlanta should have been insulated from the consequences of choosing Dwight Howard over Al Horford or trading Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver" and no, that's entirely on the Hawks.

It's by far harder to dig yourself out of a hole in the NBA than it is anywhere else.  That's why processes are needed if you're not one of the big dawgs and not absurdly lucky.

Here, I'm going to tell you a secret.  The only difference between Philadelphia and Boston is that the Celtics have an organizational culture that values winning and the Sixers don't.  Here's hoping somebody offers Simmons or Embiid a stupid poison pill contract in their first RFA year and blows up the Process dead in its tracks.

Three seasons of film hurts the drafted player since NCAA coaching will really F players up in terms of injury and just overoaching (see Tony and Randy Bennett, Ben Howland, Travis Ford, Bruce Weber, Sean Miller, Jim Boeheim)

The Warriors were garbage until they drafted Steph, Klay and Draymond. In that same time period (2009, 2911, 2012), the T-Wolves drafted Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio, Derrick Williams, and no one (because they traded Sam Cassell in 2005 for Marko Jaric and Lionel Chambers (???)). As we all know, the entire league passed on Draymond. Steph was the 7th pick; Klay the 11th. Players taken before Steph include Hasheem Thabeet and Tyreke Evans (also James Harden and Blake Griffin). Before Klay? Brandon Knight, Jimmer Fredette and Kemba Walker.

It's really easy to redo the drafts after they happen, but drafting is a skill that clearly some teams have and some teams don't. And when you draft well, you get the first opportunity to sign those players for longer deals. The Jazz could have locked Hayward up in 2014 through this upcoming season, but instead let Charlotte give him an RFA 4-year offer sheet.

I think we've learned that the most important thing NBA teams can do is draft well, nurture young talent, and lock them into deals as early as they can.

Durant to the Warriors was a glitch in the system. And Durant taking significantly less to re-sign in Golden State is another glitch. But even with that, Houston might end up CP3, Harden and Melo. OKC is better in 2017 than they were last year. Boston is stacked. Cleveland still has LeBron. San Antonio is San Antonio. Yeah, that's just a handful of teams, but last year was effectively just two (or three until Zaza).

Anyway, the NBA has a Warriors problem, but I don't think it's an existential problem. (Well, I did a month ago but I've lightened up.) People get older. People get injured. And so on. It'll be fine.

Poison pill contracts are stupid and only exist in broken systems. bird rights only exist in even worse systems. Trading for a retired players contract only exists in the absolute worst system. Some organizations are better than others, but the system is so stupid that even if you fire bad people and hire good ones, it still takes years to undo the bad stuff. This is a league that's rules mandate that teams pay douchebags 20-30m just because they have to. The only thing worse than the NBA cba is people defending it. It's the worst league.

What? The NBA guarantees contracts. It provides the best opportunity for players to find endorsements. It's by far the most socially progressive league (as socially progressive a pro sports league can be.)

The NFL is murdering its players. The NCAA is exploiting its players. MLB has dumb unwritten rules.

The NBA isn't perfect, but "the worst" is the the worst opinion.

*In which Bring Back the Vet complains about aspects of the CBA that at least meant Comcast that private equity bastard who now owns the team wouldn't just rake in revenue sharing money and field a team of losers from the streets of Camden during the height of the process*

I know it's just summer league and the Sixers weren't really playing any "quality" NBA players, but as bad as Lonzo was in his debut, he was just as outstanding tonight. Looking every bit like the special player he's been hyped up to be. Some of those outlet passes in the 1st quarter were sensational.

I agree with everything but the NFL, they have 3-4 times as many players, and only 2x the revenue. The percentage of money going to the players is about equal. Non guaranteed contracts is just a protection for the owners and allows GMs to be more flexible with how they handle players.

Make that three deals on the day for the Jazz:

Ekpe Udoh.

Another defensive signing. They seem to be dead serious about "first team to 80 points wins" all season long! :P

He apparently was a star in the Turkish League and is better developed now than he was a few seasons ago. We won't know until he's on the floor of course, but I hope that's the case. If he's as improved as people say he is, he'd be a great backup.
