*in Negan voice* I have to give you boys credit, Hondo...yall got some boulder sized balls there, going up against the big boys!

If you saw the Hondo team that's pretty apt. I think their biggest player may be 5'9" and possibly 200 pounds.

1 and 9? Jeez! I thought Maryland was bad regularly having 4-6 and/or 3-7 teams make playoffs.

Two years ago, in the CIF-Southern Section "Southern" Division (what would roughly be Division 7 or 8 now (out of 13)), El Dorado High School here in Orange County made the playoffs at 1-9. Their one win was a forfeit. They were 0-10 on the field. They submitted an at-large consideration, they got a point in the formula for the toughest league in the division and they were one of two teams whose strength of schedule had a record over .500. So they made it.

But that was the old system.

Under the new system, last season, Brethren Christian went 9-1. The one loss was a forfeit. They were 10-0 on the field. They were ranked No. 2 in their division. However, their league dissolved before the season when another school dropped out to play 8-man football. So they had no way to qualify automatically and had to submit an at-large application. They did not qualify for the playoffs because all 16 spots were taken by automatic qualifiers.

Brethren Christian's football team folded this season due to lack of players.

Isn't that part of the problem with single gender, private schools playing in a state actor system? Generally, all-male schools must use a multiplier to their enrollment to indicate a Class/Clevelander, usually by 1.75 or 2x

But Texas didn't allow private schools in the state playoffs until specific Dallas and Houston private schools were allowed in 2003, but no state titles were won until 2010.

Then, less limits occurred in 2011.

Oh, the UIL uses NCAA rules for as long as I earning a NFHS certificate

Kalama won against Napavine and is heading to the Tacoma Dome next weekend for the 2B State Championship game against Liberty.

In the other classes.

1B: Sunnyside Christian vs. Almira-Coulee-Hartline (This is the 8 Man class and it shows with the offenses these teams have. Two games for each team and they've scored 62 and 60 points in each game)

1A: Royal vs. Meridian (Two 13-0 teams meet in the Dome. Meridian has taken my district [which is District 4] to task in their three games while Royal pitched two shut outs before giving up a lone score in the semifinal win over Newport)

2A: Hockinson vs. Tumwater (A District 4 showdown as the Hawks compete in the same league with Mark Morris, R.A. Long and Woodland while Tumwater are in the same district as these schools. Hockinson has cracked the 50 point barrier twice in three games while Tumwater did the state a favor by defeating Archbishop Murphy. If that name sounds familiar, it's because that's the school that scared the hell out of everyone last season with many forfeit victories on their side. To those bought into that hype, I say this: They are to high school football here as Gonzaga is to college hoops... a bully in the league and a victim come the postseason)

3A: O'Dea vs. Rainier Beach (The Fighting Irish was the team Kelso could of played in the first round... thank you for taking that bullet Mercer Island.)

4A: Richland vs. Woodinville (I have nothing here...)

Mater Dei of Santa Ana wins its first CIF-SS title since 1999 with a second win over St. John Bosco of Bellflower. One game to go and you can crown the Monarchs as National Champions.

They’ll play the fabelled De La Salle of Concord in the Open Division State Title Game. But in the Open, the North team and the South team are just picked and move on to the title game while the other Divisions play Regional Semis. So MD and DLS get a bye before that championship in Sacramento in two weeks.

Interesting to note that Mated Dei is 0-4 all time vs. De La Salle, but this isn’t one of De La Salle’s better teams. And the Mater Dei passing attack, wooooooooowee. Man.

Also, I covered the CIF-SS Division 7 title game, so if you wanna read about the El Modena Vanguards of Orange beating the Don Lugo Conquistadores of Chino for their first title since 1984, click here: http://www.ocregister.com/2017/12/02/el-modena-dominates-don-lugo-captures-cif-ss-division-7-football-title/

My alma mater North Little Rock won the 7A Arkansas State Championship this week. It's the first time a Central Arkansas team has won state at the highest level since Little Rock Central in 2004, and NLR's first title in 45 years. It was also the second-straight undefeated regular season for NLR. They've historically had a lot of good teams that just had bad luck, or lost at the wrong time, so it was good to see them finally win state.

Pennsylvania finished.

Final scores:

Thursday

1A Jeannette 42, Homer-Center 12

4A Erie Cathedral Prep 38, Imhotep Charter 28

Friday

2A Southern Columbia 48, Wilmington 0

5A Archbishop Wood 49, Gateway 14

Saturday

3A Quaker Valley 41, Middletown 24

Pine-Richland 41, Philadelphia St. Joseph's Prep 21

Saturday featured snow throughout the early game and the night game started with some wind and snow and quickly died off right around kickoff.

PA has had title games since 1988. A span of 30 years. Southern Columbia has made the title game 16 years. And won their 8th state title. Both are records for PIAA.

Overall. The games were surprisingly one-sided. Mostly the favorites won. And a few blowouts were expected (Wood, SC, PR), but shutting out Wilmington was a big surprise, and Jeannette winning easily as a slight underdog was entirely unexpected. Homer-Center had just knocked off defending juggernaut Bishop Guifoyle two weeks earlier and were listless against Jeannette. Who won their first title since Terrelle Pryor led them to glory.
