My alma mater won their final game of the season 22-6 today to finish the year 2-8 (which is actually an improvement from the last 3 or 4 seasons).

MPSSAA will release the seedings and matchups for the regional playoffs tomorrow morning. I'll be sure to share.

Maryland playoff seeds have been announced. First two rounds are regionals. The region winners will advance to the state semifinals where seeding/home field advantage is determined by a point system which I don't truly understand. Followed by the state championship games at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium at the US Naval Academy. Here's the first round matchups.

This weekend was nothing short of a massacre as four teams remain standing after the district round of the playoffs (Washington) and first round (Oregon).

3A: Kelso had their game tying extra point attempt blocked as they lost to Mercer Island 27-26... on the bright side, they do get to avoid playing traditional powerhouse O'Dea.

2A: Woodland lost on a last second field goal at W.F. West. This sucks because Woodland has a really good quarterback.

1A: Castle Rock couldn't get anything going and lost at Hoquiam.

2B: Of the five local teams playing, two of them won... One coming at the expense of another local team as Toledo rolled past Illwaco once again. The Indians get Concrete next week in the 1st Round. Kalama started slow, but took care of business in rolling over Onalaska. Next up is a home game with Adna, another regional foe. As for the others... Toutle Lake fell at Pe Ell/Willapa Valley while Whakiakum got blasted at home by Rainier (WA).

1B: Naselle had a bye this week and hosts Neah Bay for a spot in the state quarterfinals this upcoming weekend

Oregon 3A: Rainier won on Friday at La Pine with a last second touchdown while Clatskanie fell at home to Vale. The Columbians hit the road once again for the quarterfinal round as they play at 3rd seeded Nyssa.

Regular season ended in California, and playoff brackets were announced in the Southern Section. I'll break down the only division that matters to anyone outside of here, Division 1:

  • National No. 1 Mater Dei (Matt Barkley/Matt Leinart High) is obviously the top seed in CIF-SS D1, and it should be easy sailing to the final. Only team within a stone's throw of them in their side of the bracket is fourth-seeded Mission Viejo (Mark Sanchez High).
  • Mission is ranked 19th nationally and has the subplot of legendary coach Bob Johnson retiring at the end of this season. The Diablos have plenty of track stars and college-bound weapons, including Warren G's kid, WR Olaijah Griffin (UCLA).
  • Mission and Mater Dei will have two common opponents after this weekend. Mission Viejo beat Santa Margarita (Carson Palmer High) 28-23. Mater Dei beat SM 70-35. Mission Viejo plays Servite in the first round, Mater Dei just beat Servite 51-7. Mater Dei could play Long Beach Poly in Round 2. Mission Viejo beat Poly 12-7. (That is, if Poly beats JSerra, who MD beat 45-3). Mission Viejo could play Orange Lutheran in Round 2. Mater Dei beat OLu 51-21.
  • The other side of the bracket should be a semifinal collision course for the No. 2/3 seeds, and the only teams that could give Mater Dei a run for it. National No. 7 Centennial-Corona and No. 14 St. John Bosco.
  • Bosco lost to Mater Dei in league, 31-21. Centennial lost to national No. 2 IMG Academy in Week 2, 40-20.

The remaining survivors have all survived this weekend's games...

2B: Kalama had to survive a scare from Adna in overtime as a game winning interception seals a 36-29 win. The Chinooks await the winner of the game between Friday Harbor and Pe Ell/Willapa Valley next weekend in the quarterfinals. Toledo had to go north to play their game and had no issues with Concrete and blanked them 28-0. The win sets up a match-up with traditional powerhouse program Napavine next weekend in the quarterfinals.

1B: Naselle rolled 72-20 over Neah Bay last night to reach the state quarterfinal round next weekend. They'll host the #5 seed from the eastern Quad District.

Oregon 3A: Rainier went on the road again and pounded Nyssa 40-6. The win gets them to the state semifinals where they play at Santiam Christian next weekend. A win there sends them to the Championship game against either Cascade Christian or Scio.

There was 4 left... Now it's down to one.

