The Pointless Realignment Outpost

SEC is still primarily Southeastern, they added teams in North Carolina and Virginia so they can steal some fans from the ACC in that region, even though they are not as popular as the ACC schools there. They added Tulsa as damage control when Texas achieved their goal of being independent (as their AD said in 2040).

Big 12 expanded its geographical horizons a bit adding more teams from the Midwest,Tennessee, and Florida. Also they wanted a super-conference much like the rest of the conferences so they did add some teams who didn't fit. It was either adapt or die, and having lost Texas to the SEC in 2020, they felt that they had to damage control.

The Texas AD comment is just hypothetical, just for the sake of what would happen between now and 2100.

Okay, so it looks like only Las Vegas and Quebec City have put in formal bids for an NHL expansion team and it seems doubtful anyone else will be throwing a bid in now. So let's pretend they both get approved, and in the meantime, nobody else moves. Not Arizona, not Florida, not any team.

My proposal for a 32 team NHL:

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Western Canada Division: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Jose

Southwest Division: Arizona, Colorado, Dallas, St. Louis

Central Division: Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Eastern Canada Division: Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto

Northeast Division: Boston, Buffalo, Columbus, Pittsburgh

Atlantic Division: New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia

Southeast Division: Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington

Scheduling formula:

2 games (1 home, 1 away) versus the 16 teams in opposite conference = 32 games

3 games (1 home, 1 away, 1 alternating home or away that changes each season) versus the 12 teams in other divisions of same conference = 36 games

4 games (2 home, 2 away) versus other three teams in division = 12 games

1 extra home game and 1 extra road game against a division opponent, rotating each season = 2

32 + 36 + 12 + 2 = 82 games.

Bonus Hockey Day in Canada schedule:

1 PM EST = MTL v QUE

4 PM EST = OTT v TOR

7 PM EST = CGY v EDM

10 PM EST = VAN v WPG

Hey guys. I've been working on a realignment of the FBS, but I've got a few dilemmas here as far as where to put the teams. I had a few goals here: To put (most) teams back in their original conferences before the realignment wave hit, to bring back old rivalries, and to keep conference sizes reasonable. So my idea was to reduce the conferences to ten, put 12 in six conferences and 14 in four. Here are the problems I have:

  • Should I put Texas A&M and Missouri back in the Big 12 or should I keep them in the SEC? Right now I'm leaning toward the latter for two reasons. One is I'm moving Nebraska and Colorado back to the Big 12 for sure so the Big 12 would have 14 teams and the SEC 12. I don't think there are any other teams that can compete in the SEC so I can't increase the SEC to 14, and I think the SEC is better suited to have 14 teams than the Big 12. Second is, both schools compete evenly with the rest of the competition. A new policy that I'm establishing to go along with this is that non-conference rivalries are to be re-established, so we could have Texas-Texas A&M once again.
  • Which should I put in the Pac-12, BYU or Boise State? I know both could compete in the conference. The Pac-12 is staying at twelve teams. Also, the one I don't pick is going the MWC.

Please leave feedback!

(Note to mods: If needed, please move this somewhere else. The concepts just seemed like the best place to put it.)

Oops! Was not aware of that. Thanks for moving this.

Seems like Boise State is the popular decision for the Pac-12. Besides, BYU has a history in the MWC.

I'll be releasing a full chart later today.

EDIT: Forgot to add this, Charlotte will not be in my FBS. I was not in favor of their promotion.

Looks pretty good. I had been thinking of a slightly different set up.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

NORTHWEST Division: Calgary, Edmonton, LAS VEGAS, Vancouver

Pacific Division: Anaheim, ARIZONA, Los Angeles, San Jose

Southwest Division: Colorado, Dallas, NASHVILLE, St. Louis

Central Division: Chicago, COLUMBUS, Minnesota, WINNIPEG

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Eastern Canada Division: Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto

Northeast Division: Boston, DETROIT, PHILADELPHIA, Pittsburgh

Atlantic Division: BUFFALO, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers

Southeast Division: Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington

Scheduling formula:

2 games (1 home, 1 away) versus the 16 teams in opposite conference = 32 games

3 games (1 home, 1 away, 1 alternating home or away that changes each season) versus the 12 teams in other divisions of same conference = 36 games

4 games (2 home, 2 away) versus other three teams in division = 12 games

1 extra home game and 1 extra road game against a division opponent, rotating each season = 2

32 + 36 + 12 + 2 = 82 games.

I had thought about a Western Canadian division. In keeping that, it would look like:

Western Canada Division: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Pacific Division: Anaheim, ARIZONA, Los Angeles, San Jose

Southwest Division: Colorado, Dallas, LAS VEGAS, NASHVILLE

Central Division: Chicago, COLUMBUS, Minnesota, ST. LOUIS

With the NHL looking into teams in Las Vegas and Quebec, why not make the NHL like the NFL.. in the sense of realignment that is.

Eastern Conference

Canadian Division

Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec, Toronto

Northeast Division

Boston, Buffalo, New York Islanders, New York Rangers

Atlantic Division

New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington

South Division

Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Tampa Bay

Western Conference

Canadian Division

Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Central Division

Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota

Southwest Division

Arizona, Colorado, Dallas, St. Louis

Pacific Division

Anaheim, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Jose

74 Game Schedule (18 against division rivals, 24 against other conference teams, 32 games the other conference)

Playoffs: Top two in each division advance. Division winners earn seeds 1-4 while runner ups earn seeds 5-8. All series are Best of 7.
