Why does it sound ridiculous to you? Chinook would work too though.

Seattle King Salmon sounds weirdly singular, and not like Sockeye. It sounds like one king salmon, king salmons also sounds weird. And it sounds extremely minor league, it sounds like a joke, salmon Kings is better but still, sounds like a actual king named salmon or a king of the salmon.

So you're saying it sound ridiculous because salmon sounds singular, and sounds even more singular than sockeye? I think most people familiar with the word salmon know that the plural is also salmon. "Salmon Kings" was brought up by someone else.

Salmon Kings or King Salmon? I think King Salmon sounds different enough from Kings.

The owner of the Golden Knights revealed that his initial preference- the Black Knights- got resistance from the NHL because it got too close to the name “Blackhawks” for their liking.

If that’s the standard the NHL is working with? Then nothing involving the name “Kings” or “King” is going to work.

It was a hawk theme Vegas was after.

I know that the league received a lot of blowback over the generous expansion draft terms that were extended to the Vegas Golden Knights, but making NHL Seattle play shorthanded every shift seems like an overreaction.

So is it five PLUS the goalie?!

God, I know so little about hockey 😳

Yeah, you don't count the goalie in strength, just skaters. Hence, "five-on-three," not "six-on-four," and "six-on-five" when it's still six players per side.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Too bad they’ll fumble the whole thing and go with Kraken or Sasquatch bc it’s “cool and trendy”

I kind of doubt it. While it's possible, these colors just scream Sockeyes or Chinooks

The fact that this is even something we have to think about makes this branding a challenge. Not insurmountable, but awkward.

Or maybe it's just me. I wouldn't argue that.

Eh, I see an argument for awkward, but it's just a wording issue. There's not appropriation, conflicting branding, or kitschy angle to it. Calling it a challenge feels like a bit of a stretch.

The Los Angeles Kings exist so the above just isn’t happening.

Ding, ding, ding. A shiny penny for the lad.

All in all, Sockeyes (although Chinooks is growing on me) is serviceable. More importantly, it seems like something that will resonate with the locals. Just like with Nashville's gold bent or Carolina's new double flag alternate, it can be a hit with the local fans while still not landing with the general public. It's an angle some people don't give enough creedence, in these discussions. The bottom line is appealing to the people you're targeting with your merch. Brandings that pull a '91 Sharks and transcend the local market are the exception, and usually happen by accident.

What does Chinooks mean in the context of Seattle/PNW? And where did the name come from in this thread, is it something they’re considering?

Chinooks mean something here in the Calgary/Southern Alberta area and there’s a youth soccer organization here called Chinooks.

The Chinook are an indigenous tribe from the pacific northwest.

So long as the branding made it clear that the name referred to salmon, and they avoided tribal imagery completely, I don't think there would be any issue. I could completely understand why a member of their management might err on the side of caution and say no, altogether, in light of recent headaches and woes experienced by other franchises.

I have to admit i’ve never heard the word sockeyes before all this discussion.

Similarly, I have to admit that I didn't know the word "marlin" before the N.L. expansion team was named. I made it to 26 years old without having heard of the fish. More surprising is that I somehow had not heard the name of the minor league team that went by that nickname until the late 1980s, even though I knew rather a lot about minor league baseball.
