That's an entirely different cycle though. US Soccer needs to find someone with a point to prove to coach these guys. The idea that Arena could be anything but a stop gap between Klinsmann and the next guy never made sense to me. I also think if Klinsmann were still coach we'd be in the same boat. You can keep the playoffs but have 2, 3 divisions, and a relegation system. Also would be good for you guys if CONCACAF and CONMEBOL would just merge and start a unified version of the Libertadores, with the whole continent. Jurgen's German infusion was pretty good until John Brooks got injured, Julian Green flamed out, Jermaine Jones got old and Fabian Johnson was sent home. Arena did a good job of not losing very much until the very end when it mattered the most. I'm really bummed, but at least we won't be playing in Russia. The point I'm getting at here is that for the infrastructure to develop even comparatively "overnight", you're going to need to line up a lot of heavily moneyed lunatics, because the academies are liable to bleed red ink in torrents for years. Hell, even in Europe a few years ago some of the richest clubs were floating the idea of breaking away from their federations and forming a closed super-league. Nothing ever came of it, but the very fact it was even discussed suggests pro/rel isn't as sacrosanct as it's made out to be even in the sport's beating heartland.
