There are five Sockeye on the ice at the same time, therefore they're countable and can be referred to as the Sockeyes. Simple!

I’m disappointed in the colors, would’ve preferred a color besides red to be the primary. I know Sockeyes are red, but please emphasize the sea foam. Red is so overused

Curious as to why everyone is jumping on Sockeyes but no one is even mentioning Steelheads.

I can definitely see the team going with a bright pinkish-red. Adidas hockey is big on the bright reds and oranges. I'm here for it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I hear Steelheads, I think minor league: AHL, WHL, etc. Can't say why, but that's the impression it gives me.

They think Sockeye sounds like "sock 'em in the eye", which is very forced and cringeworthy. Other than that, it's just another species of salmon you find at the grocery store. Nothing great about that name at all.

Not really, no. What would be your preferred name? Something “fierce” and “intimidating?”

I can't seem to find any solid answers on whether the word "sockeye" is both plural and singular, like deer. If it is, would the team just be "Seattle Sockeye"? If so, it's an inelegant name for the awkwardness.

If the plural form is "sockeye", then that should be the name of the team.  (And this would avoid the inevitable act on the part of rival fans of transforming "Sockeyes" into "Suckass".)

I can only speak for myself having lived in Seattle for 30 years, but there does seem to be a pride around the salmon here. Not just another fish.

Colors like the Whipsnakes in the new PLL would be cool

I like the salmon and forest green, I think a slightly brighter shade of seafoam versus the almost teal here?

Nevermind that actually looks pretty seafoamy on second glance?

I mean, there IS an ECHL team in Boise called that. So I understand. Personally, I prefer it to Sockeyes, though.

I mean, Steelheads could have a fighting connotation too. Being super tough because they have a steel head. It's also WA's state fish and isn't copyrighted by a romance novelist.

If they go with a native salmon species, Seattle King Salmon has a nice ring it. King Salmon (Chinook) is the largest of the salmon species, and it's also a cool tie in with King County. It turns red during spawning like the Sockeye, for those who want to include red in the color scheme.

I would reverse it and go with Salmon Kings.  There use to be a ECHL team in Victoria that went by that name.

The Los Angeles Kings exist so the above just isn’t happening.

Salmon Kings or King Salmon? I think King Salmon sounds different enough from Kings.

It also sounds ridiculous, just go with Chinooks, sounds pretty good tbh

I know that the league received a lot of blowback over the generous expansion draft terms that were extended to the Vegas Golden Knights, but making NHL Seattle play shorthanded every shift seems like an overreaction.
