The Pointless Realignment Outpost

What's the point of swapping Louisville and South Carolina? Why would SC leave the SEC?

To be fair, most of the alignments in hear makes less sense than that.

South Carolina was a former ACC member (from 1953-1971) plus it makes it easier to pair them with their state rival Clemson.

The alignments now don't make any more sense than some of these (WVU is in the same conference as OU?). I mean i see there may be a lack of tradition but most of these are just a matter of putting schools in conferences based on geography not by tradition necessarily and definitely not by superficial reasonings (money, ratings, etc).

College sports as we know them are just about dead. The lid is off on all the corruption that taints just about every major program and every decision that the schools or the NCAA make is only about money, money, and more money. We'll have three 16+ team super-conferences sooner rather than later, killing much of the regional flair and traditional rivalries that make college sports unique and showing the door to any school that doesn't bring money to the table in the process. Pretty soon the smaller schools are going to have to consider forming their own sanctioning body to keep the true spirit of college sports alive because the NCAA will only get worse in it's excess from here

Cool alignment buzzcut. It would be awesome to see Seattle and Vancouver back and re-brand themselves. Plus, I would gladly pay to see a team from Puerto Rico to be in the NBA! But putting a bit aside, I have a re-alignment of my own:

1. - Eastern Conference:

1.1. - Northeast Division:

Boston Celtics

Brooklyn Nets

New York Knicks

Toronto Raptors

1.2. - Atlantic Division:

Cleveland Cavaliers

Detroit Pistons

Philadelphia 76ers

Washington Wizards

1.3. - Southeast Division:

Atlanta Hawks

Miami Heat

Orlando Magic

Charlotte Hornets

1.4. - Central Division:

Chicago Bulls

Indiana Pacers

Vancouver Polar Kodiaks

2.3. - Midwest Division:

Sacramento Kings

Lemme know your thoughts of this version.

jlog3000's NBA Realignment plan makes sense.

@JH42XCC - Thanks. :) I have the possible schedule format based on my realignment, which I'll post it eventually.

Except for the fact that he has two teams named 'Grizzlies'. Easy fix though

@mr.nascar13 - Oops, my bad on that. :P lol But already did fix it by turning the Vancouver one into a "blank" nickname team.

As promised, the schedule formats based on my NBA realignment, subdivided into two variations

Schedule Format V-1.0 (84 total games):

Conference play; Division play; Intra-Section play: Each team will play four times – two home, two away – for a total of 12 Intra-Division Intra-Section games (3 * 4 = 12).

Conference play; Division play; Out-of-Section play: Each team will play all four teams four times – two home, two away – for a total of 16 Intra-Division Out-of-Section games (4 * 4 = 16).

Conference play; Out-of-Division play: Each team will play all eight teams three times for a total of 24 Out-of-Division games (8 * 3 = 24). Of those eight teams, will face four of them twice on home and once on road, while face other four of them once on home and twice on road. Process rotates in a two-year basis.

Out-of-Conference play: Each team will play all 16 teams twice – one home, one away – for a total of 32 Out-of-Conference games (16 * 2 = 32).

Schedule Format V-2.0 (82 total games):

Conference play; Division play; Intra-Section play: Each team will play six times – three home, three away – for a total of 18 Intra-Division Intra-Section games (3 * 6 = 18).

Conference play; Division play; Out-of-Section play: Each team will play all four teams four times – two home, two away – for a total of 16 Intra-Division Out-of-Section games (4 * 4 = 16).

Conference play; Out-of-Division play: Each team will play all eight teams twice – one home, one away – for a total of 16 Out-of-Division games (8 * 2 = 16).

Out-of-Conference play: Each team will play all 16 teams twice – one home, one away – for a total of 32 Out-of-Conference games (16 * 2 = 32).

Oh, I also made a little tweak with the NFL realignment, only for schedule format purposes:

1. – AFC:

1.1. – North-East Division:

1.1.1. – North Section:

Baltimore Ravens

Cincinnati Bengals

Cleveland Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers

1.1.2. – East Section:

Buffalo Bills

Miami Dolphins

New England Patriots

New York Jets

1.2. – South-West Division:

1.2.1. – South Section:

Houston Texans

Indianapolis Colts

Jacksonville Jaguars

Tennessee Titans

1.2.2. – West Section:

Denver Broncos

Kansas City Chiefs

Oakland Raiders

San Diego Chargers

2 – NFC:

2.1. – North-West Division:

2.1.1. – North Section:

Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers

Minnesota Vikings

2.1.2. – West Section:

Arizona Cardinals

St. Louis Rams

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

2.2. – South-East Division:

2.2.1. – South Section:

Atlanta Falcons

Carolina Panthers

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2.2.2. – East Section:

Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants

Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Redskins

Schedule Format (18 total games):

a.) Conference play; Division play; Intra-Section play: Each team will play the other three teams twice: – 3 home, 3 away – for a total of 6 Intra-Division Intra-Section games (3 * 2 = 6).

b.) Conference play; Division play; Out-of-Section play: Each team will play all four teams once: – home-and-home basis per every two years – for a total of 4 Intra-Division Out-of-Section games (4 * 1 = 4).

c.) Conference play; Out-of-Division play: Each team will play all four teams of a certain section from another division once per every two years: – home-and-home basis per every four years – for a total of 4 Out-of-Division games (4 * 1 = 4).

d.) Out-of-Conference play: Each team will play all four teams of a certain section from another conference once per every four years: – home-and-home basis per every eight years – for a total of 4 Out-of-Conference games (4 * 1 = 4).

