Overwatch League branding

I was very, very surprised to see there was no thread here about this. Over the last few weeks, the 12 teams for the charter run of the Overwatch League (the first city-based brands in esports) were announced...

With the entire slate now announced, and not having seen anything about this here, I'd be curious to see what the board thinks. There's a real range of identities, though the wordmarks do get rather same-y, and the plural wordmarks give me a bad XFL vibe.

In my personal opinion, the New York Excelsior has to be the most unconventional, but it's getting the wrong sort of attention from what I've seen. I've heard critiques that not only is the logo too vague (though it'll make for tons of great merch), but the players (mostly Asian) might not even be able to pronounce the name.

Most are well executed, with the glaring exception of the poorly kerned Valiant.

If you're like me and think this league won't last very long, and that the logos will inevitably make their way onto high school football helmets, Seoul and LA's logos (though maybe not in those colors, of course) will definitely be common sights in 2025.

i'm a fan of the shock, but i'd be a fan of theirs anyway cause it's a SF team. the gladiators will prolly be known as LAG in game, which is a nice meme.

They might want the GLA abbreviation to avoid that.

im surprised they are able to get away with that logo . It looks like the MLB logo

EDIT: Apparently they did try and oppose the trademark : http://mashable.com/2017/07/17/overwatch-league-mlb-logo/#JlBETjJP8gqD

Then they changed their mind on filing opposition : https://dotesports.com/overwatch/overwatch-league-major-league-baseball-logo-16196

Since the NBA and MLS used similar logos they probably decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

Maybe because the New York team is owned by the Mets owners?

You were? This is a sports logos forum.

well e-sports are definitely in the realm of sports. It takes hand eye coordination, teamwork, physical and mental skill, hours and hours of practice, etc. There is alot in common with traditional sports than people realize

So I stumbled upon this professional gaming league called the Overwatch League this weekend. While I don't consider this a sport, the aesthetic of the league, and especially the logos, feel very much like sports leagues. Their website looks awesome, and I especially love the logos of the Boston Uprising, Shanghai Dragons, and Florida Mayhem (which should be called the Miami Mayhem)

Anyway, what do you guys think about it?

I play OW a lot so this is something .that's all over the Blizzard app, in game, etc. Some of the teams look like the generic homemade E-Sports teams as far as branding, but there are a few really good ones.

Bad:

YX6JZ6FR89LU1507822882865.svgDallas Fuel

UPM8U5QV3DDU1507858876250.svgHouston Outlaws (well this is more the color scheme that doesn't do it for me)

Good:

E9MU0AK0JIXT1507858876249.svgSeoul Dynasty

LAKZ6R7QEG6S1507822883033.svgPhiladelphia Fusion

0SY7LHKHV86R1507822883113.svgSan Francisco Shock

As far as its merits as a sport, I'd consider it to be up there. I don't think sports can be defined as purely physical, i mean just look at race car driving. It does take a lot of skill (albeit non-physical skill) to be good at OW, and it's not like there are just a bunch of game mechanics that the pros abuse. They have to play like everyone else, they are just extremely better at doing it, which sounds like pro sports to me.

what the hell is Philadelphia's mascot?

They're not mascots so much as playable characters in the game. I don't even think those heroes (playable characters) are associated in the team in any sort of "mascot" capacity, i think it's to show off the in-game "uniform" for the teams, but i may be wrong.

Winston is a "tank" hero with a lot of health and a shield. He has an electricity gun, which resulted in the nickname, "Mike Pence".
