True, but a year ago we would have said exactly the same thing about Edmonton and Indy.  And they both left.

Also reading reports that Puerto Rico hasn’t paid its players since December 15th.  Despite the fact that NASL contracts are supposed to be year-round, not just the season.  PRFC seems dead.

The Puerto Rico thing is odd seeing as though it's not like the owner is a recluse.

True.

Weve had some clarification, though - PRFC hasn’t paid anybody since they’re all out of contract.   They didn’t renew any of their players’ contracts, essentially releasing everybody.

Really looks like they’ve given up.

So the USL released their alignment for 2018 with the numerous new teams placed in their respective new East/West locations.  Prominent note about there being 33 teams (17 in the West, 16 in the East) as well as highlighting the new arrivals from NASL with Indy Eleven and NCFC looking to start up local rivalries with nearby teams....

However this is interesting...

Also of note is that "Orlando City B elected not to participate in the USL at the Division II level in 2018 while it evaluates its future options".

Sooner or later, that owner is going to have to address the status of PRFC.  I know he's busy right now, but by the time he's not busy anymore, we will already have known the status of that team and the league.  For someone who was passionate about bringing a soccer team to Puerto Rico, the fact that he has not commented on his team is a bit surprising.

His team president, former Galaxy exec Tom Payne, left the franchise around Thanksgiving.

Earlier in '17, Payne knew Carmelo's effort was not going make it.

With Puerto Rico as it is post-Maria, you seem more concerned about Carmelo and less those who still live there.

The winter baseball league was set back months, so why think that the square fields/stadium are going to be ready in time?

I don’t know if that’s fair. The team is the subject of this particular conversation.

We we all know the terrible struggles facing Puerto Rico. Don’t know that every conversation needs to be prefaced with a reminder.

The fact is that schedules for 2018 need to be made up now.  If PRFC is going to join a new league, their time is running out.

Mexicans have great respect for him.

As a Léon fan, I don't really see how a 35 year old striker fresh off retirement is going to help us win the Clausura. At least it might get US viewers to tune in.

Sigh, why?

This is probably a pretty unpopular take, but Landon Donovan is probably one of my absolute least favorite pro athletes of all time. It's really a shame that he's currently the face of US soccer (but it explains SO much about the current state of pro soccer in this country). The guy seemed to have very little drive even in his prime and if he would've had even an ounce of “it” he could have been a top 50 player in the world and play at a big club IMO. But just never did. Every club he played with he eventually had some off the pitch problem that led to him leaving or there were questions about his commitment to his profession that led to his stock tanking. I don't miss him one bit and I wish he would just stay gone.

And if that's the case, that's fine. The issue I take with him isn't so much the fact that he decided to walk away from the game when he did. I also dont take that much issue with the fact that he played so absolutely aloof at any point where things weren't going just perfect for him. My issue with him is and always has been his reaction to some of the challenges he faced and the almost shameless sense of entitlement he had. He couldn't really cut it in Europe so he came back to the Quakes, and felt he wasn't getting enough of his due after two titles in San Jose and moved on from that. That's relatively normal, but the issue was that he had some pretty serious drama because he took it as a sign of "disrespect", when the truth is that while he was in Europe, he wasn't quite the player he personally thought he was. Then when he's back home in the MLS as the big fish in a small pond, Beckham came to the Galaxy and he showed that really didn't enjoy that because he lost some of his profile. He took that famous sabattacal, Kilnsman (who he had ALREADY had issues with in Germany due to much of this same crap) passed him over on the WC roster and he pretty much threw a fit because he thought that was his spot despite not putting in the work.

I dont doubt that Donovan had some mental issues and that contributed to his shortcomings, and he should never be knocked for that. BUT, and this is where I said it won't be popular, there is also a big part of his struggles that stemmed from the fact that he's always just been kind of an ass, too.

I bet you Landon wouldn't have whiffed against Belgium.

:censored: Wondo.

I'm so sick of people believing Donovan would've buried that shot in the back of the net. Both players would normally hit a shot like that, it just wasn't Wondo's day. If Donovan misses that shot would he get as much crap? I doubt it.

The Loons have signed Cameroon international forward Frantz Pangop.

Not the sort of acquisition I had hoped for to start the new year - Minnesota needs backline reinforcements some fierce - but still one I can get behind, especially if they play him as a second forward in tandem with Christian Ramirez. I've wanted Adrian Heath to switch to a two-striker set so opposing defenses can't just key in on Ramirez, and now they have enough attackers to make that possible. On the other hand Pangop may just be used as a replacement for Johan Venegas, who's been loaned back to Costa Rica in advance of the World Cup.

And speaking of Ramirez, he's finally gotten a well-deserved USMNT call-up.

That's not really surprising - Whale's Vagina FC has already said that it won't be ready until 2019 at the earliest, and California United is still just a temporary placeholder website.  No coach, no players, almost no staff, no fans, no nothing.  And the season was originally supposed to start in less than two months.

The NASL is such a :censored: show.  They can't even be bothered to do expansion clubs right, and that was the most important thing in keeping their D2 status.

The 2019 United Soccer League expansion club that will call Birmingham, Alabama home has unveiled its branding. The team will be known as Birmingham Legion FC.

Along with the word LEGION, the team's logo features a hammer, an anvil, and three sparks, all enclosed within a shield. Team colors will be "Molten Gold" and "Attack Black".

Despite the fact that Birmingham Legion FC will not play its matches at Legion Field, the team's name is - according to Legion FC vice president Morgan T. Copes - inspired by the facility. At the brand unveiling, Copes said, "We wanted to pay tribute to our past. You think about Birmingham's sporting history, and you think about Legion Field. There is a lot of history in that building, and that's a lot of great history for our city. Birmingham has centered around Legion Field for so long, we thought this was a great tip of the hat to the stadium."

The hammer and anvil iconography is said to be a recognition of Birmingham's hardworking roots. One can presume that the city's famed statue of Vulcan, located atop Red Mountain, was also an inspiration. The imagery is also a nod to the Birmingham Hammers, a former National Professional Soccer League side that will represent the city in the Premier Development League in 2018. Copes, a lifelong soccer player, co-founded the Hammers. The three sparks are said to embody the team's fiery spirit and define the elements of its character: passion, pride, and community.

Man with all these new teams, the USL section is going to need a massive revamp at this point.

I don't hate the identity.  It's a nice nod to the Hammers while being different.  It's too bad they won't be at Legion Field to fully bring it together.  The "Sparks" as they call it reminds me too much of the Steelers hypocycloids, especially with 3 of them.
