The Pointless Realignment Outpost

My reason for it is attendance figures. I don't have a problem with either of the venues - I just wanted a more centralized location, and record setting attendance. Pretty sure you could get a full Penn State for two consecutive matches there - one Flyers hosting Pens and the other Pens hosting Caps - since those are the teams (Pens/Caps) that Gary Bettman seems to want to milk the most. Then Philly travels to DC.

or... they could always bring back the vet.

I see what you did there...

If the NHL expanded into 32 teams, they should go with 8 divisions like the NFL. Here's a mockup of what it could look like:

Pacific

  • Anaheim Ducks
  • Los Angeles Kings
  • San Jose Sharks
  • Seattle Roast (expansion)

Mountain

  • Colorado Avalanche
  • Dallas Stars
  • Minnesota Wild
  • Utah Yeti (formerly Florida)

Canada West

  • Calgary Flames
  • Edmonton Oilers
  • Vancouver Canucks
  • Winnipeg Jets

Central

  • Chicago Blackhawks
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Milwaukee Marvels (formerly Nashville)
  • St. Louis Blues

Canada East

  • Montreal Canadiens
  • Ottawa Senators
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Quebec Nordiques (formerly Phoenix)

New England

  • Boston Bruins
  • Brookyln Islanders
  • Buffalo Sabres
  • New York Rangers

Northeast

  • Indianapolis Motors (expansion)
  • Cleveland Barons (formerly Columbus)
  • Philadelphia Flyers
  • Pittsburgh Penguins

Atlantic

  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • New Jersey Devils
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Washington Capitals

I Love You!

What the heck, Summitt sounds like a great name.

EDIT: Done. I also change Seattle to the Pilots, Nashville to Indiana, and then Columbus to Cincinatti.

Dear God. What is wrong with the AHL? How can you possibly put a team on the East Coast in the West Division, when nearly half the league is west of Carolina?

My fix. I emailed it to them as well.

FWIW, the division with Iowa in it is the Midwest Division in their realignment, and in mine Iowa would be in the West Division, as opposed to the South. So it *almost* works...except for the Carolina bit.

I have no confirmation to back this up, but I suspect Charlotte's status as a significant air hub played a role in them landing in "the flyover division."

Eight games against a single team is too much, especially when it's only two teams getting that treatment. 20% of our schedule consisting of the Wilds and Jets suggests the existence of a God who doesn't love me.

For argument's sake, back in the O6 era, even a 50-game season saw teams playing all others 10+ times each. It's not unprecedented.

But when you have 30 teams as opposed to 6....

Besides, what kind of sick :censored: honestly wants to see Columbus and Nashville play 8 times a season?

Offhand, I'd say a Columbus or Nashville hockey fan...anyway, any number of proposals by me or anyone else could have been better than the plan the GDNHL actually adopted. But that's what this thread is for, right?

Bold means that team was actually relocated, but in this scenario, stayed

Italics means franchise that would expand in both scenarios

Underline means expansion that never happened in real life, but did in this scenario.

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I absolutely think the new realignment Bettman has approved, is God awful. What I would have done instead (with the current teams in place, no relocation), is this. In the Western Conference and Eastern Conference, it could be split into North and South Divisions. Because there would only two divisions with a conference of 15 teams, obviously one division would have 8 and the other would have 7. I think that's fine, and the way I would set things up would be like this. Western Conference; North Division (Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings), South Division (San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues). The Eastern Conference; North Division (Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders and New York Rangers). South Division (Columbus Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers). Any people agree with this concept? The division winners would rank #1 and #2 seed in the respected conference, with 8 teams in each 15 team conference advancing to the post-season. This way, things don't change too much and it stays more geographically accurate.

A reason (not the main reason) for needing the realignment was the time zone factor and the TV ratings that go along with it. This makes it worse than it was. You'd have teams in 3 different time zones in the same division.

Your idea in the East isn't as bad, but it does break up some rivals. You have the New Yorks and Pittsburgh separate from Jersey and Philly. Not a major deal, but it's a factor.

I'm ok with the current alignment but Metropolitan is a brutal division name.

A 36-team NHL? Are you being serious. Honestly the NFL is about the only league that could pull off 36 teams. If the NBA went to 5 divisions of 6 and somehow found a way to make a 6-team European division work, then maybe. But definitely not the NHL. Not to mention, a team in Des Moines? Four teams in the Toronto-Buffalo area?
