I think you’re right.  Both bids have deficiencies; Cincinnati’s was the stadium, Sacramento’s was the depth of the owners’ pockets. I suspect MLS told them to fix and come back, and the one who does the best job will get the spot.

Congrats on your MLS spot, Cincy.

Also hearing reports that he’s started negotiating with potential buyers in Columbus.  #SaveTheCrew might actually be happening.

Maybe we get the Columbus-Cincinnati future rivalry after all. If Precourt sells I wonder if he'll join the Sacramento bid if they still intend to bid. Precourt is from Northern California. San Francisco to be specific.

Precourt reportedly has given up on Butler Shores. Only current option is reportedly located further from downtown than Mapfre is from downtown Columbus.

Sounds like he's gotten more pushback from Austin than expected because Austin doesn't want to gift a free stadium to a bad-faith operating a$$hole any more than Columbus does. Also I think he didn't anticipate the level of blowback he was going to receive and his dipstick attorneys didn't realize how difficult it'd be to move a team out of Ohio or the amount of court costs they'd be up against.

Garber might be coming around to the fact that Precourt made him look like a goof because he found a loophole through the carefully crafted expansion racket. That's pure speculation on my part.

I think Plan A for Precourt when bought the team was always to move it to Austin, for reasons only he knows, and then eventually flip it for profit. Plan B of holding the team for ransom and then selling for profit also works. Would probably be less work for him in the end too.

The last I'd heard, in addition to the McKalla Place site that you mention, a location at Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park was still in play.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Sabino "Pio" Renteria - Austin's District 3 Council Member - is on record as saying that if Butler Shores doesn't have the support of Austin residents, Guerrero Colorado River Park could work, so long as construction of a soccer-specific stadium "would trigger an economic overhaul and spotlight a property that needs help". In fact, the newspaper quotes Renteria as stating, "I don't want to take the (Guerrero Colorado River) park off the list (of potential soccer stadium sites) because then we wouldn't have the ability to go into an in-depth discussion on how we can fix that area."

Now, a soccer-specific stadium at the Guerrero site may yet go the way of the dodo, but I don't believe said possibility has technically been eliminated quite yet.

The council meets on the 15th so a lot of questions could be answered regarding Guerrero. With MLS2Austin rotating between blaming fans in Columbus and calling council members Crew fans it will be interesting to see how MLS's advocates in Austin address council. The fact there are reports of Crew leadership talking with Columbus businesses is a good sign, but not a guarantee the Crew are staying put.

Miami is now official in MLS.

About freaken time.  How long has this process taken? 3-4 years??

That being said...the other *ahem* Miami Professional soccer team has...accepted it's place I suppose?

Hopefully Cincinatti can get in next time; they seemed to be doing all the right things and have support - just ran out of time.

At least the Miami fiasco is (hopefully) over

Miami has nothing to do with the other bids vying for expansion. Cincinnati, Sacramento, and Detroit haven't been ruled out for this round.

That other Miami team can hardly complain, since Beckham planted his flag long before Silva decided he wanted to own a club too.

As for how long it took, that’s MLS pushing Beckham to the very limits of his contract.  He might have had the right to own a team for pennies on the dollar, but the league certainly wasn’t going to cut him any slack while he put the plan together.

At the moment, NASL has four teams ahead of any potential 2018 season, with California United FC, 1904 FC, the New York Cosmos and Puerto Rico FC involved. Cal United and 1904 FC — both expansion sides — have never played a match before.

So what you're saying, then, is that the NASL has one team.

During the live stream to announce the Miami MLS Team, people were upset on the live chat that they didn't reveal the team name and/or team colors.

Then they didn’t read the press release announcing the event. Because it was quite explicit.

Ah, that's good then.  It seemed like the biggest kick in the guts for Cincinnati considering how close they are to getting all their ducks in a row, only for Miami to swoop in at the last minute.

Sacramento might have a similar complaint.

When all of the owners, Don Garber and the mayor posed for photos, the people in the chat were like "that's it?  That was a waste of time" and "stupid."

Fair enough, but that’s all that was promised them.  And the announcement of a new club is hardly nothing.

After four years of waiting, the Southern Legion didn’t seem to mind all that much.
