The Pointless Realignment Outpost

For those about to freak out over a possible 7-9 or 6-10 playoff team from the NFC West, I propose the return to 3 divisions to a conference.

AFC East

Buffalo

Indianapolis

Miami

New England

N.Y. Jets

AFC Central

Baltimore

Cincinnati

Cleveland

Jacksonville

Pittsburgh

Tennessee

AFC West

Denver

Houston

Kansas City

Oakland

San Diego

NFC East

Atlanta

Carolina

Dallas

N.Y. Giants

Philadelphia

Washington

NFC Central

Chicago

Detroit

Green Bay

Minnesota

Tampa Bay

NFC West

Arizona

New Orleans

St. Louis

San Francisco

Seattle

Fixed it.

Okay, a much needed geographically return to divisional alignment before 2002.

Fixed again.

NFL: 2 preseason games, 18 regular. 14 divisional games, 4 games against half of another division, rotated over a 6-year period. Playoffs could be top 2, 3 or 4 in each division.

4 divisions of 8:

West: Seahawks, Niners, Raiders, Chargers, Cards, Broncos, Texans, Cowboys.

South: Saints, Jags, Bucs, Fins, Falcons, Panthers, Rams, Chiefs.

North: Bears, Vikes, Lions, Pack, Bengals, Browns, Colts, Titans.

East: Pats, Jets, Giants, Bills, Eagles, Steelers, Skins, Ravens.

This I actually kinda like a little bit sort of.

I like the intimacy that 4-team divisions provide for (it allows you to channel your "hate" toward three teams, so they each get a lot of it, rather than dividing your hate between 7) but I don't like that there are only 6 division games, and you could win your division without winning a single division game.

I've thought about if there could actually be three division games per team under the current format, but if the sched expands to 18 games, that's still only 50% of your games being in the division. I like that this makes for around 75% of your schedule within the division.

Wild cards could be a problem, as there are no intra-conference games anymore, and many teams won't have common opponents. I guess you could simply do top three per division, or just keep it as is but have 8 wild cards? The issue is that this format really devalues winning the division.

Wouldn't really make much sense to go to uneven divisions when you have enough teams to make them evened out divisions (and no its not the same thing for MLB).

Because of what happened in Minnesota, I thought I'd do this. Vikings are moved to Los Angeles.

4 divisions of 8:

West: Vikings, Seahawks, Niners, Raiders, Chargers, Cards, Texans, Cowboys.

South: Saints, Jags, Bucs, Fins, Falcons, Panthers, Rams, Chiefs.

North: Bears, Broncos, Lions, Pack, Bengals, Browns, Colts, Titans.

East: Pats, Jets, Giants, Bills, Eagles, Steelers, Skins, Ravens.

I probably completely missed a team that is closer to the north region than Denver actually is. Oh well.

With a team that cold have a losing record getting into the playoffs (Seattle), the idea of going back to 3-division conferences doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Here's how I would handle it, though--3 divisions in both conferences, 2 with 5 teams, one with 6 teams, each. Teams essentially changing divisions are in bold (as I'd be using "base divisions," such as the NFC East or the AFC North; the AFC and NFC Souths are dissolved).

National Football League

American Football Conference

AFC East (Based off of currenct AFC East)

--Buffalo

--Indianapolis (from AFC South)

--Jacksonville (from AFC South)

--Miami

--New England

--New York Jets

AFC Central (Basd off of current AFC North)

--Baltimore

--Cincinnatti

--Cleveland

--Pittsburgh

--Tennessee (From AFC South)

AFC West

--Denver

--Houston (from AFC South)

--Kansas City

--Oakland

--San Diego

National Football Conference

NFC East

--Carolina (from NFC South)

--Dallas

--New York Giants

--Philadelphia

--Washington

NFC Central (based off of NFC North)

--Chicago

--Detroit

--Green Bay

--Minnesota

--Tampa Bay (from NFC South)

NFC West

--Arizona

--Atlanta (from NFC South)

--New Orleans (from NFC South)

--St. Louis

--San Francisco

--Seattle

Here, I wouldn't want to break up the Titans/Texans or the Panthers/Buccaneers rivalries, but I do like returning the Colts to the AFC East and moving the Jaguars there, where they'd be in the same division as the nearby Dolphins and would remain division rivals to the Colts.

While not making a whole lot of sense, it would seem best to send the Falcons and Saints back to the NFC West, where they were before 2002.

The Texans going to the AFC West would give a closer divisional team to the Chiefs.

The Panthers would be an NFC East team if the Cowboys weren't rivals with the Eagles, Giants, and Redskins, so I figure that they'd do best there.

Here's another NFC scenario:

National Football Conference

NFC East

--Carolina (from NFC South)

--Dallas

--New York Giants

--Philadelphia

--Tampa Bay (from NFC South)

--Washington

NFC Central (based off of NFC North)

--Chicago

--Detroit

--Green Bay

--Minnesota

--St. Louis (from NFC West)

NFC West

--Arizona

--Atlanta (from NFC South)

--New Orleans (from NFC South)

--San Francisco

--Seattle

The main reason for this is that the NFC Central would be an excellent division, regionally speaking; the only problem here is that the NFC West would stretch all the way from Seattle to Atlanta with no team inbetween (St. Louis). Tampa Bay would remain in the same division as Carolina here. Which scenario is better?

The Clippers are 15th in attendance in the whole NBA right now. That's better than the Nuggets, Pistons, Rockets, Raptors, Bucks, Hawks, Sixers, and Nets, all of whom you're keeping around in your ideal NBA. I'm all for contracting some teams, but let's be realistic - the Clippers are doing surprisingly well at the box office for a team that has always been the second team in their market, with a dreadful history to boot.

I think he like LeBron) took the last 8 teams CURRENTLY with the worst records and contracted them, as if that's the basis for such an action. He didn't seem to figure in attendance, revenue or overall financial stability of the the franchises he dropped.

That and we merge with America East, the Ivy League (for non-revenue, they don't want to get rid of their basketball regular season auto-bid. Or academics considering 54th place Syracuse still has the top football-school academics in this scenario.) MAAC, MAC and NEC, Patriot League, and whatever other Northeastern conferences were not mentioned. But not Binghamton. They're not invited :P

And DePaul would still finish last. UMBC will edge them in a thrilling "really really last chance play-in" game for the BET :P
