Like they did with the NFL, MLB, and NASCAR, they overbid.  ESPN wasn't going to fall for FIFA and CONCACAF bs.

That's an entirely different cycle though. US Soccer needs to find someone with a point to prove to coach these guys. The idea that Arena could be anything but a stop gap between Klinsmann and the next guy never made sense to me. I also think if Klinsmann were still coach we'd be in the same boat. When you burn bridges with the major domestic league you tell the players in the league that you don't value them.

Really, to invest in football culture the MLS should realy drop the "american league" stuff and do divisions. You can keep the playoffs but have 2, 3 divisions, and a relegation system. Also would be good for you guys if CONCACAF and CONMEBOL would just merge and start a unified version of the Libertadores, with the whole continent.

The economics of stadium construction in the US make promotion/relegation a non-starter.

Not sure how pro/rel is the silver bullet that solves American soccer forever.

There are no quick fixes. Jurgen's German infusion was pretty good until John Brooks got injured, Julian Green flamed out, Jermaine Jones got old and Fabian Johnson was sent home. Arena did a good job of not losing very much until the very end when it mattered the most.

I'm really bummed, but at least we won't be playing in Russia. That's good, because Russia is awful and now I can boycott the World Cup without actually sacrificing anything.

Unfortunately, no.  There are still "soccer fans" who clutch their NCAA pearls.  My area has two lower Division I teams - UatAlbany and Siena - one DII in College of St Rose, and three DIII true teams - Union, RPI, and Skidmore, plus quasiDIII in Cobleskill and Sage, plus CC in Hudson Valley, Adirondack.  NY Capital District could have an academy or a junior team for the over 18 player, and they could attend college as well.

The NCAA is not a friend to the Federation.

And how will this be paid for?

It's just not tenable in a North American context. Hell, it's only really tolerated elsewhere because that's How It Was Done before the money got big. No one in North America is paying top dollar for a top flight team in a major league-calibre stadium only to risk being relegated to the minors.

There are hundreds of reasons why relegation isn't the quick-fix answer, but none of them really matter. The above is reason one, and that's enough to kill the discussion.

I think everyone kind of forgot that the US isn't always on their 'A' game in the Hexagon, especially on the road. 0-2-3 away from home soil...  It tells me that the Americans need to step up their game, especially outside of the friendly confines of American soil.

Thankfully, there's four years to fix this mess.

Total blow up of the Federation.

Replace those on the board with people who have a passion and ideas.

More women.  More former players.

With the money that will leave the NCAA.

Oh my sweet summer child.  NCAA soccer survives off of alumni donations and rakeoffs from football and basketball.  How are you going to get that money to pay for an academy?

Institutions survive on alumni donations.

Football and men's basketball survive on ticket sales, merchandise, boosters (legal and illegal), apparel and sneaker money.

Why should they spend money on junior soccer academies?

The point I'm getting at here is that for the infrastructure to develop even comparatively "overnight", you're going to need to line up a lot of heavily moneyed lunatics, because the academies are liable to bleed red ink in torrents for years.

The same reason why companies spend money in Canada and the US on junior hockey programs.  Spreading the marketing.

If you read what I suggested, junior leagues/teams would also be made.   I live in an hour that's 2 hours from NYC, 2.5 hours from Boston, 3.5 from Montreal.  The four clubs won't establish an academy.

Hell, even in Europe a few years ago some of the richest clubs were floating the idea of breaking away from their federations and forming a closed super-league. Nothing ever came of it, but the very fact it was even discussed suggests pro/rel isn't as sacrosanct as it's made out to be even in the sport's beating heartland.

Junior hockey's infrastructure has existed for decades and in Canada, at least is reasonably self-sustaining.  You're asking for them to pick up the tab on the start up costs, which is an entirely different and far more expensive beast.
