I don't understand what one has to do with the other. Is there a viable concern that the NHL taking those colors would be somehow usurping a future NBA team? They probably are looking for colours that they can say is their own that can easily be identifiable as theirs in a pretty crowded market. They still could go with a green/red combo or green/silver.
