Los Angeles has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders on terms that will pave the way for hosting the Summer Games in 2028 instead of 2024, according to a source close to the negotiation.

The deal will bring the Olympics back to Southern California for a third time, after Los Angeles hosted the Games in 1984 and 1932. It also opens the door for Paris to host the Games seven years from now.

Great news. Gives Paris what they want, and Los Angeles time to make these the best games ever.

Hey at least the 2024 and 2028 games won't bankrupt whole cities and countries since both already have most of the required venues in place. The IOC might finally have gotten their collective heads out of their collective asses with regard to the Summer games.

Winter games however... not so much.

I got really excited for this, then I realized I'll be 37 when the Games are here... I'm about to be 26.

I'm 31, half way between the two. Trust me when I say the time will go by much more quickly than you think.

I'm leaning towards the IOC showing accidental competence rather than learning from past mistakes and making the correct call here, but yeah it is good that the next 3 Summer Olympics won't be in places that require city-bankrupting infrastructure upgrades or all new stadiums.

London was great, Rio was not. Beijing was good, Athens was not. I'm in the camp of giving the Olympics to a rotating list of capable cities and stop worrying about stories like "Rio is NOT ready to host the Olympics in two weeks" and so on and so forth. My King of the World plan for the The Winter Olympics is that all events are held on the same schedule, but in different places all over the globe so one city doesn't have to bankrupt itself to build a bobsled course. You'd lose some of the spectacle of the best cold weather athletes all being in one place, but I think it'd be better for the actual competitions. Also since the Earth doesn't have winter anymore it'll be harder and harder to find suitable hosts.

Oh I know. I remember graduating high school vividly and I'm a few years away from my 10-year high school reunion. Time seems to be flying by faster and faster as I get older.

They were cool when it was in my hometown when I was 12, and it was still pretty neat at the wife's hometown when I was 26.  The Olympics are still a neat thing.  Not all the events are riveting, but as a whole, still cool.

If you have thoughts on attending any of the events, try to be a resident.  Locals tend to get preference when it comes to the ticketing lotteries for the biggest events.  Having family just outside Vancouver was how we were able to score tickets for the Gold Medal match in hockey.

Plenty of time to get my ass in gear to actually cover the games

I wonder if this bodes well for Salt Lake City to host again since they were a financial success and wouldn't need much added for venues.

I remember the huge uproar it caused here when Boston of all places was chosen as the U.S. Bid city. Not sure what they were smoking to see that. LOL
