MLB changes 2018?

Someone posted this the other day on facebook saying it was 36 years ago.

So it does appear there was some merchandise back then with light blue.

Though I agree the gray versions are better looking.

Man, if they use trucker hats in 2018, I’d be so disappointed. I already think this bp hat and the diamond era from the previous set were cheap excuses of light and cool to charge so much.

Yeah, this is driving me insane, and I'm not even a Phillies fan.  Why is the ball (with seam line) not in the center of the P, and why is the P's stem not at an angle?  Looks terrible.

I hold the unpopular opinion that the old Phillies "P" looked better as the jersey variant, i.e., straight and without the ball seam.

 

 

It's cleaner and doesn't give into the whole late 1960s-late 1970s logo design philosophy of "insert equipment at every opportunity." Pair it with an appropriate primary logo and you'd have the basis of a good identity for the 1970s-early 1990s. Note the emphasis.

Ray's are wearing the Devil Ray hat with the powder blue jerseys. Doesn't look good IMO

Have to say, I was a little bit surprised at how subdued and low-key the Jays' ceremony honoring Halladay was. They did it on Opening Day (rather than having a separate "Roy Halladay Day"), and it was over in a blink of an eye. Nice respectful ceremony, but surprised that it didn't get its own day, so to speak.

 

The Phillies did add a flag in Ashburn Alley that will fly during the season this year with Halladay’s name and number

They didn't have the seam line on the jerseys for the first 15 or so years of that look because you weren't allowed to have anything that looked like a baseball on the jersey (could distract hitters by some bizarre logic) so they had a cap version (which varied greatly) and jersey version.

 

What a lot of people also don't realize is that the jerseys used red pinstripes and they wore red caps for a while before switching to maroon.  The maroon pinstripes came in 87, not sure exactly when the red cap went away.

There is so much inconsistency and confusion surrounding that Phillies logo.

 

Introduced for the 1970 season, which was supposed to be the first in the new Veterans Stadium. Construction was delayed and they ended up wearing the new uniforms at the old ballpark.

 

From 1970-1973 the P featured the baseball "stitching" on both the caps and jerseys.

 

In 1974 the baseball disappeared from the logo on the jerseys.

 

In 1987 the baseball returned to the jersey logo.

 

1992 the Phillies rebranded and discontinued use of the logo.

I would love to know more about the hat and what years it was red and when it became maroon. 

 

When I was a kid I had a mesh back cap and souviner helmet and both were bright red. That was mid 80s. A few years later all you saw was maroon. I also know that one of my elementary teachers had a fitted cap (which was very rare at the time) and it was maroon. This must have been around 85 or 86. 

 

I cant find any definitive evidence when the switch happened, or if they maybe had separate homes and roads (which would actually make sense since the homes had red pins and the blue roads didn’t have much if any red).

I thought the red was only used for the first couple years at the Vet in the early 70s. I could be completely mistaken but they wore maroon in the 1980 World Series year.

This helmet looks pretty red.  I'm not sure of the year of the picture.  The white cleats might give a clue, but I also found a similar picture with maroon cleats from 1976 (see Bicentennial and NL 100th Anniversary patches).

 

 

Next, a 1976 edition of Baseball Digest showing Larry Bowa in a hat that is clearly red (but also no patches, meaning the picture might not be from 1976).

 

 

Last, but not least, a 1978 Topps card with a maroon hat . . . and presumably a picture taken in 1977.

 

 

Preliminary conclusion -- It looks like the transition may have occurred in 1977.  However, it's also possible that Luzinski continued to wear a red helmet after an earlier switch.
