My own bias aside, two teams that finished, what, six games worse than their opponent making the playoffs because they won a single isolated game at the end of the season? That would make an absolute mockery of MLB's already heavily-flawed playoff system.

Any decency in the playoff system was killed for good by the crappy 2012 Cardinals and the 2014 Giants got a few whacks on the dead horse. Now it's just sad.

Ken Rosenthal had a thing in the Athletic today where he pointed out that in Korea they play a doubleheader, but the higher seeded team only has to win one game to advance. I'd spread the two games out to two days, but I think I like that idea. It would create actual races for the #1 Wildcard spot and would really handcuff the second wildcard, which they should be. Even if they manage to win twice and sneak out of the wildcard round they're starting the LDS with their 3rd best starter, which makes getting the #1 overall seed a bigger deal. And if the higher seed loses two at home I wouldn't feel so bad about the clearly better regular season team going out early.

My own bias aside, the Twins winning today would not be the mockery.  If it's a mockery, the mere possibility of it is a mockery.  The mockery is the format.  The Twins, per the format, are in New York to play a game that they'll try to win.

(As I've acknowledged, the Twins made a playoff spot that I don't feel should exist).

Rosenthal is mistaken; they play the two games over two days (game 1 is Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 1 am eastern, game 2 is Thursday night/Friday morning...go NC Dinos!). They have a weird playoff system in Korea. It’s a ten-team league. The 4th and 5th place teams play in the two-game Wild Card series, with the 4th place team hosting both games and needing to win only one. The winner faces the 3rd place team in the best-of-five semi-playoff; the winner faces the 2nd place team in the best-of-five playoff; the winner faces the 1st place team in the best-of-seven Korean Series. Until recently, there were a couple of neutral site games in the Korean Series. So the 1st place team has a bye into the finals, but has to sit around for a long time between the end of the season and the start of their postseason.

100% agree. I don't blame the Twins or the Rockies at all. The blame is entirely on the format.

I can't remember ever being less interested in the playoffs than I am this year. There isn't a single team I really like, three I dislike, one of which I absolutely can't stand.

Want: Rockies over Twins just for gits and shiggles

What's probably going to happen: Red Sox over Dodgers and I won't watch a single solitary second of that series.

Rockies vs Twins is FOX's and MLB's worst nightmare.

I like the idea of a wild card doubleheader format. Then again, if the better wild card team drops the first game but wins the second one, I can see how that might be unfair for that team to have to burn through their two best starting pitchers before facing the #1 seed in the LDS.

so what if it's unfair? Should have won the division and not have to worry about it.

you know, this sentence alone makes me want to see this happen

Looks like a battle of the bullpens.  Good luck vs Cleveland, Yankees.

Whoever wins, the Indians are gonna have fun with them.

Fun fact - the only team with a better run differential than the Yankees this season was Cleveland.

So the Indians are favored and they should be but, theoretically, the Yankees will pose a much bigger threat than the Twins would have.

Their terrifying bullpen also sets them up perfectly for the playoffs. Don’t sleep on the Yankees, they’re scary.
