Having been to almost majority of all current roofed MLB parks, it was honestly my favorite of them and one of my favorite MLB ballparks in general. There's much more to it than just its looks. It had a great crowd atmosphere, the best of any domed/roofed park I've been to. It truly felt like the home of baseball team not just a warehouse. Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? During the day time, you could look at the roof and see light so it wasn't bad. But I love the Astrodome more for sentimental reasons (most rooted in childhood memories) than an actual acknowledgement that it was some sort of visual beauty on the inside. I went to the Metrodome for three college baseball games one weekend in 1995 (LSU played in a tournament up there), and it felt darker to me. I also felt it was a pretty no-frills place, and I wasn't a fan. But I don't get depressed vibes in domes, probably because I'm excited to be at the game. I had New Orleans Saints season tickets for 13 years, and it was only the play on the field that ever conjured up depressing feelings (mainly near the end of the Jim Haslett era). I understand that the roof is great for weather, but the cost is way, way too high. That particular roof design never actually retracts, only opens a little. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Then when they open up the roof, it kind of feels like watching baseball in a giant shoe box with the lid open. I mean they have the windows they open so you can see at least some of the surrounding desert, but it barely helps. Safeco is the best because the roof is separate from the rest of the building, therefore it doesn’t effect the look of the ballpark or the structural necessity to hold the thing up. And even when the roof is open, the outfield is enclosed. Opening the windows doesn’t do anything about that huge, ugly concrete ring. It contributes to the claustrophobic feeling as well. I actually didn't realize just how bad Miller looked until those photos above - and those are during day time. As I've gotten older, I've begun to appreciate the practicality that a roof brings - but not at that cost. The roof should just be a covering, not make for an enclosure. If it's a million degrees, or zero degrees, that's fine, as long as I'm dry.
