As people who follow sport uniforms, we should be able to tell someone easily what a team's colour scheme is.  It is getting to the point that I do not even know what the actual Houston Rockets' colour scheme is anymore.

How is this possible? The team colors are right there in every teams logo. Common sense should be that if you see a uniform that does not represent what is in the logo, then it is a special uniform and that's that.

Look, I don't like the rampant alternates as much as the next poster but you guys don't need to make up ridiculous excuses to dislike it. You have the TV Broadcast telling you what teams are playing, the team logos to tell you what the team colors are, hell, the front of the jersey should be an obvious indicator as to who the team is.

How is that possible?  The Rockets do have a red logo.  They have been wearing red uniforms with maroon trim a lot.  Also wear black uniforms with red and dark grey trim a lot.  I thought their primary colour scheme was red with silver trim but they do not seem to wear those uniforms much at all.  So, yes, tough to know what the Houston Rockets colour scheme is.

But enough of this, gotta state my opinions...er "make up ridiculous excuses" about other things.

I definitely understand what your saying but using the rockets as an example is not helping. They still have a key red and black in all their uniforms. I say a team like Utah who uses a purple jersey, green jersey, gold jersey, gradient red/orange jersey, and a navy jersey are having a bigger problem. Same with a team like Cleveland who had a maroon, white, black, baby blue, orange/blue, and grey jerseys over the past two years. Their colors are maroon and gold. Making up for 2 of their 6 jerseys using their primary colors. Utah has 3 or their 5 uniforms using their diverse amount of primary colors. I could list more examples. I wonder if some people even know the heat are a red yellow black team and not a black blue and pink team.

Love that my Rockets are using two jerseys for the playoffs (at least in the first round, which shouldn’t last too long). The red “HOUSTON” jerseys are much better than the normal reds. And the black uniforms on the road have become normal. I like that they are staying away from the primary set, but I wish they would have worn the whites at least once!

The Rockets' black uniforms aren't bad, but it's still annoying for there to be YET ANOTHER red and black NBA team.

At this point, just be like soccer matches and have a rectangular spot next to their name on the scorebug to show me who's who.

These playoffs are a mess.

I miss the rockets in white. They're now a red and black team, identity wise. So are so many others. Philly and the Pistons love royal blue but only at home. I feel for the fans attending games the most. Such bland matchups day after day.

Yeah, fans are really suffering at games

I know you're being sarcastic but I'll still respond.

Some arenas literally saw three colors for three months. I don't know about you but it was always about what the opposing team wore that was cool or unique. Now they're appeasing fans who may only attend one game and making mostly all games the same. Real fans who may go to every game or watch every game is being screwed out of unique experiences

What used to be a unique matchup Almost game by game is no more. I don't know about you. But this isn't the NFL where same color at home is the norm for home teams all season long.

Seeing Laker purple on the road is now quite rare. Seeing piston blue in highlights, you knew it was a road game instantly. Historically since lebron won in that ugly black jersey at home, it's been a disaster to gauge home/away context based on photos or quick glances at highlights. It may be cool now. But 10 years from now, we'll be back to home/away/ and two alternates.

I was curious.

Lakers wore purple on the road just 15 of their 41 road contests. This includes their black dominant statement jersey

Edit. They also wore purple about 15 times at home.

I'm with @Wade Heidt. For the casual fan, watching the rockets is a mess

My uncle had season tickets for the Spurs years ago. I would've been pissed to see the Celtics wear white in the alamodome for their one yearly visit. Seeing various colors used to be so cool. Even watching leaguepass years ago, each night was a treat. Current era is the opposite of fulfilling. But maybe I'm just getting old.

Agreed that home teams should wear white always so home fans can see a variety of color matchups. It's also dumb that hockey switched to color at home. I hate it.

Portland looks awesome in those black city jerseys. I prefer their traditional look, but these are really pretty great.

Maybe my TV or cable quality is crap, but black on red (without a number outline) is borderline illegible.  The Portland set yesterday reminds me of the diamondbacks dark grey and maroon set. It just doesn't work. Nike has been in love with no outlines for awhile. It's cool up close and for the refs, but TV viewers have been suffering with Nike choices for years now.

I miss the Rasheed Wallace era of oversized white numbers on their road blacks. I know those jerseys exist but lately in all of the biggest games, these teams are wearing gimmicky jerseys that change the next year.

Here's a thought. If something significant happens in a one off, maybe make it a mainstay product? I don't think I'd be so against some of these combos If there was some valid historical context.

I see DG wrote more-or-less what I was about to write. I really shouldn't like Portland wearing non-traditional uniforms in the playoffs, but, man, that color scheme just works. It's beautiful.

The whole “Rip City” thing is really dumb, but the rest of that set is great.

Feel like color-vs-color is not utilized often enough.  When teams have 4-5 color options, going color-vs-white seems to be lazy planning.

Especially when the road team is in white.

I'll never understand why the Utah Jazz, with a color scheme of blue/green/yellow choose to wear red/orange/yellow for the playoffs.  Hey fans don't forget to wear your Jazz red!

They should change their colors to red/orange/yellow then.  Its ridiculous to consistently use colors that aren't even remotely close to your primary set.  It's BFBS but on steroids.

Agreed. I’d love to see the Utah Jazz City Edition jerseys find a place in the team’s permanent rotation. Maybe replace the gold in all logos to have that red/orange/yellow gradient?

I also feel that the main Navy and White jerseys are the most “meh” of the bunch. The Purple, Orange City gradient, and Green are the best of the bunch, and due to Nike’s NBA uniform system all three are likely going to be mothballed, which is a shame.

Anyways, if I were starting up a team in Utah (especially southern Utah), you better believe that I’d be heavily inclined to prominently feature some variation of this gradient in said team’s identity. I have a shirt in this style and feel that the gradient pattern looks excellent on Black (and likely would also look great on just about any dark field, like Navy, Purple, Indigo, Slate/Dark Gray, or even Dark Green):
