Having been to Miller Park several times (I live in Milwaukee), I must say that the concourses and the rear windows make it far lighter than the depressing Kingdome. I know some people may take umbrage at this, but I really do enjoy Miller Park. I don’t get the vibe of depression from it, unlike fixed dome stadiums.

I don't know if I's say I take umbrage at it, but I don't agree.  I hate that place, and can't wait for its time to be up.  The roof is ever-present and depressing.

The only good thing about the relatively short life of modern stadiums is that we're closer to Miller Park's demolition than its opening.

I have to agree with you on Miller Park. Having been to almost majority of all current roofed MLB parks, it was honestly my favorite of them and one of my favorite MLB ballparks in general. There's much more to it than just its looks. It had a great crowd atmosphere, the best of any domed/roofed park I've been to. It truly felt like the home of baseball team not just a warehouse.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

All I know is that the advance forecast for a week from Monday is for AM snow showers, but I know I'll be comfortable watching Opening Day from Section 221.

I don't get the hate for Miller Park. As for the person who LIKED the Humptydome in Minneaoplis? Wow - that was a horrible place to watch baseball. It was way too sterile for my tastes.

It's where I sit.

The Metrodome was the only indoor stadium that never looked depressing to me. Probably has to do with having more color than most indoor stadiums

The Astrodome was fine when it had the exploding scoreboard. During the day time, you could look at the roof and see light so it wasn't bad. But I love the Astrodome more for sentimental reasons (most rooted in childhood memories) than an actual acknowledgement that it was some sort of visual beauty on the inside.

I went to the Metrodome for three college baseball games one weekend in 1995 (LSU played in a tournament up there), and it felt darker to me. I also felt it was a pretty no-frills place, and I wasn't a fan. But I don't get depressed vibes in domes, probably because I'm excited to be at the game. I had New Orleans Saints season tickets for 13 years, and it was only the play on the field that ever conjured up depressing feelings (mainly near the end of the Jim Haslett era).

I will say I like it a lot better with the roof open. With the roof closed and the blinds drawn (or whatever you want to call it), it gets grim in there.

My only experience (unfortunately) with Miller Park is on television, but I've always found it to be a pleasant looking park. The glass wall makes it look open from the televised shots.

The glass is better, but the outfield wall is so close to the field that it looms large and claustrophobic in person, even with the glass.

I understand that the roof is great for weather, but the cost is way, way too high.  That particular roof design never actually retracts, only opens a little.

My complaint with the retractable roof thing is, even when they have retracted, most of them are so huge and dominating that it still feels like you're playing baseball in a deep canyon, or at the bottom of a well. Safeco and Minute Maid seem less bad in this respect.

Watching a game in Chase Field feels like watching baseball in a CostCo. Then when they open up the roof, it kind of feels like watching baseball in a giant shoe box with the lid open. I mean they have the windows they open so you can see at least some of the surrounding desert, but it barely helps.

Safeco is the best because the roof is separate from the rest of the building, therefore it doesn’t effect the look of the ballpark or the structural necessity to hold the thing up.

That’s my problem with Miller Park; the roof design ensures that it’s always looming over the games.

And even when the roof is open, the outfield is enclosed.

Opening the windows doesn’t do anything about that huge, ugly concrete ring.  It contributes to the claustrophobic feeling as well.

There are two styles of on-field caps, regular 59fifty and low profile 59fifty. The low profile works best for the shape of my head and body.

Miller Park, Minute Maid, Marlins, etc., all look like crap because of their walls and windows.  When the roofs are open, they're still not really "open air" parks - they're just enclosed arenas with holes in the roof, like old Texas Stadium.  I actually didn't realize just how bad Miller looked until those photos above - and those are during day time.

As I've gotten older, I've begun to appreciate the practicality that a roof brings - but not at that cost.  The roof should just be a covering, not make for an enclosure. If it's a million degrees, or zero degrees, that's fine, as long as I'm dry.

Minute Maid looks great from right field! Its looming-roof effect is very lopsided. (But yeah, still a lot better than the Miller Park type.)