Kalama won it's quarterfinal game with Pe Ell/Willapa Valley 50-15. The win gives them a date (and a rematch) with Napavine. The Tigers ended Toledo's season 35-7. This rematch is a big deal because Kalama defeated Napavine in Week 2, putting the Chinooks into the number 1 spot in the state polls, a position that they've kept from that point on.

Rainier saw it's season end against Santiam Christian in Hillsboro, meaning they finish a game short of the Class 3A final and Naselle got routed by Almira-Coulee-Hartline ending their season in the state quarterfinals.

We in Wisconsin have had a pretty good weekend so far...the state champions have been decided, and the Badgers beat those bastards in blue.  All seven games were broadcast on FS Wisconsin, as previously mentioned in a two day span, so without further ado, here go the scores.  I'm a bit late with em because the ol' PC has been acting up this week.

Thursday: Division 7 Championship: Bangor 37, Black Hawk 14.  Bangor finished a perfect 14-0 in winning their second title, while Black Hawk went home with L #1 to finish 13-1.

Div. 6 Championship: St. Mary's Springs blew out Iola-Scandinavia to the tune of 35-12.  The Ledgers finish undefeated, and as DJ Khaled would put it, another one (state title #7 for them), while Iola finishes 11-3.

Div. 5 Championship: Amherst and Lake County Lutheran fought it out to make for the first of the close games, with Amherst winning 28-21.  Both schools finished 13-1, with Amherst winning their third straight title and fourth overall.

Div. 4 Championship: In another close one, Lodi took down St. Croix Central 17-10.  Lodi went undefeated (14-0), while Central ends it at 12-2.  This is Lodi's first championship :winner:

Friday: Div. 3 Championsihp: Rice Lake had its way with New Berlin Eisenhower, winning 25-3.  Rice Lake finishes 11-2, while Ike goes home 13-1.  This is Rice Lake's second state title, and first since 1979.

Div. 2 Championship: Waunaukee edged Brookfield Central 14-13...the new champs featured Ron Dayne's son at RB, and capped off an undefeated season (take a guess, why don'tcha), while Brookfield Central hangs their helmets up for the winter at 13-1.  This was not only Waunaukee's first state championship, this was their first trip to Madison, so congrats to them.

Div. 1 Championship: Kimberly beat Sun Prairie 27-7.  The Papermakers finish undefeated while winning their fourth straight D1 title (5th straight of 7 overall, including three D2 titles before moving up), while the Cardinals finish 13-1.

And I've only just now bothered to read the state championship pdf, which is telling me all the games have been at Camp Randall since 1982.  Before then, they'd been at various locales all over the state...and by that, I mean one game might be in Oshkosh, another would be in Madison, yet another would be in La Crosse, etc.

My friend plays for Sun Prairie, so I'm disappointed to see them fall short. From what I saw of the game, though he played really well, and looks set to go to Whitewater next year. Kimberly is incredible though. 70 straight wins and 5 titles is no small feat.

It always bothered me that the WPIAL (Western PA Interschoolastic Athletic League) calls their champions "State Champions", even though it's just a league for the Western PA schools and Eastern PA has a better record over them in the actual state playoffs / championships.

Like people would wear jackets around that say "WPIAL STATE CHAMPION", and talk about their state championships, but they may never have even played in a state championship game.  It just goes more into the notion that Western PA high-school football is this magical thing, when the reality is that the schools from the east have the better head-to-head record.

The top four teams in each district get in the playoffs. There's a lot of five team districts too, so win one game and you're in. Last week's first round was bi-distrct, so 1st place in one district plays 4th places in another and vice versa.

Also, by playing teams in a class above  you're given credit for stepping up a division, even if you lose.

1 and 9? Jeez! I thought Maryland was bad regularly having 4-6 and/or 3-7 teams make playoffs.

It will get more convoluted as Class 5A will be spilt into two divisions for 2018.

Currently, 5A enrollment is between 1,100 and 2,149.  Where the split is made enrollment wise won't be known until February 1 as the enrollment "Snapshot Day" was October 27.

Also, by playing teams in a class above  you're given credit for stepping up a division, even if you lose.

That has happened in the past for Iowa when each class was 32 teams for the playoffs. Now that it's at 16 teams, it's easier to separate the good from the average and the bad.
