NFL with Soccer-Style Tiers (Boot out the Bad Team)

Interesting story about what the NFL would look like in a relegation/promotion setup. The only part that definitely doesn't work is having NFL, CFL, AFL, and NCAA teams in a playoff, but maybe the bottom 4 play for the #1 pick?

American sports leagues have drafts instead of pro/rel. I don't think you can have one and the other; you have to pick.

If you wanted to treat the NFL like the old AFL/NFL or even MLB American and National Leagues, then you could only have intra-conference games until the Super Bowl, with teams switching conferences each season for fun. But that seems kind of arbitrary, doesn't it?

There needs to be more incentive to be in the top tier too. Maybe bottom tier teams can only charge so much for tickets, like they are a discount league. That way there's a revenue incentive for the organization to get to and stay in the top tier.

Side note: funny that they're using the old Panthers logo.

A Super Bowl between the top teams of the bottom conference, or, worse, one between the best of the top and best of the bottom, is as teats-on-a-bull as that third-place game the NFL used to do.

Well the best top tier team wouldn't play the worst bottom tier team, but the worst of the top tier would play the best of the bottom to see which team deserves to be in the top tier.

It's an interesting concept, but, entertaining the idea, the schedule would be a nightmare. 15 games is weird and is less money for the league. Why not do 16 games, with something similar to the interleauge rivalry series, where every year two teams, no matter the conference, play each other. It would personally be a shame not to see Ravens/Steelers every year.

Of course, if this happened, small market teams would die out, and ultimately the league would lose a good chunk of teams. lacking from fans not wanting to support a team that's stuck in the middle of a second tier league. The NFL is probably the most optimistic sport of the Big 4, as a team like the 7-8-1 Panthers in 2015 can turn a new leaf and go 15-1 in 2016. This is what makes the NFL exciting, going hand-in-hand with the "Any Given Sunday" mentality. You'd lose this with a pro/rel system, and you'd see an even more watered-down product in the NFL as a total.

You got scumbag owners in the indoor leagues...and then fly by night types in the semipro ranks.  Is anyone really clamoring for the Tampa Bay Storm or Detroit Seminoles to get a crack at the big time?  Really?

This may have worked in pre-luxury-box America.  But how can teams bilk the taxpayers for 9-figures to house a team that could be relegated to the minors?

why didn't soccer style relegation ever become part of US sports anyway.

especially in the early 20th century, just evolved differently than in europe.

Also, the focus on the franchise rather than the focus on the cub

You could ask the same question about Aussie football...actually I think pro/rel would've made a lot of sense there.  The old VFA had it for a few decades, though I don't think you could ever convince the likes of Essendon or Collingwood that risking losing their long-held spots in the AFL is worth anything.

As winters in buffalo mentioned, though, I'd agree that a startup league, maybe something in a 3-5 state area could give it a shot.