So you basically went with an NFL alignment for the NBA. Cool idea.

Basically, yes Scruggy. So I thank you. I was about to make a tweak version soon. For now, I just added the schedule formats based on the NFL-style NBA alignment.

Besides, I also posted my custom NFL alignment (in a tweak-like version) to convert the 4 divisions into sections or pods, grouped into two divisions; with a schedule format to remove the "two games of facing same-place teams from other divisions." Instead, I used my own schedule format in case that the NFL plans to expand upto 18 games.

jlog,

Not to critique your idea in minute detail, but wouldn't Minnesota be a better fit than Memphis in the East. The alignment would look better if it looked like this:

Central Division

Chicago

Indiana

Milwaukee

Minnesota

Midwest Division

Dallas

Denver

Oklahoma City

Phoenix

Southwest Division

Houston

Memphis

New Orleans

San Antonio

Alright, with all the NBA re-alignments going around, I had to make one for myself.

Eastern Conference:

Atlantic:

Boston Celtics

Brooklyn Nets

*Montreal Mounties

New York Knicks

Philadelphia 76ers

Toronto Raptors

Central:

Chicago Bulls

Cleveland Cavaliers

Detroit Pistons

Indiana Pacers

Milwaukee Bucks

*Pittsburgh Power

Southeast:

Atlanta Hawks

Charlotte Hornets

*Louisville Colonels

Miami Heat

Orlando Magic

Washington Wizards

Western Conference:

Midwest Division:

Houston Rockets

*Kansas City Cougars

Memphis Grizzlies

Minnesota Wolves

New Orleans Pelicans

Oklahoma City Thunder

Pacific Division:

Los Angeles Clippers

Los Angeles Lakers

Portland Trail Blazers

Sacramento Kings

San Francisco Warriors

Seattle Sonics

Southwest Division:

Dallas Mavericks

Denver Nuggets

*Las Vegas Vipers

Phoenix Suns

San Antonio Spurs

Utah Jazz

Scheduling Format would go like this:

  • 16 games against the other conference, half would be home, half would be away. You'd play every team one time.
  • You'd play each team in your division twice at home, and twice away. Totaling 20 total games, and 4 against each other team.
  • 24 games against every non-divisional team in your conference, thus adding 24 games to your schedule, half would be home, half would be away.

So, in total:

  • 60 regular season games, so we're cutting 22 games from the current regular season, but we're still keeping the 8-game pre-season.
  • This in-total, would build up the hype for every individual game, and the games would mean a lot more, thus probably leading to higher ticket sales for each individual game, as there are less games to go to, the demand would be higher for tickets, filling up more arenas, while you'd also cut 11 home games, that seems like it would lose a lot, but you'd be adding more attendance to every game you do have.
  • The season would start a month later in mid-November, and last to mid-March, with the All-Star break occurring on the 3rd week in January, this will space out more games, so players will have more nights-off and a longer off-season.
  • Every playoff series would be shortened from 7 games to 5, having more potential for upsets and cutting out all order complaints. 2-2-1 would be the only order considered.
  • The draft would still occur at the same date.

While there's no chance this happens, because the NBA would have the potential to lose a lot of money, I think it'd make the overall NBA season be much better.

I don't mind buzzcut. Good thing that you re-applied your thoughts based on my NBA alignment. Just wondering if you can create a map based on those divisions with those teams. Because I'm trying to figure out myself on creating maps of my own related with this alignment.

Here's my idea for the NFL, for starter we contract the entire NFC except for the Rams, I'm mean will anyone really miss the Packers anyway. Also the AFC needs major realignment so here we go, I thought I'd name the new divisions after some football legends. Also the NFL needs to expand overseas so the new NFC will be the International Football Conference, the IFC.

AFC

Tyler Thigpen Division

-Kansas City Chiefs

-Miami Dolphins

-Denver Broncos

-Toledo (To be named later)-formerly the Raiders

Bubby Brister Division

-Pittsburgh Steelers

-Buffalo Bills

-New York Jets

-Jacksonville Jaguars

Tim Couch Division

-Cleveland Browns

-Denver Broncos

-Baltimore Ravens

-Tulsa Outlawzz-formerly the Patriots

Pacman Jones Division

-Tennessee Titans

-New York Jets

-Cincinnati Bengals

-San Diego Chargers

IFC

South American Division

-Lima Donkeys

-Rio de Janero Waxers

-Buenos Aires Argies

-Mexico City Drug Runners

European Division

-London Big Bens

-Glasgow Funny Accents

-Dublin Thiery Henrys

-Rome Fightin' Pizzas

-Rome(NY) Why are we heres

-Ukraine Freeze

Middle-East Divison

-Jerusalem Jews

-Baghdad (TBNL)

-Iran (TBNL)

-Berlin Panzers

Luxembourg Division

-Luxembourg Fightin' People from Luxembourg

-St. Louis Rams
