You are such a homer. "Insulting the integrity of the Celtics," lol.

I'm sure the Celtics would have done the same thing if the roles were reversed.

It has nothing to do with that.

Cavs completely insulted the Celtics by claiming they weren't straightforward with IT's injury. When it's a fact they were. Everyone was aware of it. You think that does hurt the Celtics trade credibility?

Plus again, the Cavs were being greedy underhanded, :censored:s trying to get more in a trade everyone else already agreed they faced the Celtics with.

And no, the Celtics and most other teams would have been happy with what they got. They wouldn't have resorted to some manufactured bull :censored: "controversy" so they can get a wee bit me in a trade they already got too much for.

To put it simple, Dan Gilbert is a scumbag.

I don't get the snark. Teams have done way better with second-round picks in recent years, whether selecting players (Draymond and IT are the obvious examples) or trading them (see the Lakers this year). And the Cavs secured another asset with little leverage. I think that's pretty good, all things considered.

Teams have always been great at trading second round picks.  Hardly any teams actually want to use them except as trade assets.

Which number is higher?  The number of games Isaiah Thomas has played in the NBA, or the number of combined games the rest of picks #59 and #60 have played?

It's always been hard to trade players with any injury questions at all, and it's hard not to wonder if this will further chill that. If you're the selling team, even if you think you've been 100% clear about what you know, even if the injury happened on a very large stage... the buying team can say, "Well, our doctors found this other thing. Give us another pick." It's a bad precedent, made worse by the effect it has on the player in question. Thomas stood a pretty good shot at getting a max contract from somebody a year from now. Now it's hard to see how his value hasn't been dinged by the past week, and we have no idea whether that new perception is even valid.

Ok, those are two examples. Like, THE two examples. Who else?

The snark comes from the fact that the Cavs spent nearly a full week holding the Celtics hostage saying they wanted Jayson Tatum or/AND Jaylen Brown (PFFFFFT!!!!) in addition to what they got, and the ended up with (likely) a late second round pick three years from now which, let's be real here, isn't going to amount to much of anything. And add that to the absolute dumpster fire of an off season they've had and it just continues to show the trend of a terribly run organization. Dan Gilbert is about to scare off probably the second greatest player of all time (who's home grown to boot) TWICE due to the complete and total discombobulation of his decisions.

Here's a 2011 list of great second-round draft picks: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/914567-50-greatest-second-round-nba-draft-picks-of-all-time/

Steve Kerr, Marc Gasol, Stephen Jackson, Carlos Boozer, Gilbert Arenas, Manu Ginobli, etc. Other more recent examples include Nikola Jokic, Jordan Clarkson, Montrezl Harrell, Willy Hernangomez, Patrick McCaw and 2016 rookie of the year Malcolm Brogdon. The list of second round picks who haven't ever played is longer, but there's value to be had in the second round.

I don't disagree that Gilbert is garbage, but I think the Cavs did well with the Irving trade, especially by getting more after the original agreement. And "holding hostage" is more than just a little extreme; the Celtics could totally have walked away.

2nd rd picks are assets. Just ask Sam Hinkie.

A name @DG_Now didn't bring up that was also a 2nd round pick is Norman Powell, who has also looked really good. The 2nd round is becoming a sleeper round, taking chances on older players or more relative unknowns, which is only making the NBA stronger.... not to mention that player development is also getting stronger thanks to the league actually giving a :censored: about the G-League & working on making it a proper minor-league system, which is why Two-Way contracts are being added to the NBA. The league is only getting better, people are getting smarter & we'll probably see more 2nd round gems in the league in the next few years.

You two are giving a few teams that actually use second round picks way too much credit.  Half of the recent guys DG mentioned, I've never even heard of....and I follow enough of the NBA to call myself competent.  Some of those names, I thought were made up.  Hernangomez?  Montrezl?

Most teams view the second round of the draft as a waste, and rightfully so....rarely do any of them actually amount to something worth a damn.  If they couldn't find a sucker to take them off their hands, they either trade them away for "cash considerations" (i.e. selling their draft pick), draft a European that has no intentions of ever coming stateside, or just take a guy to be their backup's backup.  Every team does need those couple guys that sit at the end of the bench and make 3-point glasses with their hands.

I'm not seeing the shrewdness of Cleveland holding out for what will likely be a late 2nd round pick.  Boston would have given that away for a pack of Klondike bars.

I don't know what to tell you. Sorry nuance isn't your thing. Maybe watch more basketball.

Teams have 11 players. Most teams keep most of their rosters year over year. There's only so much room in the league for players. But if you hit on a second round guy, you get a great value on good talent for a few years. Again, not sure the need for the snark. If you can get IT, Zizic, Crowder, the BKN pick or those four plus a second rounder, no matter the year, why not take the latter?

Also, if you think the Celtics are out their just giving away assets, you haven't been paying attention to Danny Ainge over the past couple of years.

Teams have 15 players, and up to 13 active on the game day rosters.  And most teams still would rather have nothing to do with second round picks.

Rosters can now be 17 as teams can have two players with "two-way contracts", but can spend just 45 days on the NBA side.

IT has some real stuff to say about the Celtics, Cavs, and the trade.  It's a very interesting read.
