These are certainly an upgrade, but drop the silver and remove the strokes around the numerals and they're outstanding.

One thing I've noticed and am now torn on is how nice the numerals on the backs of the jerseys look with the strokes. I think I'd now rather see both the wordmarks and numerals with consistent strokes rather than both without any strokes.

Not much of a change, really. I've always liked the Blazers look so I'm cool with it.

ROFF @truepg

Jokes aside I like the updated version of their uniform. Was hoping they went with the Rip city template

^^^^ this template ^^^^

Blazers - home

Portland - road

Ripcity - alt (red or silver)

...But the end result I can live with. Good job Portland.

I disagree, I think they're a definite upgrade. The old italic font with the awkward outline/dropshadow was getting really dated, and the updated wordmarks and number font look really sharp IMO.

I didn't care for the dropshadow, but I've always been a sucker for italics. The new font is okay, but to me it doesn't have as much character as the old font did. But like I said, I still think they're pretty sharp.

For the red jerseys, I assume they're going to have "RIP CITY" on them? I don't think I've ever seen them wear red at any point in their history so I'm looking forward to their reveal.

I assume you mean that you've never personally seen them wearing red? Because if not, I can assure you that red uniforms are nothing new for them:

And some insight into the design process and the choices that were made:

Interesting bit from the very end. Haven't heard much about merchandise costs:

The new Nike “Association” and “Icon” editions will be available at retail starting at the end of September and will be significantly less expensive than the previous adidas authentic jerseys.

I like the design changes overall, though I wish they had dropped the silver. Portland's look had gotten way too cluttered these past few years. The one thing that will drive me bonkers, though, is that the shorts stripe no longer goes all the way up on the waistband, creating a break between it and the sash, where they previously flowed into each other.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

The thing with this set is just that it's not a new uni, it's the same design with just slight modifications that - I'm not the one to usually say this - will go unnoticed by the Average Joe.

BTW, I'm a supporter of unmatching wordmarks and numbers. The contrast works as great here as it does on the Hornets' and Hawks' jerseys.

hasn't that been policy for a very long time?  What's new?

It was for a period of time, but then stopped being policy at some point. I think the goal was to avoid, like, eight or nine NBA-related threads from cluttering the front page of Sports Logos.

Anyway, this is a fine update from Portland. Nothing special, but nothing offensive.

If anything, I would've preferred the numbers to be single-colored to match the wordmarks. I don't mind only the numbers having outlines though, mainly because I think the outlines would've muddled up the wordmarks a bit too much.

I like the simplicity of the new wordmarks, but the refinement and craftsmanship is not there, from the crossbar that’s pushed way up into the A to the atrocious T that somehow ruined the 7 as well.

i think going single color on the old wordmarks would have come across much nicer, though there are some head scratching elements thstt would have to be removed (serifs on a round O and S?!). I’m actually surprised the focus groups killed italics because it seems like the kind of low-hanging visual jazz that non-design people universally love. Over the years, it definitely became a Blazers hallmark for me. I like the way it implies movement, which is appropriate for their team name, and that it stylistically matches the italic logo.

I agree on the numbers, though. The cleanliness of no trim looks nice with their bold jersey stripes. The red trim muddies up the front number on the white jersey real bad. They need a more open typeface to pull it off at that scale. It’s not much of an issue on the black jersey because the red reces into the black and the white stands out.

I think what you’re talking about is slightly different. Opposite colors like the Hornets do typically look great and can make no-trim typography a little more interesting. Reversing the fill and outline can be a functional choice, like how the hawks pop their numbers with a green fill. I don’t prefer that approach, but at least it appears purposeful. Even when the numbers have trim, and the wordmark doesn’t, it still works for me if the wordmark is the same color as the number trim, because the relationship of the trim color touching the background color is maintained, and the small lettering typically has a good scale relationship with the number trim (looks like the Cavs are taking this approach on their new wine jersey).

What I can't stand is a number with trim paired with a wordmark that is the fill color of the number, but with no trim, or vice versa, I suppose. One always looks like an unfinished version of the other, like they just forgot to add the trim to the wordmark. That’s why what the Blazers have done here is bothering people.

Agree to disagree then. Works just fine to me here.

I don't really view this as a change, which is both good and bad.

Good because the Trailblazers have one of the more timeless uniforms and logos in basketball, and that shouldn't be sacrificed on the behest of Phil Knight wanting to make his homestate team look like a kaleidoscope of garbage for the sake of challenging the design status quo by putting the Blazers in some overly ambitious trash-wrap.

Lateral move, as someone said, with a TON of room for improvement, but emerging safely from a Nike rebrand, especially as an Oregon franchise, is a victory unto itself.

I'm surprised that the reaction has been so positive. I find this to be an overly conservative refresh with a few design flaws. Portland, and its fans, and the franchise have so much character and somehow this design lacks any real soul.

- the colorization of several key features makes no sense to me. The team/city name is one color, the numerals are two colors, and the sash is three colors. As a result, I think it looks and feels incohesive -- it's comprised of distinct, unconnected elements. Simply outlining BLAZERS in red to match the numbers would help a lot.

- the gray accent now feels completely out of place. Under the old visual scheme, the gray was a necessary (if unwelcome) addition to provide dimensionality. Now that the logo and word mark are flat, it's simply unnecessary and isn't reflected anywhere else in the visual package besides on the jersey striping. The gray has always been unloved by Blazers fans -- I'm not sure why Nike didn't just ditch it.

- the wordmark looks very similar to the Pistons', no? Nothing about it feels very Trail Blazers to me, particularly given that there's a really distinctive typographical heritage to draw on.

- nobody (NOBODY) think the Blazers 90s-era bold-faced, all-caps identity was their best look. But, perhaps betraying its designers' youth a bit, it seems to have been where Nike have looked for inspiration for the logo and word mark. Neither really capture Portland's particular whimsy, nor the nostalgia embedded in previous looks. Echoing the team's 70s/80s lowercase lettering would have felt much more "Portland" in my opinion.

- I thought Nike would try and get "TRAIL BLAZERS" onto the jersey in some way. If I'm recalling correctly, the team's full name have never appeared on its jerseys. Without basis, I predicted Nike would take a stab at this. I'm sorry they haven't.
