The way FC Dallas is getting treated makes you think how XFL Dallas is even supposed to survive.

Good point. FC Dallas being an afterthought doesn't bode well for a second rate football team in what will always been seen as a WWE football league (no matter what they do to distance themselves from the notion).

I’m not sure that they can ever distance themselves from that notion.

Which is just one of many reasons they're likely doomed to failure. Fake wrestling is expected... fake football not so much. Even a hint of it.

Exactly.  First time around they had NBC Sports to lend McMahon some legitimacy. But now he’s on his own.

Hadn't considered that... but you're probably right. Any legitimacy they gained by toning it down from the purposely outrageous XFL 1.0, they've lost in the fact they have total control of all aspects of the league, and are still owned McMahon. One has to wonder what Vince's obsession with starting a football league is... and why he's not smart enough to realize his involvement hurts his chances.

Hold on, there.  No one ever charged that the XFL games were fake.

The association with the WWE is probably damaging in many circles; but let's be clear as to why.  This association brings with it the idea of cheesiness of presentation (see Jesse Ventura's manner of calling games early in the 2001 season), and also the idea of hype taken to inappropriate extremes (in the form of McMahon's statements); it does not bring a suggestion that the on-the-field competition isn't genuine, in the way that the WWE wresting isn't a genuine sporting competition.

When the league is run by a man whose only experience is in staged, scripted "competitions" that are packaged and sold like sporting events, then yes.  It is totally fair to wonder a little bit about the legitimacy of his new venture.

To be fair, the WWE is a long way from the Attitude Era in which the XFL was launched.   Heck, their global sponsorship revenue has increased by four since 2010 alone.  Sure, Vince is again using K&L Gates to be his legal team as he did before and has for the WWE, But businessmen can learn from their previous errors and the gimmicks from the previous attempt doesn't look to return.  Plus, there are still some states in which they hold shows have their entertainers regulated by state athletic commissions.

His global sponsorship revenues don't have anything to do with it.   And this isn't about hype or gimmicks.

He scripts his shows and sells it as faux-competition. It's a soap opera in spandex, every bit as pre-planned.  They dress it up with a pretence of competition, but the outcome is established beforehand to suit the story.

It is totally legitimate to wonder how and if he will influence the storylines in his "competition".  Especially if ratings aren't where he wants them to be. Last time around, we could be sure that NBC would have no interest in such a thing.  But now?  With the league entirely under his control?  That remains to be seen.

And those same questions were raised in the lead up to, and in season during, the XFL 1.0.

FC Dallas gets very little and if they do it's game highlights and that's it.  It's the Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers, Stars, College Sports, High School sports, individuals from the area either in the big 4 or even other sports (ie golfer Jordan Speith) and then FC Dallas.  The Dallas Wings of the WNBA get no coverage and an example of this was when they hired their new coach.  The local news did not mention the hiring of a new coach for the Wings.  All they mentioned that day were Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks and Stars.

Truth be told, FC Dallas (like most MLS franchises) have received much more coverage since the 2014 World Cup than they ever did before.  Heck, in FCD's case, that World Cup got them talked about weekly on the most listened to sports station in the market, hosted by a former Burn/FCD executive.  It's still going after four years.  They had a midday host on the same station work their TV broadcast for two seasons until spring 2018 when he decided not to work games and write Cowboys for The Athletic as his side hustle.  He would host a segment on the team weekly.   If they actually won one MLS Cup, their interest would increase from local media.  Look at how long it took TCU to basically be recognized by media located in Dallas County; h#ll it basically took the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, followed by the 2010 Rose Bowl and the subsequent Big 12 invite for that side of the area to care.

No; to wonder whether the games themselves will consist of managed storylines is not legitimate in the least.

First, we should remember the simple fact that the league's games will be played by football players and football coaches, not by professional wrestlers who are trained in enacting that embarassing "kayfabe" nonsense. On top of that, if we assume that betting will be allowed on the games, then the managing of the competition would break federal laws.

The WWE may be a purveyor of tasteless garbage entertainment; but it is not run by stupid people.  And to try to present a scripted competition as a real sports league would be stupid beyond belief; it would be tantamount to calling up the FBI and saying "please arrest me".

First was because the NFL was seen as the No Fun League, now he's just so darn mad at kneeling during the anthem🙄

You're half correct.

Legitimate football players will not "act" and "perform" to a script.  You can't script a football game.  There would be too many injuries and the ball doesn't always "bounce" the way you want it to.  It's not like the Harlem Globetrotters, which is relatively easy to plan.

HOWEVER - they can build up storylines either legitimately or manufactured (two players feuding with each other, a revenge game, a star player dealing with a trying personal situation, etc.) and then "rig" the game so that calls go the way of the team they need to win.  I firmly believe that this happens in the NFL, either at the behest of the league itself or the networks or the gambling sponsors.

He doesn’t have to rig the competition like a wrestling match. I’m just wondering when he will start to finesse the storylines. When he’ll ask players to feud and when he’ll ask them to make up in the face of a greater foe. When he’ll want to unveil personal problems or heighten the off-field drama for ratings. That is, after all, what he does.

When a television producer claims his “reality show” is totally spontaneous, you look at the claim sideways.  When a guy whose entire life has been built around a fake scripted sport tells you that he wants to run a totally legit league, that same skepticism is warranted.

How much of a goddamned mark would you have to be to wonder if the XFL games are/were staged?

The kind of mark they play to.  :P

I never said that the games were staged, though.  I wondered if he would be tempted to create certain storylines for his league if attention was waning.  Which is certainly plausible, considering that it's his stock in trade.

So the games wouldn't be fake, but the drama would be. Something tells me a lot of people would see right through that.

McMahon tried that in XFL1.0 and none of the football people wanted any part of it. Go watch Jesse Ventura try to lure the New York coach into an altercation, it’s just as embarrassing as Bubba the Cameraman in the cheerleader locker room.
