The Pointless Realignment Outpost

Ok.

Considering how stacked the B1G is already, if they decide to go out and get 4 more schools with other conferences getting 12-16, SOME of these "Small timers" could get picked up just as leftovers. I'm pretty sure we'll see much more addition to FBS than subtraction. Especially now.

Maybe, although considering how Buffalo's 1 moment of football glory was an 8-6 season highlighted by Turner Gill not being intimidated by Brady Hoke's pointing, I suspect most leagues will look elsewhere.

Ok, ladies and gentlemen, I am here to officially announce my genius realignment plan for the NHL. No teams are relocated, no teams are added or deleted, and only three (that's right, THREE) teams have to move divisions. The intention of this genius realignment plan is to move the Jets out of the Southeast, which makes absolutely zero sense. Well, folks, here it is. Teams changing divisions are in caps.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic

New Jersey

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Philadelphia

Pittsburgh

Northeast

Boston

Buffalo

Montreal

Ottawa

Toronto

Southeast

Carolina

Florida

NASHVILLE

Tampa Bay

Washington

Western Conference

Central

Chicago

Columbus

Detroit

MINNESOTA

St. Louis

Northwest

Calgary

Colorado

Edmonton

Vancouver

WINNIPEG

Pacific

Anaheim

Dallas

Los Angeles

Phoenix

San Jose

Well, there it is. Have at it, boys.

Not a realignment of teams, but of the schedule. Under the impression that the current 6-division, 5-team-per structure stays put, I would like to address the breakdown of games. This is to allow every team to see every other team at least once in their own building, as well as once away, because of the likely increase in TV exposure and ticket sales that the high-demand teams might bring to some of the lower-demand teams. The Columbus/Phoenix/Islanders crowds would be guaranteed to see Washington, Pittsburgh, Detroit etc. at least once in their building every season. It will also allow for the Original Six matchups to happen every season for all 6 of those teams, which I think is a good idea.

The question here is if the MAC will let a school the size of Penn State in the MAC considering the largest school by enrollment in the MAC right now is Akron with 29,251 students. Penn State has an enrollment of 95,883 students (if you count all the campuses). I also think Penn State is too prestigious to join the MAC. And would the MAC even let them in because of the scandal? I think Penn State's best bet is to join the Independents.

Why the hell would Penn State leave the Big Ten for the MAC anyway?

They wouldn't leave voluntarily.... but when the Sandusky scandal inevitably gets even deeper throughout this season, who says the Big Ten will want to keep them around?

I dunno, the TV contracts and the lack of an adequate replacement for starters. And no, neither Pitt nor Notre Dame count as adequate replacements.

Charlotte and San Antonio.... just like I'm thinking.

As far as your re-alignment goes, it would be far better if Houston stayed put. (I really hate having BOTH Texas teams in the same league.)

Here's a cool look at what would have happened if the Pacific Coast League had moved past Open league classification in the 1950s and become the third major league before the Dodgers and Giants could leave New York. Do you think it would have been better this way?

National League

Brooklyn Dodgers

Atlanta Braves

New York Giants

Philadelphia Phillies

Pittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati Reds

Chicago Cubs

St. Louis Cardinals

American League

Baltimore Orioles

Boston Red Sox

New York Yankees

Kansas City Athletics

Cleveland Indians

Detroit Tigers

Chicago White Sox

Minnesota Twins

Pacific Coast League

Hollywood Stars

Los Angeles Angels

San Diego Padres

Sacramento Solons

Oakland Oaks

San Francisco Seals

Portland Beavers

Seattle Rainiers

Central League

Houston Astros

Colorado Rockies

Miami Marlins

Milwaukee Brewers

Texas Rangers

Toronto Blue Jays

I have never liked that the Soo Greyhounds are in a different division than the Sudbury Wolves, so...

myohl.png

Teams will play an unbalanced schedule, with a home-and-away against the 15 non-divisional teams (30), and ten games each against divisional rivals(40), for a 70-game schedule, two more than the current 68-game one. This geographic arrangement should (in theory) cut down on travel costs, although Sudbury and the Soo will likely have the most travel whatever division they get placed in.The top 4 teams in each division would make the playoffs.

I also worked out the breakdown of the season and playoff schedules, which can be seen here. I didn't really fit in an OHL All-Star Game, but I think it could be fit in one of the off-weeks I put into the schedule, or the time between the end of the OHL Final and Memorial Cup.

It feels like Brampton is out of place now, separated from the other GTA teams, but I suppose there isn't much you could do about it.

In the actual alignment of the OHL, Owen Sound is also definitely in the wrong division. There is no reason whatsoever that they should be in the Midwest while Niagara is in the Central.

Having Sudbury and the Soo so much further north than the other 18 teams makes any alignment unfair for some teams. That's what we get for living in Northern Ontario. But that's also why I think those two teams should at least be in the same division with each other. Comparatively, the 307 km between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie is shorter than any other trip those two teams have to take.
