FiddySicks Posted October 21, 2017 Share Posted October 21, 2017 Red Wedding today in San Francisco, as the Giants "reassign" their entire coaching staff under Bruce Bochy, including Dave Reghetti, who was the longest tenured coach in all of baseball. I get that they lost 98 games and had to make some changes, but DAMN. That's absolutely brutal. I get the sense that these departures/reorganizations were a long time coming, maybe going back to last year. Righetti was probably frustrated by the lack of talent coming his way. There's only so much he can do with Matt Moore, an aging Johnny Cueto and Shark, and a bullpen in disarray. A front office job is a semi-retirement. In good news, the Giants are thankfully changing up their player development strategies: It's a start, methinks. I love both of those hirings, especially after the Tigers hired Gardenhire, another one of those boring old white dude managers that just kinda float around. Wouldn't be surprised if Yankees regress next year now. Carl Willis (Red Sox pitching Coach) was also snatched by The Indians. Fox Posted October 26, 2017 Share Posted October 26, 2017 Girardi not returning to the Yankees seems reminiscent of Jim Harbaugh getting the boot from the 49ers and Tom Thibodeau from the Bulls. Clearly a great coach/manager, but shown the door almost certainly because of a clash of egos. I'd expect Girardi to get a slew of opportunities going forward, be it another managerial opening, a front office role, or even in TV. The Nationals opening seems like a pretty good one at least in the short run, but he may want a year off after a hectic 10-year run in New York. This is what came to mind for me. With Thibs, it's not like he was the greatest coach of all time and certainly wasn't without his downfalls and controversies, but he was fired because they wanted a bitch coach to come in and make chicken salad out of chicken . Reinsdorf doesn't give a rat's ass about the Bulls, and would rather get some White Sox money via the Bulls (re: Jordan Bell) and didn't want to hear Thibs drama all the damn time while they gutted their already mediocre-to-bad roster. Farrell handled the bullpen terribly for the Red Sox, along with his "aggressive" base running strategy (dead last in baserunning), and Dusty only continued the Nats tradition of having a spectacularly season thrown away by choking in the second round. tp49 Posted October 26, 2017 Share Posted October 26, 2017 Girardi wasn't fired. His contract expires next week and they decided not to bring him back. The biggest takeaway from this to me is that given the revolving door of Yankee managers in the 80's and early 90's for the past 22 seasons the Yankees have had two managers which in this day and age is amazing. That said, I'm not impressed by the shortlist of candidates that I've seen published in the New York and other baseball media. Then again when Joe Torre was hired prior to the '96 season I thought George had lost his damn mind and look what happened. After a decade at the helm maybe it's time for a change. Will they be worse off without Girardi? I don't know we'll know in a year. I'm going to try and keep an open mind unless they hire Dusty Baker or Matt Williams then I'd look to having the front office committed,* *I don't see that happening at all, putting it out there as a just in case.
